New guy, might as well get my feet wet. After seeing some of the garages on here I'm kinda humble but my garage works for me. Actually I'd have all the room I need if precious didn't believe that she has the right to park her car in my garage, not gonna win that one.

Crab: i saw your introduction thread and you mentioned that you are thinking about types of flooring to use. do you want to ask the forum what they think is best and give them your choices?

it's good to post pictures, but if you don't ask any questions or keep posting updates threads disappear pretty quickly.

I always go by the theory of "happy wife, happy life", but also try to get a couple things you like is my thinking.

you also mentioned a temporary storage and one option is to have one of those containers dropped off at your house for a month or two while you put down your floor and get garage like you want it or some storage units have $1 for the first month. other storage units might be a bit nicer and more secure so your choice.

good luck and again welcome to our forum.

Thanks, I would like some opinions on flooring. Cost is always a consideration but how long a floor would last without a redo is a biggy. If I move all that stuff out to do it I want it to last 10 years or more. The way oil will stain a floor you would think there would be a stain you could use that would be absorbed by the floor. The race deck looks good but that could get pricey I think. If it was 2 grand, well I could buy a good tig for that.

Check into UCOATIT epoxy. Did mine many years ago and has held up good. did the whole thing in about 5 day's and that included the floor sanding for 2 day's, 1 day laying and a couple days to dry. Pulled everything out and tarped it up and went to town on it. Nice ESAB unit BTW. I have the same machine for 10 years and love it.

Thanks, I guess you mean the mig . Did you notice the plasma under the small work bench ? I made most of the stuff in the pictures with that machine, it is smooth . Do you think I could move everything to one side and do the floor on the empty side and then switch and do the other ? That would be the easiest way . That's probably a bad idea . I'll check out the UCOATIT . Have you ever needed to touch it up ?

Yea I was talking the mig. I have a Hypertherm for plasma. You could do half at at a time I don't see why not. I would probably lay a tape line to go to so you end with a straight line for blending purposes. The hardest part of epoxy is getting the concrete prepared and that is where getting everything out is a plus.

It would probably be quicker and easier to just get everything out and do it all at once. You know you have to move everything anyway. I have an 8 x 12 open trailer with a ramp tailgate I could use to take everything to a storage place. Be a good time to get a bigger enclosed trailer. I have a friend who has been talking about one. I'll tell him that he really needs to get that 16 enclosed, maybe he should get a 20.

Thanks modern jess, it was set up as a shop and it does work out pretty good. There's not much you can't do , when I paint I cover everything with plastic. I have HVLP guns but you'll still get paint dust everywhere. I really enjoy paint work, nothing like seeing the color go on but it's about the most mess you can make in a garage. Fab work is pretty messy to but you can just sweep that up. If you use a garage it's gonna get dirty. For some strange reason my wife doesn't seem to like the smell of paint and she imagines that she can smell it for a week after I have painted. She's even gone so far as to say that it probably isn't good for you. Sweet little thing.

Crab: one thing I'm going to do when i rattle can paint medium to small things is grab an old shipping crate that has all the sides on it to keep the paint from going everywhere. i used to paint in my driveway which isn't any fun and uses way more paint than gets on a project if the wind is blowing.

a huge cardboard appliance box i heard also works as well as plastic with 1 x 2 wood framing you can set up like a box. i'm also considering gutting an old not working fridge for smaller items so when it's not in use it has a sort of cool look in my shop.

good to see you are getting around the forum ok and good luck with the Happy wife, happy life theory we all should live by.

cheers

I seldom rattle can anymore, even small jobs I get the touch up gun out. I just buy a pint of rustoleum or whatever and thin it a little. Sprays a lot better and lot's cheaper. It's the bigger stuff that causes problems, like the rear bumper for my pickup. Actually when I use a polyurethane is when the smell hangs around and that stuff is definitely not good for you.

Crab: just curious how big of a compressor you use and do you use dry air through a filtering system for painting or just plug it in the compressor? also can you post a picture of your paint guns so i can see because i would love to not have to use a rattle gun again.

hope you don't mind the questions, but is clean up difficult and about how long does it take? do you just run mineral spirits through the lines and gun when you are done so you'll be ready to paint the next time?

not sure if this is an issue in your area, but i'm thinking of a shop oven so i can warm up projects in the winter and then put them back in oven to sort of bake on the paint. or is it always over 60 where you live? by the way you might get better answers to some of your questions if you put an area that you live in on your profile so it shows under your avitar.

I'll take some pictures today hopefully . I ran air line and have a dryer and filter in line . They're small craftsman units but seem to work fine, never have had a problem . The compressor is a 6 hp 60 gal. craftsman that I've had for about 10 years . It wasn't that much , I think around 600 and I really haven't had any problems with it . It is pretty loud though . How much prep I do before I paint depends on what I'm painting , something small doesn't really need anything but on bigger stuff I cover everything with plastic . By bigger stuff I mean stuff like a motorcycle tank and fenders . Clean up amounts to taking the plastic off everything and sweeping the floor, not bad really . I have an electric heater that hangs from the ceiling , it's not very big and I originally thought that I would probably need 2 of them but figured I would try 1 first and add another if needed , well just the one will get it up to 75 degrees when its 10 degrees outside which is warm enough to paint and dry . I bought the heater at Grainger and it cost around 200 as I recall, probably the best 200 I ever spent . The garage is well insulated which I'm sure makes a big difference . When it's cold out and I want to play in the garage I go out and turn the heater on about an hour before and it's nice and toasty . I used PVC pipe to run my air lines and that was also fairly cheap and hasn't been any problem in about 10 years . My air compressor is set at 125 PSI . If you were going to use air everyday you'd want to get better stuff probably but for what I do it's a pretty good setup without spending a lot of money . I live in St Louis Mo., it does get cold here, sometimes down to 0 but it usually doesn't last to long. Last week it was cold, 10 degrees, and this week has been in the 50s . Winter usually last about 3 months, Jan, Feb, and about half of March. Not a bad climate really . Before you guys in Florida get started , you guys have a few months you don't want to be outside to , it's just a different time of year and it's the heat instead of the cold . It's not supposed to be 90 on Christmas day .

Traded for a new Road Glide last week, got it home and on the lift to change a few things and the lift wouldn't work. Guess my present project is fixing the lift. I put a new motor and transmission on it last year. Probably should have just bought a new lift but it would have been 1500 and the new motor and ****** was 500. This is just something with the screw, not serious, just kind of a PIA. I'll get those pictures taken, been busy.
