my new toy...otc press

Got this the other day from an auto parts store that was closing down. The guy was the original owner and bought it in 1975. Came with a bunch of different adapters, too. My engine hoist made short order of the installation.

The crank to raise and lower the base is missing, so I'm going to try to figure out if I can replace it or make something. It is quite heavy to lift it by yourself so it would be nice if I could get it to work. The gauge is also busted - I will have to find one of those as well.

I'm going to sell my other press (air over hydraulic, 20T) if anyone is interested. Essentially brand new.

OTC definitely makes nice stuff. I'm gonna enjoy using this in the future.

What I would consider crazy cheap for a $2k+ press (new). You don't want to know.

It might, but it will have to be long to get some torque out of it. The shaft is threaded, but the threads are big, not like a typical pitch. Not sure how the original went on exactly. I checked OTC site and they only list the entire crank assembly. I will have to call them and see if I can just get the handle. Got to find a good OTC dealer that will work with me on some parts, too.

Simple Green works surprisingly well on grease and it won't hurt anything. You could probably drink it if you had too.

Simple Green will a do a good job cleaning it up. People probably by now think I own stock in the company because I recommend all the time, but it works good and it biodegradable. If you want non green friendly clearer there is nothing better than Trichloroethelene, the only drawback is prolonged exposure can cause memory loss, central nervous system problems, and cancer.

I don't care how much you paid for the press, A You **** is well deserved, that thing is better than the one in our shop.

No sweat. I was just going to recommend Greg Smith if you were near one of the stores. For $50 more than the Northern one, it might be worth it, but probably not with shipping.

A Quebec company make a cleaner called Hertel Plus (http://www.hertel.ca/vw/fs/p027.htm). It's great at ripping through grease and grime. It's the best household cleaner I've ever used by a country mile. Biodegradable too.

Failing that, I'm sure any caustic soda cleaner would work fine - try your BBQ cleaner on it. There are biodegradable versions of BBQ cleaner that work very well too. Just do it outside.

Gasoline spooks many guys for a use like this because of the fact that it is so highly flammable. I do not use it nearly to the extent that I did years ago for parts cleaning, but even today if I have something really stubborn and a real mess I will still choose to use gasoline over most anything else.

It doesn't eat the paint on my BBQ. I'd test it on a small area first though.

You could wear a mask - I was thinking of the fumes being harmful, hence take it out.

I guess I could put a nut on there if I could find one with such a large thread/pitch.

I have the parts page but it doesn't list a part number for the handle - only the whole winch - at OTC's typical outrageous prices.

What about replacing both the handle and the bolt/shaft with a newer one to match. You could just replace both since you still have your other press right?

No, the other press (now sold) didn't have a winch.

I thought about getting those parts, but I'd be taking a chance. Fulton (or whatever they're called now) wasn't much help in letting me know whether or not this was feasible. The winch I have is so old, they couldn't do anything but tell me what it's current replacement model was.

All you fabrication guys out there...is it possible to tap a piece of metal with such a thread pitch? If so, maybe I could make my own handle. That's all I really need. Heck, as long as I don't need to remove the handle I could probably just weld it onto the shaft.

You could check with a bolt supply house to see if they have a nut that size and pitch and weld it to a piece of sleel shaped to a handel

Don't do it. Water based cleaners need to be thoroughly rinsed off by water based water, or they can be extremely corrosive. You can remove black oxide with Simple Green - I found that out the hard way.

WD-40 is your friend.
