My pickups from today

I hit an antique store while driving through Alabama and picked up a few old tools. How'd I do?

attachment.php

This Proto 4041 puller just looked too good to leave on the table for $10. I figured it would be useful to have one day.

I had a hard time leaving this Wilton 806 drop forged 7x3" c-clamp for $10, but it is missing the little swivel pad. Can they be replaced?

Finally, I let this Craftsman 506.51920 7" woodworker's vise (made by Columbian) follow me home. I am going to put a bench together for my little boy and I thought this would be great for it. Unlike the 10" vise on my bench, this should be light enough for small hands to use. At $35, it will not shatter my world (much) if he cracks it one day.

I like these Craftsman (Columbian) vises. This is not a quick release like it's big brother that I previously restored, but I think that just makes it more intuitive for my little boy, when I give it to him.

Well done! I'm envious of your clamp! Heck, I'm envious of the whole lot. ^_^

I cleaned up and restored the clamp. I still need to straighten out the bar a bit, but it is usable now.

Right On! My mom lives in Anniston. Where are the good places to pick up vintage tools around there? PM me if you want to. Thanks.

im just north of anniston a bit and in attalla they have a pretty big flea market called mountain top and it usually has a fair number of people selling antiques and tools both old and ne,on most sundays with good weather its packed full of people selling. if you ever go there, the food is great and try to get their early so you can park at the bottom and walk to the top to start.

and that vise cleaned up really good dragon

I'll have to check that out. I like driving through Anniston. The restored vise in the photo is another vise I did. I have not done the new one yet.

Okay, here is the 506-51920 restored (finally). I was waiting to get my blasting cabinet set up, and now that it's here, this was my first project.

Nice finds and great work on restoring them. I hope you visited the Barber Museum and Bass Pro while you were in Leeds. We travel between Arkansas and Georgia quite a bit and lately I've been taking the back roads from Anniston to Tupelo, MS. It's a great drive and lets us avoid Birmingham. I don't know where you are from in NE Mississippi, but my Grandmother was born in Byhalia.

Thanks :)

Bass pro is a nice place to take a break from driving, especially if you've got kids with you who would enjoy the aquarium. I find their prices a bit on the high side, but I like to look around when I'm there.

Did you end up ordering one of the c-clamp replacement pads from McMaster Carr?

I also have a Wilton 806, which is also missing the pad. I wonder if that was a common issue with this clamp?

Hey, what hammered color and brand is that? The vise looks great!

Rustoleum Hammered light blue. Thanks!

I bought mine on ebay, but I think zoro and maybe amazon carry them. Swivel pads need to fit the ball on the spindle within about .005" to work right, I think. The pad is retained with a little steel clip, which can be pulled out given enough force. My clamp still had the retainer clip, but the pad was AWOL.

just saw this, thanks for posting. love the woodworking clamp, but more importantly, thanks for the info on the swivel pads. had no idea you could buy them, or how the were attached. I have several nice clamps I never use because they are missing, and pass up big ole clamps all the time for cheap because they are missing.

Five minutes of blasting, a $6 pad, a little paint, and a minute to wire wheel and cold blue the screw gets you a nice new clamp.
