My new shop

I started this project back on Dec. 6th. I contracted out the complete outside. Me and my dad were to finish the inside, insulation, wiring, walls and painting. All is done except one more coat of paint on the interior walls. I am posting from my blackberry so pics are tough to attach but here is one of the outside.

Oh and it is a 20x20 in size with a decent sized floored attic and 9' ceilings inside the shop area.

Can't access my photobucket account from this PC but I can attach a few the old fashion way. I still have a way's to go. I need to seal the concrete floor, open for suggestions here on that. I need to mount my No-Mar tire changer, attach all the switch and receptacle covers after I finish the painting. I set this arrangement up for motorcycle storage and maintenance. I will be adding a motorcycle lift. I have it wired with plenty of 20 amp circuits, one 30 amp circuit which powers my Toy Hauler that sits on the driveway right across from the walk door. I mounted a 30 amp RV weather proof plug box on the back of the building for that. I have (8) 48" 2 tube T8 light fixtures (4) to a circuit. I have a dedicated 20 amp receptacle at the window for possibly a AC unit, gets shot in the summer down here in Mississippi. I have it insulated with R13 in all the walls and R19 in the attic. I could not go any thicker on the insualtion in the attic due to the ceiling joist being 2x6's and I wanted to floor at least half of that from the center main beam. Get's cold here but not for days on out. The roll up door is 9x7 and light as a feather so I did not do a lift motor on that. Outside is all but done except there is a drainage issue on the north side that the builder is aware of and coming back to solve once we get in a dry weather pattern. The inside walls are 7/16" OSB primed with Kilz oil base and finished out with 2 coats of latex flat white paint. The ceiling is the same as the walls. I like it white and bright. I have old eyes and one of my motorcycles is all black. I will be adding 1x4 treated base boards soon as the wall work is done. Oh and I have it pre wired for cable TV or Satelite, take your pic I have both going into the main house as of right now. 32" flat screen will adorn that short wall between the 9x7 door and 36" walk door. I can't miss any racing or ballgames when out there. Notice the high up receptacle on the short wall.

Anyway I attached a few random shots not in any order but the more finished looking ones were taken thsi past saturday. I will post up some more as I get along with it and move in.

About that concrete floor any suggestions on what I need to do there? I want it to be oil resistant and not slick when wet. Not worried about a color.

That is not a problem. the lay of the lot slopes toward the building as it does my house. There is a slope away from building that does not show on camera. The dark colored hay is a damp spot that is due to the swale not being cut deep enough at the time because the ground was frozen and thawing at the time he was trying to cut the swale. He did the best he could and said he would return at drier weather. My yard was heavily rutted during constructon. We have had 3 or 4 torential down pours since then and no water around or near the building. I work for a large civil engineering company and trust me I was on top of the grading and even supervised the laser usage. Water not a problem. There were 4 loads of good foundation dirt hauled in to fill the hole there. The back of building slopes off on a 4:1 slope. I am on the low side of the street meaning I have no drainage ditch in front of my home. The lot slopes toward the home but is vee'd back to a swale around the house. The pictures are deceiving due to me standing up hill on the driveway. The driveway slopes away from the pad connecting the new shop. The connector slab actually slopes back down to the main driveway. It is an optical illusion from standing inside the shop looking out. I know what we saw on the laser level and it's correctly placed. Only water in has been along the bottom of the 9x7 door in a heavy downpour with wind blowing right at the door which faces NE.

The building is actually several inches above grade. Standard building pracitce applied here to local conditions. My house and every other home in this area is built the same way. I did not do a riser on the slab then the wall as it simply is not needed for this application. The foundation is over built with a lot of #4 and $5 rebar with Welded wire mesh 6x6 used. Footing are over 18" deep and 1' wide with a grade been in the middle. It is not going anywhere soon. Not one crack in two months time. Not even a hair line crack.

I forgot to add that the siding used is Hardie board cement wood grain look siding. Pricey stuff at $11.97 a board. Paints nice and supposedly never rotts. The one floodlight on the front corner is a motion and the one on the far rear is switch only.

1st pic of the inside. Decided to wait until spring to epoxy the floor. I have begun to move things in. I almost have the tools organized. Moved a work table in last night, not without incident. More on that in the general discussion section. I am still shopping for a motorcycle lift. I plan on floor mounting my No Mar tire changer this coming weekend. I am pleased so far with the finished product. I have a YAMAHA Super Tenere on order with a May 2011 delivery date. I plan on parking it back toward the roll up door. It will be my everyday street ride.

Plenty of room for my Kendon dual rail trailer, lawn mower and Zuma scooter. Filling up fast!

Thanks a lot guys! it has been a long time coming. I have been cramped in a 2 car garage with a tiny storage room for over 16 years. If the economy had not tanked and the real estate market went with it I most likely would have a new home with a much bigger shop by now. Unfortunately it might take 3 years at today's market to sell my existing home so I went ahead and built with what I almost own. Now if the market picks up in the next 6 years I will most likely be back here posting pics from the new home and shop.

I located where I will mount the tire changer tonight and installed a new gadget on the changer. I also took some measurements for my 32" HDTV razor thin LED/LCD that is going on the wall this saturday complete with full cable. Motorcycle racing and football that's my life and I can't miss any of it.

What do you have in there for lights? Seems very bright with the white walls.

I have (8) T8 48" 2 tube fixtures. Cheap ones from Home Depot. 3 were broken out of the box and had to be returned. After that they seem to be fine. Plenty of light for old tired eyes and black motorcycles.

This is the only pic I have of the upstairs in the attic. Not much really. I don't plan on much going up there except light stuff. A strip of 4x8 sheets down each side of the center beam. I also have a regular 60w curly cue CFL up there for light.

Here is a pic of the rafters and ceiling joist as the building was under construction. No pre-fab anything it was all built on site. Both 2' on centers using 2x6's supported by a huge center beam.

I added a work bench tuesday only we lost the stainless steel top in transport. Apparently it blew off along the way. Shopping for a replacement has not been easy or cheap so far. Here is a pic of the bench area. I also added an old stand up wood cabinet in the corner of the building up from the tool boxes. I am adding some shelving on the opposite wall eventually.

This is where my No Mar tire changer will be mounted this afternoon. Could not mount it dead center of wall due to attic stairs dropping down. My 32" HDTV will be mounted up on this wall. I put a receptacle up high when wiring the shop.

Reviving this old thread with some updated pics of my hang out.

It is almost complete I am still shopping for a bike lift. Shipping to me is a problem but I am about to pull the trigger within the week. The floor is still only concrete. I may be too lazy to finish the epoxy treatment I had hoped for all along. moving all the stuff out will be a pain in the ****.

So far I am enjoying the extra space and nice clean organized work are.

The HDTV has full comcast cable with all the sports channels, race channels, video on demand and even HBO I still need a fridge in the place as the walk to the main garage is getting longer and longer

And I am still waiting on my stainless steel work bench top. I couldn't complain too much since the place was all but giving it too me. Only I have to wait until they have that exact size scrap piece from a job. The original one took flight on the move to the shop.

Got my new Handy bike lift last week. It is a S.A.M. 1000. Had a issue with the floor pedal and a waiting a replacement. Love it except for the defective pedal.
