Sitting here in the shop/garage, browsing the internet on the shop PC. The place is an absolute wreck as I have just been swamped for months, I haven't done any wood working at all, hardly any fishing, but sitting here on my stool, looking around at the tools I have ammassed, thinking about what to buy next... I can't help but be thankful, I love this 22'x22' square (and the van on the other side of the door). I could, and have, spent entire days in here. I know most on this site are probably the same, but I am really the only person in my family and close freind group thats into tools.

Hope yall had a good Thanksgiving, post a pic of your space, as it sits right now, if your so inclined.

I’m kind of in the same boat as you, except for shop size yours is bigger, in that none of my family or friends are into tools or hanging out in a shop. I chuckled when I saw your jointer, table saw and planer as I have the same brands for mine. My shop is smaller and a mess at the moment so I’ll spare you posting a pic. :lol_hitti

I try to enjoy every minute I spend in my workshop. There have been times when all I did was sit and think or sort through somethings that needed to be thrown out or put away.

As a garage I find your place a horrible waste of vehicle protection, but as a shop it looks like it fills most of your needs. From the number of rods it looks like you spend more time fishing than wrenching/sawing. That's what life's about, doing what you enjoy!

My shop is split between a sports car storage & working space. At times it comes up short, but I can work around it. I have an under counter ice maker that needs repair. I'm a little crowded, so I moved the van out of the two car garage, moved my sports car into that space, & gave myself the entire bay in the shop to work. At my age getting down to work on things at floor level just hurts. I bought a lift table from Harbor Freight, put the ice maker on that, & rolled my work table next to it. I can now stand, or sit on an adjustable shop seat, & work on any part of the ice maker..... When all is done I'll reinstall the ice maker & put the cars back where they belong.

No shop is perfect all the time, but if it lets you do what you want/need, then it's just fine.....

Man, I used to fish a lot more than I have this past year, same with woodworking. I have built a lot of nice stuff in this garage, much of my woodworking stuff has been paid for by commissions, but to think I am not in the red (if this were a business) would be a joke, LOL. I work in healthcare IT as my "real job" and have just been burnt out, I can't see myself at a desk for the next 30 years. Fortunately/unfortunately, I got laid off due to the whole COVID mess last year and this garage supported my family for months (attached a few pics of just a couple of the projects I put out during that time). While out of work, I found myself enjoying life a lot more, so I was determined to figure out how to get away from my desk... Long story short, I ended up purchasing a marine electrical/electronics "business" (in quotes as it was only the owner and his wife previously, never had employees) the first of this year. I was also back to work from the layoff, so have been burning the candle at both ends since. Since healthcare is 24/7, I was able to adjust my shift to afternoons, so I could run the business during the day (obviously I didn't tell my company I had bought a business and was working to leave, told them I had child care issues because the kids where doing COVID virtual school). I planned to work both jobs until the business was in the black, but I am over the BS and wont be far from it after year 1. I have decided to quit the day job in Feb/March after I use up the new years sick and floating holiday time (no reason to leave that on the table this close).

I also am in the process of getting my captains license. Figure if I have time and if needed, I can run charters a day or two a week for extra income. To say I am excited for this coming year, and the opportunity ahead, is an understatement. Many stars lined up to make this all work. Slightly nervous to not have a "guaranteed paycheck," but I think ill manage.

All that to say, I used to woodwork and fish a lot more than I have the past 11 months. I plan to get back to the two of them this coming year, though. Here's to 2022!

Those built-ins look awesome - great work. And congrats on getting away from working for someone else and on to working for you.

I don’t have a picture of my messy basement lol. I have 3 toolboxes. Several mini toolboxes filled with stuff, cardboard boxes filled with tools and supplies, shop equipment like bench grinder, vise which isn’t mounted yet, work bench that isn’t set up. Have the stairs lined with stuff so no one else wants to come down .I still live at home and my parents gave me the whole basement for all my stuff pretty much except my bed and stuff is in my room upstairs. I just in return take care of the laundry and stuff. The only battle I’m facing is not enough room for everything lol I plan on getting another home box soon.

Sounds like you made the best of the "free time" you had. I'm in the same boat (not literally... haha). After COVID and spending time WFH, I spent the time building my ideal shop/house/remote work site. Now with the return from the work in the fall I'm revisiting priorities.

Captains license is a great idea. There is nothing better than being on the water.

My garage also pulls double duty as best it can. I insulated and installed a mini-split last year along with LED lighting, TV, sound, etc. I'm able to park my M Coupe, Jeep XJ and wife's car plus the old CBX and a few mountain bikes inside and still have some room for storage and to work on projects. Just finished re-doing the headliner in the XJ. Meanwhile I'm in the midst of restoring the CBX and a few days ago it was bulk trash day in our neighborhood, so I grabbed the solid wood kitchen table from the curb in front of someone's house and brought it home so I can refinish it. I'll probably use it as a desk in my home office. I still need to work on building some better hidden storage for all the "junk" on the exposed shelving on the side wall. It's a constant work in progress, but I love it.
