Hey guys,

Been on the forum fo a while looking for ideas, but this will be my first post and build thread. This is my second shop, so I feel pretty good about the design decisions I have made. I know all of you will say it needs to be bigger, but money IS an object. I will have a separate 3 car garage for daily drivers and tools unrelated to working on cars, so this space is all mine! Sooo, here is the plan:

It will have two bays incuding a large two car with a large 30x16 bay with a 2 post lift and bathroom. The second bay is a small 20x12 bay that will be used primarily as a metal fab area, but all large tools will be on casters (to a reasonable extent). For a couple days a year, the small bay will be my paint booth.

Foundation is down, looking from back of shop toward the front. Other foundation in background is the house.

More to come....

Welcome to GJ LSUfj. Looks like a great project. Bigger is better but you'll have plenty of space especially without daily drivers cluttering up the place. Keep the pics coming. This looks like a good one.

Here is the plan. It doesn't show the bathroom or interior walls since I will be doing those myself.

Also, is there forum rule about quantity of pictures per post or how they are displayed? I can only get one to attach per post. Any way to make them part of the post rather than an attachment?

For the picture thing you can post a message and then reply to it with advanced reply and add more pictures. If you have photos on another site you can link them here with the yellow square with the mountain on it above. We have a test forum here that you can play around in to learn an experiment in without a lot of flack from the members or messing up this thread.

You may be limited on the attachment size since you are a new member. I can't say for sure though. I'd recommend getting a Photobucket aka PB (or something similar) and use that to post up pictures.

When you use img links like PB I don't believe there is a either but I think there is a post limit size. I, personally prefer to limit pictures in my posts to 2 or 3. This prevents somebody from quoting 8-10 pictures since most won't edit a quote to show the one picture the want in the quote.

Link to PB and it's free to join.

Onward. Here is a shot of progress on the attached garage which will be for daily drivers and lawn equipment. I won't show much here except to provide a little insight into why my detached shop is "small".

Welcome to the GJ
looking over your floor plan it struck me that your 8' door will limit you a lot loading and unloading for a spray booth and also moving equipment in and out

Looking forward to more posts

I believe most commercial paint booths are 9 foot ceiling with about 8 foot doors. I could increase the other door to 9 foot, but I never had issues with 8 feet at my old shop.

I want the ceiling in the booth area to be relatively low for lighting and ventilation reasons. If there is a particular activity that you are thinking of that may require a taller door, let me know.

Thanks!

A couple previous and ongoing projects. I built the factory five replica when I finished college and am currently working on a 75 FJ40. Pic of the FJ is in my old shop.

Nice projects! Looking forward to updates on your shop and the 40. Do you have a build thread going on the 40 over on MUD?

Yes. Its in the 40 section, just search for "02/75 Restoration". Its been a great project for learning to weld and do body work.

Here is another photo showing the front elevation of the shop. Framing has not started yet, so please let me know if you see any issues or changes I should make. There will be transom windows on the front and rear elevation. Paint booth will have two 24" exhaust fans mounted near the floor level. I plan to build an intake filter section either in the adjoining wall or in the ceiling (or maybe even one that goes in the garage door opening). Keep in mind I will only use this area for painting about one week out of the year.

I have thought about the door height and can't imagine I will ever work on a project taller than 8 feet. The FJ40 with a lift will clear by 8" or so. I may bring the door to the lift area up to 9'. Anything that goes in for paint can be lowered by removing wheels.
