My turn to start a Race Deck thread!!

I final ordered my floor. I have been in my new house for about 3 years and planned from day 1 to put down tile. In my last house, I did a 2-car garage in ceramic tile and I loved the way it came out! The only negative was how much hard work was involved. I am no slouch, but to do it again and for a 3-car garage, um, the more I thought of it, the more I was dreading starting!

That was the main reason why I didn't start....fast forward to me join GJ and seeing the threads about RaceDeck and I liked the way they were turning out. Got some samples, placed my order and bam, it will be here Monday the 20th!

I went with the TuffShield and think it'll look great! I am adding some more cabinets to the garage and will take some pics tomorrow and post up how it is now. Once I start the project, I'll be updating this thread with my progress!

Feel free to ask any questions.

Can't wait to see the end result. I was watching the 24 hours of LeMans this weekend and noticed a lot of teams with RaceDeck tiles.

I was in exactly the same boat as you, except I had tiled a 2500 sq' Pool Deck and wanted to tile my new house's 3 car garage and my heart just wasn't up to it.

Racedeck and maybe 5 hours and I was done(lots of Cuts). I also don't have to worry about grout discoloration either.

Cool!

My floor arrived today, but it'll be a few days before I can get started. I have a few other projects I want to do before the floor!

Do you have any pics of your floor??

Thanks!
Jimmy

Congrats. You will love it. Be careful of those projects... I got my RD back in August and have a little more than half down now. I'm hoping to finish it over the 3-day Fourth weekend.

I'm only posting these pix cause you're a friend of mine Jimmy!

Seriously though, this is a new house purchase and I wanted to do the floor and a bunch of other stuff before I moved in. Unfortunately I didn't have time to get a nice clean money shot before all the stuff got in.

The best shot I have shows the pattern, but the side cuts weren't done and the edges weren't down.

But it will give you an idea.

I really Love the Floor!

Hi there!
That looks fantastic!
Can I ask a couple of questions?
Why did you use underlay, and did you use the larger 18" tiles for the main area of the garage, or just the 12"?

Cheers,

Chris

Sure, ask away!

When I got some samples, I walked on them in the garage and they clacked kinda loud to me. The underlay was mentioned here, so I got relatively heavy underlay that is 5 0z Landscape cloth. It is much quieter. That's a personal option. Some guys here say it's not necessary, but I was laying down once and for all, and there was a "high heels" kinda clack to the tile with no underlayment.

All the tiles are 12" I decided that the checkerboard would be too "busy" if it were laid in 12x12" color squares, so I laid in 24"x24" color squares, which is how they come out of the box.

They lay down a lot quicker that way too! The 2'x2' squares impart a surface texture from the mold process also. I used the FF to get another "surface texture look". I also tried to mix some 1' wide bands with 2' wide stuff.

Foe such a simple pattern, I went thru a lot of different setups till I settled on this one. I would say spend a lot of time looking at the Racedeck galleries and play with the design tool a lot for a few weeks.

Got a question for ya Les. Choice of the coin pattern over the diamond. Is there a benifit to the coin over the diamond or is it purely whichever one you like better. Does the coin pattern clean up easier or provide more traction?

Do you plan to use the edge pieces at the entrance to the garage? The floor pattern looks great!

Hey!,

I chose the Coin Pattern because it supposedly is much easier to clean up than the Diamond pattern. Apparently the diamond pattern holds a lot of dirt where the diamond meets the surface of the tile.

I originally was looking at the diamond pattern, but changed to Circle track because of this.
