Thank you, it's cramped and messy, but I get alot of work done in there.

I forget, but one of my mentors when I was studying mathematical physics in college had a sign on his desk that said something like "A cluttered desk is the sign of a genius." I loved it, lol. For me, there's nothing wrong with a "pretty" garage. But my stuff always has that 'organized mess' look to it, and I do use it frequently. For me, that's the most important part. Nothing wrong with having a showroom garage, however, for me, functionality takes precedence over showy looks. I do strive for both as best as can, though

Na, there is a bunch of stuff not even pictured! LOL. Plus I have added a bunch of stuff since I took those pics. The awol stuff includes my little milling machine, the three metal shapers, the engine stand, the wood lathes, the wood jointer, the wood planer, three buried air compressors, one drill press, the bead blast cabinet, the metal lathe in the basement, three jigsaws, two tablesaws, none of the mics, dial calipers etc were pictured, there are additional tools in the wall cabinets, 3 long frame Walker jacks, a couple of chain hoists, a power hacksaw, the transmission jack, several bench vises, the Rigid pipe threading set, the radial arm saw at pops place and a few other odds and ends. Na, the only thing ol brownbagg showed that I cannot match is the vehicle lift and the press, but that press wouldn't take much to match. See, I didn't toss pics up of everything. :lol_hitti

Hey Brownbagg, I've got old signs all over the place. An old Dr. Pepper machine with beer in it (two racks in it have rootbeer and cream soda for the kids). Even an old gas pump outside between the doors. And I still work in it nearly everyday. It looks alot like yours inside. Minus the Jap truck. Each to his own. I put things I like in my shop. I dig looking at all the fancy pants garages on this site. I wish I had some of the things they do. But I would never be that clean and organized. I'll bet some don't do anything in them but clean. But that's OK. It's theirs.

I don't really see it as one or the other. I do all sorts of work in my 'pretty boy garage'...

It looks like this right now with my Vette project underway:

But it cleans up nice too:

I really love that it can be whatever I need it to be for a particular purpose. Plus, it's an attached garage and I wouldn't want it to be dirty as hell due to tracking stuff into the house. I am planning to move my blast cabinet, welders and parts cleaner out to my yard shed along with a homemade powder coat oven and booth. That way I can have a small 'dirty shop' and not get so much **** in the garage.

^ That's a nice looking garage. Looks like a normal room inside the house turned into a garage. And great taste in project cars

I like that Buck, looks practical.

They look good to me! It's obvious you've been "getting 'er done" in there for quite a while.

That helps a bit, I was gettin worried that it might be too showy. I could not get confirmed that I had a workin space, and not a pretty boy shop from the original poster! I figured I better pull my christmas lights down and throw my bald stuffed phesant out, then perhaps he would authorize me! :lol_hitti

It takes a lot of oil dry on the floor to counteract those christmas lights...

I love this place! I love both worlds, love functional shops and love shops that can do it all equally as well.

this is my opinion and only my opinion

I actual use my garage, its not a pretty garage, its a working garage. I dont have drywall, I have 1/2 inch plywood, because it strong, I hang stuff on 16 penny nail. I beat stuff on the floor. its not epoxy, I cut steel with the torch on floor. I dont drop cloth when I paint. I dont have a coke machine or stupid gas pump taking of space. Its welders, air compressor, chain hoist, engine puller taking up space. metal lathe, table saw. band saw, drill press. tool box, tool box and more tool box. There four engine torn about, grease oil. The car lift is outside because not enough room. and it 36x30. four vehicle torn down to frames.

Its a freaking shop not a show room for a exotic car lot

thats where I,m coming from.

So I take it you don't like gas pumps or just can't afford to buy one. This is like the second or third response I've seen where you slam gas pumps. Now it's coke machines. I've seen garages so damn dirty, greasy and jam packed full that you couldn't get around hardly, and yet in the corner there was room for a pop machine with pop that was ice cold. So I guess that makes it a non working garage? Heck, I've had grease and oil all over my garage floor, but I like to take a few minutes and clean it up so I'm not tracking it everywhere else. Maybe instead of tearing 4 rides down to the frame, start putting one or two back together so you'd have room for that pop machine or gasd pump you know you so desperately want. :lol_hitti But this is my opinion and only my opinion. BW....I want a pop machine for the garage. Then I can stock it with assorted beer and charge the moochers. :bounce:

I have never been known as one of the spit shine and polish boys here, but the idea of a little room for a smaller soda pop machine in the corner of my shop appeals to me too!

Uncle Buck;538446 What's the primary function of the baseball bats all duct-taped together? (lower right hand corner) Hitting for power?[/QUOTE said:
LOL :lol_hitti Those are my old bats I had as a kid, they were at my pops place and he taped them together when I picked up a load of stuff and that I was hauling to my place. I just pulled them out of the trunk and set them where you see them. That is so typical of my dad, he does stuff like that all the time, it is just part of his charm! :lol_hitti

I'll take the working shop over any showcase, and my beer will be Budweiser from a can...

Buttwiper? From a can? No wonder you're in a such a sour mood. I prefer American beers out of a bottle hyself.

Funny, Jay's post did not strike me as sour, however, there is no denying that your post is sour my friend.

People can work hard in a "pretty" shop too. I've never seen a NASCAR team shop that had a bare concrete floor and yet they build those cars from the chassis on up. Heck - if you wanted to you could probably eat of the floors in most of those places, yet I'd argue there is a lot of work going on each and every day.

I knew a mechanic once that had a shop that was just about that clean and organized. If you saw an oil spot on his floor you can bet he would be on his way to get the floor-dri container and broom to clean it up. It didn't seem to impact how much he got done and he treated the customer's cars just as well as he treated his shop... you never had to worry about him tracking in dirt or grease into your nice leather seats or carpeting.

I guess some guys like to be organized and have everything in it's place as well as having the place look good at the same time. Some guys don't care about the grime and toss tools around or have a bench covered in metal shavings, oil spills, and various sockets. I guess as long as it works for them why should anyone else care.

An ugly woman can be just as good of a wife as a pretty one, but which would you rather marry all other things being equal? I'm the first to argue that form should follow function, but for some guys a clean shop just functions that much better. If it is a place you will be spending time, it sure would be a lot more enjoyable if you actually liked the surroundings.

To each his or her own I guess.

is that a p-51??

I've been to a lot of different shops... My Dad's friend had the classic "messy shop". There was piles of stuff all over... interesting stuff as well as tons of junk. It was entertaining as a kid to visit and look around. However, there was so much stuff that a lot of equipment ended up sitting out side. And you ended up tripping over things if you weren't careful...

It takes a lot of dedication to keep things clean... Overall, I think you can work more efficiently.

Perhaps some of these guys on here with the super nice garages don't do a huge amount of work--that's their deal. I can bet tho, when it is time to puck the car or project into a bay, that they can work much more efficiently. no wasted time hunting for the socket that rolled under the half finished project that you didn't feel like picking up... now it's missing from the tool box....

kudos to those guys that have the dedication to clean up after each job or the end of the day--that's regardless of whether you have a super nice shop or a "working garage".

I read through the first two pages and then skipped to the end as I wanted to add my post. I say to each his own as to how we want our shops. This kind of reminds me of things in the military, when the old heads say " I don't know how these youngsters do it, back in my day it was hard. Now it's easy" Bottom line is people are different and care about certain things more than others. I personally don't care what anyone thinks of my garage. It works for me. If I had all the money in the world I would have some cool do-dads on my walls.
I am in a rental house in Vegas with a 3 car garage so my shop side is roughly 1 1/4 of the garage. Houses here have no attic storage so everything is put onto ceiling rack storage. And that along with my ever growing bunch of bikes, scooters, wagons for my kids it seems my space is shrinking. In my little space I have my toolbench 6' X 3', compressor, small Cman toolbox, table saw, compound miter saw, full size drill press, Chop saw on a stand, Lincoln Electric Welder, Grinder on a stand and a 2006 Dyna Wide Glide. I wish I had more space but it works most of the time. I just can't have too many projects going at once. I currently am working on the running boards for my Dad's 40 Ford P/U and bulding a 1930 VL Harley Flathead motor.
