i dont post alot but thought i'd share my recent sears experience. i brought my professional linesmans pliers in for exchange, i know from this board that they stopped making them and wanted a new pair to last me until i could find a similar pair made by someone else. well they didnt have anymore, so i figured they were gonna stick me with a low quality substitute (had that happen before), but they just refunded me the last catalog price for the pliers. i thought that was pretty cool. now im gonna use the refund towards a pair of channel lock brand. i hope this is gonna be how they handle discontinued tools from now on.

When I worked at Sears; it was typical policy to refund the last listed price, gift card for credit or give a equivalent other craftsman, other branded tool (equal or lesser value) if the customer wanted one. If the customer opted for the non craftsman branded equivalent; then, they were under the warranty given by the manufacturer.... most companies do not have the lifetime/satisfaction based warranty that Sears provides. We got a corporate print out on the process with: tape measures and hammers when they were removed from the Craftsman line. This is not atypical for other tools that get discontinued; some really old items, might require consultation and confirmation with a corporate help through email. If you are not happy or don't get the help you need; ask for a manager and if they do not help... contact the Sears Customer relations hotline.. good luck!

You got lucky, I saw an older gentlemen [probably late 60's to mid 70's] bring in a 100' tape measure. They replaced it with one, but told him that was the last time they would warranty it because they no longer carried a Craftsman brand and the Stanley was his only option. Given his appearance of health, I don't think he'll break it before his time, but that was still not my idea of backing the product. I guess that's the best they could really do though.

I saw the same thing with a Craftsman tape measure...replaced with a Stanley and told they would no longer cover it...

I broke my Craftsman 25' yesterday, I read up on line what the options were and stopped by sears (little Hometown store). They would have replaced it a Stanley. That would have been fine but it was a Chrome Stanley, which would have been alright but it was cheap plastic. Atleast the craftsman had rubber covering part of the yellow rugged plastic.
