My new multi tool

I thought all you tool junkies would like to see my new self altered tool.I can not take credit, There is a guy who sell's them for $100, but i figured since i all ready had the wrench i could do it myself. I have a friend who has a nice cnc plasma table [ it will cut 3/4 like butter ] and he let come play on it for a bit. If i were to do it again [ and i will for the smaller spud wrench i have ] I will change the angle of the striking side a few degrees and i think it will be perfect. It will be a valuable multi tool for when we are racing in the desert. Enjoy.

I have a 15" spud wrench that's 30 yrs. old or so that would make a very nice sized "Tail Wrench" for my 4x4 tool box.

Time for some new glasses, Those welds are right up to the beveled edge of the solid stock and to the irregular edge of the wrench. You can see the bevel on the solid stock in the hole in the center. But please show us pics of your tig welds in such an application and enlighten me as to proper welds when it comes to solid stock to a forged piece that has irregular thickness. i hope you don't come back with pics of stick welds on 2 butting plates. If your that good teach me something. Severely undercut, give me a break.

It's a hammer section i welded to the wrench for banging on things, driving bolts or smashing your finger. It is a tool that will be kept in our off road race truck, the spud part is good for lining up things like control arms, you get the idea. Don't tell me you have never pounded on something with your crescent wrench or channellock's. If you held it in your hand , you would get it. Its a 3 in 1 tool. I may try a pair of channellock 440's next and all so add a section of a 1/2 ratchet to a 15" pair of crescent's. I can never leave any thing alone, it's a flaw of being OCD that works out sometimes.

Those welds are definitely not severly undercut. From the pic it looks like they might be slightly undercut but not enough to cause any problem but then again without other angles of the pic it is hard to tell if they are undercut at all.

It opens bottles of good beer, however if you drink that twist cap ****, or out of a can its completely unnecessary.

It serves a purpose, and not to open beer bottles. It is to keep the tools needed in a race truck to the minimum for weight and space, thus eliminating the need for a hammer and a large drift pin. It is a multi tool that is not for everyone, yet it will work for us in our application. I am not trying to sell them but i am adapting what i have, to work for my needs. Even if it didn't work, what am out? 1 hour of my time. No big deal, i will just move on to the next thing. Necessity is the mother of invention, and i have at lest 3 more in my head as of now. If i only had more time everyday. Besides it's great for flattening out your finger if nothing else, and it sure looks cool. Maybe i should spend more time honing my welding skills first.

I was just being a smart ***.

I completely get it, its a great mod. Realigning suspension links in a garage can be a pain at times, not to mention on the side of a trail/course. You gain a whole new function (hammer) by adding only a few oz of weight to the tool bag.

That being said, Im sure it would make a great bottle opener too.

I think people just didn't really know what it was used for. Lighten up, lady.

I could think of a few times on the trails that would be nice to have. It would save precious space in my trail box too...

I have taken into consideration all the remarks regarding this tool, i have showed it to my friends and to other people in the construction world and have come up with a idea and want to see what the elite garagejournal tool junkies think. My idea is to basically cut the head off of a 20 oz finish hammer, mill a rabbit down the center of it so as to let it accept the 1/2 plate all ready welded on the wrench, slide it on and weld it in place. This will give it a bigger striking surface that is more designated. My question is this, is it possible to disassemble the crescent wrench so i could anneal or heat treat the entire thing as one unit. I am concerned with the heat from tig welding a forged piece to a 4130 piece to a hammer head that is made of tool steel. Should i even be concerned with this, or should i just do it and put it threw it's paces and see how it holds up. This would be a great iron worker tool.

I love it, looks awesome. I have 2 of those same spud wrenches and mig welder. I might have to make something similar. But I guarantee my welds won't look good like yours. Mine will look more like poop.

We use to make wrenches/hammers for milling machines by cutting the open end off of a combination wrench and silver soldering on a hunk of round brass to act as a hammer. Would this work on your spud wrench? IMHO your TIG welds look good.

No i feel it has to be hard welded to hold up to the abuse that it will be subjected to.

I like it. I can see what you're getting at with weight saving, it's got me thinking now. I drive classic cars and usually have a couple of tools with me just in case, something like this would be just the thing.
