a few months ago I was able to pick up a belt-disc sander off CL for $50

I need my stuff to me mobile in my garage as I do not have the excess space.
I like using bottom boxes as mobile bases as they give storage and portability for a reasonable cost.
I recently picked up a small cman lower box with some stuff and my plan was to use this as the base for my sander.
View media item 2363I had to do some fix up work to this box (see my other posting for that) and I re-aranged the drawers with a deep drawer on top. this base is going to act as my 'sanding center' in that I will store my belt sanders, finish sanders, sandpaper, sanding belts, and in general all of my sanding supplies.

the toolbox fortunatly has a 3/16 steel plate on the top from the previous owner. this made it one step easier or I would have cut a piece of plywood to help spread the load out other the thin sheetmetal top of the box.
drilled through the steel plate and the top of the box and the mounted the sander to it....done

Good job. I have that same sander that I got from my father-in-laws estate. I plan onusing it for smaller jobs since I already have a Rockwell 6X20 belt sander ('40's vintage), a 1 1/2" X 20" Chi-Com belt sander and a shop-built 12" disc sander.

I have my MIG welder and plasma cutter on a Craftsman roll cab, too.

I like the idea. But depending on what you are sanding, it seems that the drawers would become very dirty from the dust and grit generated. Will you be using some sort of vac with this application?

I will mostly be doing wood with this one but may do a little metal as well.
you are right that you will get sawdust/grit/dust in the drawers. this sander does have the setup to connect to my shopvac which will cut down on it a bit but otherwose I think its not different than all the other stuff in the garage wgen I am doing wood working. that dust gets everywhere.
as it is my sanding center I will mostly be keeping sandpaper, sanding discs, sanding belts in there so it really wont hurt the stuff.
you could hang a plastic curtain over the front that you would pull up to access the drawers yet it would/should keep alot of the dust out (I think)

Looks great, I have been searching all over the area for a sander like that, I thought it would be an easy find, no luck.

My Dad used to do that all the time. In fact, I have a roll around with two grinders (one with wire wheels) and with a similar sander. I'd have to go look at them, but I think he may have used MDF and bolted the tools to that. He even recessed the bolt heads so the MDF lays flat on the box.

Best of all, if you had many tools...but only one roll-around...you could simply lift them on and off.

I know this is an old thread, but It was funny, as I found the same one on Craigslist, (Around this same time) for $40.00.
But with no stand.
Looks the same as the Dayton Granger sells.
Weren't these sanders around $250.00 in around 1990?
I can remember looking at them at sears and thinking they looked pretty well made.
Thanks,
Tony

That is EXACTLY the type of sander I have been looking for.....talk about a steal....

I have to agree on the use of a roll around as the base.....my radial arm saw had a similar base....just a lot larger....my foot was always hitting it and the base was basically a waste of good space. It's built in now....but I'm getting ready to build a new base for my table saw that will have a lot more functionality.....

Rsanter.....just one thought....while I don't see getting dirt into the drawers as a big issue (just keep them closed), you might find it a bit more comfortable to make the top plate so that it overhangs the front about 2-3"....this would let you pull the sander forward and get closer to it.....and the lip would help keep saw dust out.

I thought about that but that plate was with the toolbox when I got it. the sander is bolted to the top to keep it secure.
for now I have to put any more effort into it as I would like to find or build a cabinet (perhaps buy another of the same and bolt them together) so I can have my edge sander next to this one

Awhile back, I mounted my miter saw on that same style bottom box. I had the box just laying around and was actually going to scrap it, since it was pretty well worn out, but decided against doing so. I've been happy with the results.

Glad to see someone else had a similar idea.

Tony

Yeah, I got 2 of the De Walt "Mobile Planer Stands" on sale from amazon a while back, thinking about mounting both my Delta BOSS sander, and the craftsman sander on either end of one of the De Walt mobile stand's.
Thanks,
Tony

I have this one too, I got at a flea market pretty cheap, and added the
table to it. And Made the belt guard.
Had to supply my own motor.
The spindle (where the pulley goes on) was an odd ball size, and I didn't have a metal lathe at the time, so I fitted/pressed/ tapped/ a piece of 1/2" copper water pipe on to the shaft, and just slipped the belt around the shaft temporarily , and ran it, and filed the copper down to size to fit the pulley bore.

The other craftsman below, I think I paid about $60.00 with the stand, and redid and painted the stand and painted the sander.

Very nice! Question though, how will you keep the sander from moving around when you need to apply a decent amount of pressure to a piece?
