Here are a few pics (at least I'll attempt to post pics) from my project. Devoe Devran 224HS 77% solids 2 part epoxy for prime coat and main coat, with a medium broadcast of flakes, topped with their 379UVA clear coat (UV stabilized).

Although it is only 400 ft2, it took me much more time than I realized.

My hat is off to you professionals... you make it look so easy.:bowdown::bowdown:

The first 2 pics are after the primer coat.

That looks great. Do you mind letting us know what the materials cost for your project?

That looks great. Do you mind letting us know what the materials cost for your project?

I used 3 kits of Devran 224HS (one for "primer" and two for main coat). The 224HS kits are $37.50x2 (it is a 1:1 mix of epoxy & converter). So, 1 kit costs $75 total and yields 2 gal. of mix.

I used 2 kits of 379UVA clear coat. Unlike the 224, each kit of 379 mixes 1:4 product to converter. When mixed together, each kit yields 1.25 gal, and I used 2 kits. Each kit was $80.

I bought 15 pounds of chips @ $3.15 per pound. I actually used about 10 of them; I only wanted a medium broadcast. If I had to do it over again, I would have used all 15 pounds; I was able to return the surplus.

I also bought "shark grit" for $ 14.50 to add to the clear coat as an anti-slip agent (the quantity they sold me was good for 5 kits, but I only used 2/5 of it. The chips and shark grit came from a concrete supply store --

Then of course there were other consumables...

  • 2 gal of concrete cleaner -- about $12 total
  • 4 gal of muriatic acid (swimming pool strength) -- about $18
  • "flower watering can" made of plastic - about $5
  • 3 roller covers suitable for epoxy -- $11 total
  • 3 5Gal plastic pails -- about $13
  • disposable brushes to cut in the edges -- about $8
  • plastic sheeting & masking tape -- about $15

For "spikes" I bought a pair of old spiked golf shoes at a 2nd hand store -- $10. This isn't as good as the spikes the concrete pro's use, but after broadcasting the chips, I couldn't see the marks left by the golf shoes.

I used an old roller frame, which ultimately I tossed. I was able to use the frame for each step. I also had disposable plastic gloves.

I didn't "thin" my mixes (although I would do so if I were able to go back & do it over again). A gallon of thinner specified on the data sheet for the 224HS was about $26, if I recall correctly. And the thinner for the 379 clear coat was a different product -- I don't remember how much it cost.

I had originally planned to have the surface shot-blasted, but ended up doing the muriatic acid path. I already had a stiff brush & a power washer too.

It is a ton of work... but worth it.

The products I used were NOT "100%" solids. I wanted to use the 100% solids formulas, but I was scared of the "pot life" of about 30 mins. I just didn't think I had the skill to cut in the edges & control joints & roll out the slab in that amount of time. A pro can do it, but I'm not a pro and I'm old & stiff. The 224 product had a pot life of several hours. It turns out each coat took me about an hour, so I guess I made the right decision for me.

Nice job! I am probably going to do the same project soon and have a few questions if you don't mind.

How long do you wait to put the second coat down? I have read the product specs and it was somewhat confusing.

Also, it appears that the spread rate is not as great as what it says on the package. I have a 400 sq. foot garage, plus an apron adding another 50 sq. feet or so. I was hoping that the 2 kits would be enough, but it does not look like it.

Were you able to get the flakes from the Devoe dealer? Did you add any slip-resistant material to the clear coat?

Can you put the clear coat on a few days later?

Sorry to be a pest, but I am new at this and am looking for advice.

Hi Ranger1227,

My only experience is with this specific Devoe product. (Well, on a different house, I used a water based quickrete kit about 10+ years ago). I don't think my experience can be generalized to other products -- so if you decide on a different product, post on this forum again & ask for advice... there a a handful of very experienced, very knowledgeable, very smart people here (I'm not one of them, btw) who in general have been very willing to pass along pointers and wisdom.

Q1: How long do you wait to put the second coat down? I have read the product specs and it was somewhat confusing.

A1: I waited 24 hours. I applied in the late afternoon. I think you could & proably should ask your ICI / Devoe paint dealer. I'm posting a pic of the product info here. My reading of the table indicates MINIMUM recoat time of a 60 degree slab is 8 hours; MAXIMUM is 30 days (if you recoat with the very same product) at the given dry film thickness of 6 mils. So you could easily wait a couple days between coats... or do part one weekend and more the following weekend, if my interpretation is correct. Again, ask the experts at the ICI store (call on the phone -- if you don't trust you're talking to someone who knows this product well, try a different store).

Q2: I was hoping that the 2 kits would be enough, but it does not look like it.
A2: I did a 400 sq foot garage, but I didn't do the apron. The concrete soaks up that first primer coat; I barely had enough. You'll definitely need 1 full kit for the primer. As you are planning on doing the apron, if I were you, I'd suggest getting the thinner (ICI Devoe T10 thinner, I think) to help it go farther. You might be able to get away without priming the apron if you're worried about running out of product on the primer coat.

Don't forget some product waste is pretty much a given if you're a DIY.

For the 2nd coat, I originally thought I could use a single kit -- but the data sheet says coverage is "300 sq ft per kit" and I had 400 sq ft. The ICI store told me I absolutely needed to use 2 kits. They were right... especially since you're doing the apron, I would suggest getting the extra kit (1 kit for prime, 2 kits for main coat = 3 kits).

Note that for the clear coat, 1 kit covers 500 sq ft, so all you need is 1.

Q3: Were you able to get the flakes from the Devoe dealer? Did you add any slip-resistant material to the clear coat?

A3: No, the ICI dealer didn't sell flakes. I asked them were to get flakes, and they told me a concrete supply store nearby. The concrete supply also sold me the anti-slip additive ("Shark Grit").

ALSO, read this thread about paint chips... http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=17422

Q4: Can you put the clear coat on a few days later?
A4: My reading of the product information is "yes" but of course, ask the ICI store guys - they know their product far better than me.

Oh - definitely get a respirator at the paint store. You'll need it. Don't skimp.

Hope this helps... and good luck!:bounce::)

Any updates on how the devran has held up?
