I've been getting some new things, so I'll update this first post with the new pics.

I’ve recently been buying Truecraft tools. For those who don’t know, these were tools sold by Daido Corporation, a Japanese company. The tools were mostly made in Japan, with some made in the USA or Spain. According to Alloy Artifacts, Daido closed down the brand around 2000. Most of the tools you’ll see will be NOS that are being sold by liquidators.

Alloy Artifacts has a little info on the company.
Link to Truecraft article.

Wrenches
I saw this Japanese-made metric wrench set at a swap meet, but didn’t buy it. I regretted not picking it up, so I bought it about a month later when I went back and the seller still had it. It goes from 8mm - 22mm. It didn’t have the 20mm or 18mm. I’ve since found an 18mm, but it’s not polished like the rest. I replaced the 20mm with a KD full polish, which is just about the right length and fits the set very well.

These wrenches have a nicely polished finish. They are NOS, so they have some storage wear. They are made in Japan. They have a box end that appears very similar to the Bonney Loc-Rite design. I believe this wrench set was produced in the brand’s later years, as older Truecraft wrenches don’t have a Flank-Drive style box end.

Also, Truecraft sold some wrenches that were made by the Spanish tool company Palmera, which is now owned by Snap-On. These wrenches are an older design and don't have off-corner engagement on the box end.

Ratchets

Truecraft offered several styles of ratchets. All the ones I’ve seen in person were made in Japan, but I’ve seen a couple Spanish ratchets on ebay.

This is the course-tooth round head model. These have about 43 teeth. They are a simple design, but appear well made.

The ratchets are also quite long. My Wright 3490 was my longest ⅜” drive ratchet, but the Truecraft is just as long. They are just over 7-3/4” long.

I recently got a really cool Truecraft 1/2" drive ratchet. It's a fine-tooth design with around 72 clicks per revolution.

It appears this ratchet was made for Daido by TOP, a Japanese tool company. TOP still makes tools. In fact, Level Chrome sells this exact ratchet for $39. http://www.levelchrome.com/TOP-RH4-12-Drive-Ratchet-_p_241.html

Anyway, here are pics of the Truecraft 40133 ratchet. It has a FACOM-style single-pawl design.

Sockets
I bought two socket sets from a company called Satco Supply. The sockets turned out to be USA made.

All the Truecraft sockets I’ve found were either made in the USA or made in Japan. Some of the older Japanese sockets don’t have off-corner engagement. The newer, USA-made sockets appear to have been made by Danaher. These sockets appear to be the same as the Craftsman/KD/Allen/NAPA sockets that Danaher produced.

The last two pics compare the Truecraft USA to the Craftsman socket.

I also like Truecraft extension. They're simple but appear well made. All the extensions I've seen are made in Japan.

Insteresting to see that their double-hex broaching is like the Loc-rite profile, like you mentioned.

So is are the non-Palmera Truecraft wrenches stamped "Japan" on the back?

That ratchet is produced by SEK (Suekage Tool Company). They supplied roundhead rats, sockets, wrenches in open stock and sets to various US retail outlets to some degree, namely KAL Tools, Oxwall, Wards, Fleetfarm, Craftsman.

Daido's US branch mostlikely closed down the Truecraft brand due to the US dollar / Japanese Yen exchange rates. It became too expensive to purchase Made-in-Japan.

You're right about SEK making these. I found a website in Japanese that has their catalog in PDF form.

This link has some of the ratchets, and it looks like SEK still makes them.

I have the same truecraft ratchet. On mine the selector often has a mind of it's own; tried cleaning it but it didn't help. The design looks very similar to the Craftsman round head fine tooth of the 70's. I have a 3/8'' version of that Craftsman on the way so when I receive it I'm going to compare the guts.

Dad had bought several of the 3/4'' drive sockets and breaker bar when he was still driving. I have them now at the shop and those seem well made.

I have a truecraft 1/2'' drive round head ratchet that needs a kit. Does anyone know if kits are available anywhere? It was a great ratchet and would love to be able repair it and use it again.

Had a set of Truecraft Metric Saltus wrenches in the late 1970's, they were great until some dumb a** stole them along with the rest of my tools.

I have a few TrueCraft tools like rachets and some wrenches. My oddest peice is a 5 pc TrueCraft in red bottom molded to each with a clear top. The set has a star connector instead of 1/4" square. This allows each tool extreame angles. Would you like to see pictrue of the set IF they can be found?

Thanks, JASTECH

Yes. I didn't take a closeup pic, but they are marked "JAPAN".

OK, thanks.

Yup, they still produce their hardline stuff in Japan (ratchets/socketry). In Japan, their traditional SEK line offers good cost to performance ratio.

Good to know. I often see Truecraft sockets at the pawnshop. I associated them with cheap autoparts store sockets. I may have to pick a few up. Thanks for the heads up.

Here are pics of all the ratchets I have now. If you have one that isn't in this pic, I may be interested in purchasing it.

I also got a couple other Truecraft tools today. I'll try to post some pics of them tonight.

I've got a stubby, flex head, fine tooth with finger drive ratchet. It's my go to ratchet for tight places.

I happened to find a couple Truecraft tools today at a flea market.

8" pair of pliers. Made in Japan.

#3 Phillips USA made.

I also found something that may be a distant relative of my Truecraft tools. I found a very interesting ratchet. I happened to see the spinner and thought it was a Craftsman RHFT. When I picked it up I saw it was made in Korea and marked "Daido." If you remember, Daido is the company that marketed Truecraft tools. From what I've seen, Daido only marketed the tools and they were actually produced for Daido by other companies.

This ratchet is very unique. The mechanism is held in with a round snap ring, which is very common. But, on this ratchet the spring is on the selector side. I've never seen that before. The rest of the ratchet is an average single-pawl round head design.

After I cleaned it up I was bummed to find out it's not a great ratchet. It's a significant step below the Japanese Truecraft ratchets I have. The Daido is pretty rough in one direction. I may try completely tearing down the mechanism and cleaning it some more, but right now I'm not too impressed. Oh well, I probably paid $2 or $3 for it.

Stephen9666,

Nice find on the Daido Korea ratchet. I recall the mention of Daido importing tools from South Korea in a really old thread. Nice to see an actual photo of it. Daido North America was probably enticed by the prospect of making a killing if the South Korean tool makers were able to produce a worthy product (thinking of monetary exchange rates)....but perhaps what came out of there wasn't overly impressive and turned out to be just a limited run.

Yup, I've never seen a mechanism that was held in place with the ring on the selector side either.

The South Koreans have been known to produce good stainless steel products; is the ratchet handle SS?

JASTECH,

No worries. Have you fed your bulls yet? :D

Some new ratchets arrived today. I got these off ebay. This seller has a lot of Truecraft tools.

I was pleasantly surprised to see that they were still in the original packaging. It didn't say anything about that in the auction.

The newer and older ratchets have a very similar design. I didn't count the teeth to see if it is different. But, there are some very small differences. The new mechanism would not fit in the older ratchet. I don't know if the older ratchet was made by Suekage like hte newer ones, or another company.

Does anyone know if its possible to warranty Truecraft tools? Im trying to fix a ratchet for a buddy, he has owned this ratchet forever. It slipped and the little stud on the reverse cover broke off, now the ratchet just freewheels. Last night I drilled out the stud and im planning on tapping and inserting a new stud. But, its in pretty rough shape so if I can just mail it in for warranty that would be perfect!

They're out of business, but some places still have lots of rebuild kits.

What's the part number of the ratchet?

How are they holding up from use? Like are they starting to stretch and become floppy at all?

The OEM for those are Ko-ken.

I got a few Truecraft adjustable wrenches from my grandfather's stuff after he passed away several years ago. Like someone else commented, I also thought they were cheap auto parts store tools (which would be out of character for my grandfather) until I used a couple of them.

Dad and I both pretty much grew up in his shop and got first pick of his tools. Since I rarely use adjustable wrenches anymore, I'll probably give them to my cousins this summer, along with a a bunch of other tools and a couple nice rolling toolboxes I took but rarely if ever use.
