I am going to post some periodic updates on my garage project. I put in new can lights two weeks ago and last night finished up redoing some old kitchen cabinets for my workbench. These were freebies, veneer was falling off, you name it. So, I sanded the doors and drawer fronts down, painted them with automotive black and installed a sheetmetal countertop that I paid $17 for at the local sheetmetal shop. All in all, not bad for a total $90 investment.

Nice,

great job landing a $17 top.

How bright are the can lights? it seems to me that a can with a 75 watt bulb is just as good as a 2 tube 40 watt per tube fluorescent. I'm thinking of filling my garage with cans

I had flourescents and could never really see very well, that's why I changed to the can lights. With 10 cans on each side of the garage (24'w x 30'd) the lighting is outstanding....I am very happy..I think that once I repaint the ceiling with semigloss white instead of the flat eggshell on it now, and get my semigloss paint on the walls and white and black vct on the floor; visibility should be even better.

You're right - the paint should really brighten it up. I'm really looking at putting cans in my garage - probably 20 to 24 in 30'x30'

Not bad?! It's ****** brilliant! Beats the hell out of spending hundreds or even
thousands on fancy cabinets! I'm plotting the downfall of my kitchen for just such a salvage mission for my future shed.

good idea with the sheet metal top, i've got an old "L" shaped shink counter top in one corner of my garage............problem is that it's pink.......I think i'm going to look copying your idea............
how thick did you use?
and how'd you attach it?

cabinets look good also.

It's 24 gauge...the sides and front are bent down, then a 1/4 inch back in, so it just slides on from the front with a nice snug fit. I was thinking of gluing it down, but once the bench grinder and vice are bolted down, that pretty well takes care of it moving.

I have left the cabinets behind and moved on to drywall repair and painting now...and I have almost talked myself into ordering racedeck..
