Member SMKS sold me a 3/8" Bonney rat with "lazy pawl" syndrome. Took a bit to get it apart and de-gunked, had to "make" a new pawl spring. But she's back together clicking nicely.

Here's a few pics of the procedure. Disassembly of the gear assembly, new detent ball and spring, pawl spring details, assembling the selector, and final pic.

Nice job. Now I know where to send one for repair should I ever have the pleasure of finding one in my travels.

I assumed the issue was something like that. Now that I have a baby I have bigger fish to fry in my very limited spare than repairing old ratchets. I still have several vintage ratchets I frequently use that I rehabbed myself back when I had more time for that kind of stuff.

Anyway, enjoy it.

Thanks for the tool, and congrats on the little one.

Always like your posts Bonneyman. The internals of that look like the internals of my 3/4 drive R701, well sort of the same. Mine has dual pawls and 46 teeth. How does the selector switch come off of the mechanism?

Thank you.
Older Bonney. Not exactly sure. Being it's dual pawl there's probably two pins and a spring between them. Both pins have to be compressed to the point that the selector knob will come off the back. A three handed operation.

How do I get this apart to clean and lube? It turns, but not by hand. It's very tight.

Is it riveted and then ground down?

I believe that era of Bonney is press-fit together. No dis-assembly, unless you want to do some major manufacture and mad work.
If it turns at all, soak it in a solution of 50% acetone/50% automatic transmission fluid. Leave it in there for a week. Every day, take it out and turn the mechanism a bit. Then let it soak some more. Old/dirty grease can be broken up this way and the thing brought back to usefulness.
