Been going to more garage sales lately, this weekend I got a 21” LCD TV, vintage Craftsman belt sander, small torpedo level and set of drill bits and two small metal drawer units for….$35.

IMG_2057.PNG

When I made that cabinet on the new wall I posted above, I designed it for an 18” lcd tv. So unfortunately, this doesn’t fit. I had a cabinet that really wasn’t being used. So, I made a shallow box and spray painted it black. Drilled a 2” hole in the back for the cords to pass through, and then mounted the tv to the box. The box has two feet on the back so it stands upright. Now I just need to route our cable to it…

So I've been banging on things a little more and decided I wanted some sort of anvil stand/hammering station. The benches have some bounce/resonance when I bang on them.

Found this railroad tie on the side of an old railroad track that's currently out of commission. Got it home and took my Harbor Freight handheld electric planer to it. Amazed at the results.

Mounted a board to the bottom, put a coat of spray Varathane on it to seal the wood (and hopefully the smell). And sprayed the bottom black.

Railroad anvil in the works too:

Love the feel of this garage! Looks to be similar to what I'm going for in my garage. A budget that doesn't break the bank, cool vintage pieces restored for active service, and a colour scheme to tie it all together. You've also convinced me to get another bench grinder and stuff a couple buffing wheels on it so I can polish up my vintage cast power tools.

You do a really nice job on the pieces you restore, keep up the great work!

Some more progress being made:

Built a better wood storage system that accomodates different board lengths--got the idea from my local Home Depot:

GREAT Drawer cabinets, I would love to find some

So, I was browsing on Craigslist yesterday and came across an ad for this:

photo%2520%25282%2529.JPG

The perfect thing to hold all of my screws/bolts/etc. So I called her and she said she still had it and had some other cabinets like it too. She was cleaning out her dad's garage.

So I drove over there. She had two other cabinet units that had these small drawers. I asked her how much she wanted for all three, and she said, well, you know I think they're worth $40.

Done.

Got them home and into the garage ----- am going to build a workbench over them I think ---- the small unit might just sit on top and under the cabinets:

Small bin has built in dividers ---- the grey one has removal dividers:

Thanks for the kind words ------

Got some more work done on the one wall ----- turned a little wood filing cabinet into a stand for the chopsaw.

See the before and after below:

Got this Kreg 48" T track last Christmas and never got around to putting it to use. Removed the backing from the Ryobi saw and cut it in half. Remounted the left side ---- and then bolted the wood down onto the table.

Can you post a photo close up of the wall mounted bike rack? What brand is it? Are you happy with it? Pros/cons? Thanks

The bike rack is this:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0009I572E/?tag=atomicindus08-20

mounted on a nice piece of stained oak that I had laying around.

The downside is that the tires leave black marks on the wall. Will probably figure something out for that ----- like a sheet of 1/8" plywood stained and poly'ed. Or just thin wood strips wider than the tires.

I just found this thread and have to say that I really like your style man, I feel that I have a similar taste. I like to have my benches stained and Hammered Tone paint is my favorite about all I use lately. Good work on all the tool restorations and also innovative ideas like the buffer/grinder set up! I like your family memorial area, I did a similar thing over my workbench. Keep up the posts and good work!

Spent the last few nights restoring an axe my dad gave me. And by gave, I mean I told him I was digging a french drain and was hitting major roots and he said here use this. And I kept it. When I decided I wanted to restore it, I couldnt find it. Not in the garage and not in the shed. A day later found it laying in the dirt amongst the weeds where I last used it.

One of the purposes of making an axe really pretty is that you take care of it better and dont leave it laying in the bushes like I had.

Sanded down the handle, then soaked the whole thing in oxalic acid (wood bleach) removed the stains on the handle and the rust off the head.

Used the same stain treatment I did on my workbenches: a few coats of antique walnut then 2 layers of red mahoghany. I've found the antique walnut stain seals up the wood pretty well. When I used red mahoghany on its own the wood looked almost purple ----- or like when punk girls with brown hair dye their hair red.

Painted on the three stripes of red white and blue. Then spar varnished the handle with 4 coats. Still need to sharpen it.

Hopefully, most people aren't like my wife: I like how you painted the french flag on the handle

Me: That's the American flag.

Her: Oh, well it looks nice.

Once again, diggin the projects that are coming out of this shop. Lots of great reclaiming going on. I'm also in the process of restoring/re-hanging an old Axe, kind of like the sketch below. Found the head at my parents farm and am carving a handle out of Sugar Maple.

Looks like you've seen Best Made Co. Axes in New York. Great looking axe you fixed up there.

Hey and thanks! Yes those Best Made axes are very cool but even if I won the lottery tomorrow, I couldnt swallow spending $350 for a dang axe. Even if it does come in a wooden crate.

The Lincoln was my inspiration:

Made some more progress on the Craftsman saw/jointer combo. Too bad no one makes a spray paint in this vintage Cman blue color. I used a hammered charcoal gray.

Shop is looking great! Nice to see another garage here in Sacramento that has come together so well. Moved into our house a year ago and still sorting through all our junk. Have been making some good progress lately, and seeing this has really inspired me to keep going!

Thanks to all of the replies in the tool forum, got the table saw / jointer working.

Still not sure if the crooked switch I installed bothers me enough to fix it.

Sawdust will fall mostly in the wooden tray under the table saw. I raised the jointer so that the island acts as an out feed table.

I've been there. I cleaned up the garage a lot by making some tough decisions and getting rid of a bunch of stuff. And finding room in the house, shed, attic for stuff that really didn't belong in the garage.

Re: Circa 1951: my NorCal garage

Got my upper doors (thanks 12 gauge garage for the idea) cut and installed last night. Btw There's very little difference between thin MDF sheets and cardboard.

Still need to paint them of course. But want to get all of the construction done and then come through with the paint in one night.

Mess above the cabinets is Outta sight, outta mind.

I really really like this thread, it continues to be one of my favourites. I hear ya on having to find other places for things and even get rid of stuff, I've had to do that in my shop and will have to again soon. The projects you do look great, and I really dig your first-aid/extinguisher/axe station!

I'm envious of your old jointer there, that should be a lot of fun. do you have a special spot in mind for that old fan tucked into the corner of the workbench? I have one just like it from the 40's that I use to blow across my woodstove and spread the heat a bit.

Just finished reading this thread. Had to subscribe. It's good to see so many from the Sac area on the board. Great projects and input from all. I am also in the Sac area.

Nice garage neighbor and thanks for the lead on that Kubb game. I had never heard of it but it looks pretty fun and a fairly easy project to work on for Spring.

Re: Circa 1951: my NorCal garage

Garage is a mess so no updates there. We recently got an old pop up trailer.

And an old really light fiberglass canoe. Vega brand also known as Moore. 18' 6" long and weighs 60 pounds. Which is lighter than Mad Rivers current 18'6 boat that sells for. $2700. Got it for $100. Some chunky patches that I will sand down and make smooth then out on a new coat of red paint --- possibly the only viable canoe color.

Great looking garage! And nice finds on some of the vintage items. I've been browsing craigslist for metal cabinets/parts storage and a drafting chair like that and they're few and far between or simply very expensive.

Re: Circa 1951: my NorCal garage

Been working on our old metal shed over the last few weeks. Cut the door opening to raise it 14" or so. So I don't have to duck.

This shed has been on my todo list since we bought the house three years ago.

Just built the door last night. Window came from an oak entertainment center my parents were tossing out about two years ago. I broke it down and used the wood on various projects.
