FYI I think I see why you went with Fetter. Price is a little better and you could finish bringing costs down significantly had you done a whole turnkey solution through someone like Morton. I'm gonna get quotes from Mrton, Ftterville, cbstructures, and us steel even (why not?) I'll also see what builders are offering with stick built services/products.

SO you went with fetterville? Where are they located and did they use their own inhouse team to build it for you? I'm staring at a CB Structure ad. They're showing 24x32x10 two level cupola, 3 windows, concrete floor excavation, electric for 33,500. What is your first reaction to that?

Curious because I live with an 2 hrs of you and I'm getting ready to go through the quote routine just as soon as I have a better idea of my constraints. Thanks man.

Fetterville is out of Pennsylvania but they have a salesman local to me. They have their own crews that travel with the supplies and do the build. Three guys did my build and they work very hard and long hours. I had CB Structure give me a quote too. Fetterville was cheaper. How much electric work for that price?

Man I'm not sure I remember. For some reason I believe he said 60 amp service. I can't imagine it would be much electric. Spoke with a couple of companies to get an idea how much it would cost to build a shell with concrete slab. I'm looking at something right now that is roughly 1900 square feet with a loft. in your experience, roughly how much money should I expect to pay? I believe there's a chance that I will do as you did; run my own electric, build my own walls, insulate, etc.. I'm not much of a handyman but I have friends in the trades.

I have sprayed 22 gallons of primer and 10 gallons of ceiling paint. Lots more painting to go but everything has at least one coat of paint. A couple updated pictures in the album.

I have completed all the painting. I sprayed or rolled another 20 gallons. I have started laying the flooring upstairs also. I added another 6 pictures to the album.

I finished laying all the vinyl flooring upstairs and then I put some porcelain tile down at the front entrance and in the downstairs bathroom. My wife picked out the tile to go with the concrete floors that will be downstairs. I finished grouting the tile today. New pictures added.

I was too busy trying to finish it the last few months to get any pictures up. We sold the house and moved into the garage around July 15th. I have been struggling to finish up things around all the clutter now. I will try to get some progress pictures up in the next couple weeks.

Hi Kj,

I know this is an older post, but your building looks great. I was just curious did you use 6x6 posts or any 8x8s? I'm considering a similar building and all the plans I've seen use 6x6 posts, but was concerned if I add a second floor if the 6x6 will be enough post support.

Xwalt,

Sorry for the late reply. I didn't see this until today. Those are solid 6 x 6 treated posts for the main building. They used 4 x 6 posts for the porch.

I figured it was about time that I updated my barn build thread since I enjoy reading about so many other builds.
It has been about 6 years since our house was completed and we moved out of the barn/garage into our dream home. After the 1.5 years in the barn, my wife was very happy to move. The home build really slowed down any work I could do on the barn because we left many things unfinished on the house since it would have taken another $50,000+ to have the builder/subs do the work. I have completed many of those projects so in the last year I started working on the barn again. First thing done was rearranging all the stuff dumped in a few of the rooms to free up space and putting things away in the old kitchen cabinets. I then moved on to building some work bench space.

The Mustang rebuild is still on hold until I finish some more of my wife's honey do list which continues to get longer.
After getting the shop side semi useable, I moved on to tearing out the temporary bedroom walls on the second floor.

This is with the paneling pulled off the temporary walls. Pulled all the studs out and then my daughter and her husband called me and said since they hadn't been able to buy a home in the last 8 months where they lived, could they use the barn as a temporary home. Both work remote so they were going to hop from Air BnB homes across the country for about a month or 2 at a time and come home occasionally. I agreed but told them they had to help work on the space.

I built a new 6' stub wall to create a more private space in the big room and drywalled that. I then had to crawl around in the scissors truss space attic to move electric for lights and a smoke detector. That sucked as I am over 6'3" and I had about 3' at the highest spot. Installed some led adjustable spot lights and a ceiling fan/light and removed the two florescent light fixtures.

The kids came up for a weekend and helped repaint the room. I was working on adding a closet door about a week later and my daughter calls and says "we bought a house". Gee thanks, I was happy for them but knew I would get pulled into their remodel as it was a 125 year old house. A few months later after their kitchen gut and redo, wife and I are looking at the barn space and she proposes to fix it up more and turn it into a Air BnB unit. So I found some discontinued LVP at Lowes and installed it throughout the space. Then I bought some rough cut pine boards from a local small sawmill guy and turned it into new baseboard.

Then I dressed up the cheap pine stairs with beardboard and stain.

Got a nice piece of live edge pine from my neighbor for a bar/sitting area.
