I displayed the progress on my garage build a couple of weeks ago and a few asked about the workbench I was building. I finished it this weekend, and here are a few pics of it. It is 2" thick, made of laminated Walnut, Cherry, Maple, Oak, Quarter-Sawn Oak, Orangewood, Mahogany- with a 2x2 1/2" maple frame. The legs are solid 3x3 walnut with Maple cross-members, all mortise and tenon, with a pine sub-frame, bolted and dowled from the underside. It is 6 1/2' long, 28" deep, it weighs a few pounds, but could stand a pretty good punishment and won't drift on the floor. Here are a few pics, I made it all from scrap odd-lengths of wood that was gathering too much space in my scrap bin and scrap that was in a neighbor's client's shop- they will all have a productive life now. Enjoy!

That bench is beautiful. Your great grandson will enjoy it a hundred years from now.

Wow! That is a great bench! As beautiful as it is now, imagine how nice it will look once it has some project related wear on it. You have definitely created an heirloom bench. Maybe you could brand your initials and a date on it somewhere so your great grandchildren can show it off to their friends in their shop/garage.

Can you make me one for my dining room??

That is exactly what I was thinking myself. It is nice enough to be in the house.

Great idea on the initials/heirloom, something to remember who made it and possibly the story behind the scenes. Great use of the scrap pile. Excellent work.

I finished it with 2 coats of thinned out varnish. I don't want a shiny finish or any finish at all, but don't want the wood to be able to absorb stains. I worked on a hardwood top for years and every few years, I'd sand the top clean. Believe me, this top will get used, I will hold back nothing as it is there to be used. It actually feels good to get that wood used up, as it was sitting for years and I'd rather have to go buy more wood for another project than have scrap piles of stuff I have no idea about- they become a hobby in themselves just remembering what's in them to use again.
