Very cool. I picked up one when I was with the Fire Department in the small town I lived in. It's not nearly as old as your's is. I have it in my garage. They are way cool.

Re: my OLD fire hydrent

Here's my Ludlow fire hydrant that was removed from service in Huntington, WV many years ago. It had so many coats of paint on it that none of the lettering was visible and the fluted sections were totally filled with paint! I'm guessing 40+ coats of thick enamel paint that I chemically stripped prior to refinishing it and installing new "pear" rings, chains and stainless acorn nuts. It now resides in The Hot Rod Grille Garage next to a 1940's cast iron mailbox that I rescued from a scrap metal recycler and restored several years ago.

Boy, what can't you share on GJ?

Here is one of my retirement gifts from the guys at work. (39 years in Public Works Engineering/Construction Management) One of my Project Coordinators and I were walking a project and determined this hydrant would have to be relocated. I explained to him that this is one of the older hydrants left in the city and how it had been here since the street was first built and generally just made a bid thing of how neat it was. About a year later when I retired all my guys showed up at the house one day with this. They had gotten it from the Public Utilities Dept after it had been replaced with a new one, had it stripped and powder coated for me. Man I miss those guys.

It is a 1923 RD Woods/Matthews Pat. 2-tier

And here also is my best friend Chesty...Chesty Puller. Sadly we had to have him put to sleep last weekend, he was 14 years old and had kidney and liver failure. I miss him also...very much.

I have an old 60's unit out in the garden. It was just sitting on a curb with a "free" sign on it. How could I resist?

I found the picture I was looking for the other day. This is the 2 barrel hydrant that I stripped and repainted at the fire house. It was being put in the city auction, so the chief went down and grabbed it before the auction knowing I wanted to re-do one for the station.

I forget what the date is, I'd have to look at it. It sits on a 3/4 or 1" steel plate as a base. It's also full of concrete to keep it from walking off or easily tipping over. So it'll make it hard to pull out and look at the back.
