A few weeks ago I had a strong sulpher smell in the garage. I sniffed around and cannot find where it could be coming from. I had three garden tractor batteries one of which I had on a maintainer. None of the three smelled but I took them out to the barn just to eliminate the possibility. I don't park vehicles in the shop and have no plumbing but it is well insulated and heated.
The smell went away and last Saturday I could not smell it at all. Now last night I walk in and the smell is back....any ideas.
It doesn't smell like rotting flesh so I don't think it's a dead mouse.

Geez.....You know what you had? You had the invisable garage stench man (IGSM) out there...Yupp, one day they'll show up, hang around for a week or two, and stink up your garage..... He'll then leave as quick as he came then move onto the next victim.... Hang a few garlic bulbs around the garage door, as this will usually drive them away....

Does this happen after you've had a curry and several pints of ale for tea? Thats generally when that bad smell appears in my garage.

Got any cheap rubber tires like a wheelbarrow or dolly?
They make this terrible harbor freight sulphur smell

Are you down wind from a paper mill or any other industry? Maybe the wind is shifting stankl your way while you are at work.

No other batteries in the garage? We had that smell in one of our stores, had the plumber out to check the drains... took forever to realize it was an electric wheelchair cart battery

If you ever saw the overalls I wear to work in the shop you would know that I know I stink:lol:
No floor drain.
Cheap Chinlee rubber stuff smells smokey to me and none of that.
Closest paper mill is 10 miles away and the smell is only inside the shop.
The only possible batteries are some dry cells.

It's not the chemicals.
A friend came over and said it smells like an overcharged battery.....can't be there isn't one.
It seems to come and go, it was bad Thursday night and Saturday but this afternoon I couldn't smell it at all.

Any exposed wiring that mice or squirrels may have gotten to?

When you smell it again can you try to narrow it to one area of your shop?

Good luck in finding the source.

Could be stink bugs. :headscrat Seriously! Those things stink like hell, and I've noticed them stirring about since it's starting to finally warm up a bit.

It is in one corner but I cannor narrow it further than that.
The entire shop is lite with fluorescents, most newer electronic ballst type and one old style.....I'll have to sniff around.
No sign of stink bugs, this is nastier than stink bugs,I think:sad:

I went looking for dead animals and did not find anything.....other than how much I need to do some cleaning.

Septic for the house is 10-15 feet outside the opposite side of the shop and no smell in that area.

Boxes are Dads 50s Snappy, my Snappys and a newer Craftsman and I am in those quite a bit. I do know that plastic rotting smell.....yuck, but no dice.

No vehicles in the shop and no cats.....does my truck stink?....hell yea:thumbup:,just not like sulfur.

Good idea ^^^ ... I know a bad capacitor(s) can reek like that. Haven't experienced that bad ballast stench yet.

Well the smell has been gone for almost two weeks so no way to trace by smell......I'll keep any eye out for anything weird.

No drain cleaner in there.

I checked caps in two welders and everything works as it should.

Thanks for the help guys.....hopefully it doesn't come back.

If the smeel is gone, it could have been as simple as a dead mouse in the wall. Once it rots enough and dries out, the smell is gone.

Possibly your cordless batteries and charger overcharging. You take batteries off charger and smell disappears, charge batteries and smell comes back.

It's that piesen gas that seeps up thru the ground. You better not go back in there until you have the EPA come in and check it out. That gas makes you feel real tired and thirsty. I have it in my garage. The only thing that makes me feel better is when I sit in the chair for a while and drink a few of cold beers.
