My score from work

Work has been going paperless, so that has left a lot of the file cabinets in the building empty. I asked the president of our division if I could take the two heavy, empty file cabinets in the finance area, he said sure, but to ask the building manager. Her response was to "Take as many as you want." When I said I only wanted those two, she kept telling me that "ten would be better"... lol

So here is my score (only took two for now). These are 1 hr. fire rated file cabinets (and they are the only fire rated file cabinets at work). Each one weighs about 450 pounds. From what I can tell online, these normally start in the $1,000 range and can easily be $2,000 each when new. :eyecrazy:

Those were the only fire rated file cabinets, but there are probably about 100 regular ones (about 40 are probably empty at this point).

We are supposed to be moving buildings and I have been told that they are basically leaving everything and that "within reason" I can take anything else home. There is a 30' fiberglass extension ladder I have my eye on as well... lol Have to wait until we actual move though and will definitely run it past the appropriate people before I remove anything from the building.

Going to use one for actual documents/valuables, but the other might become somewhat of a tool box.

Going paperless! Only 100 file cabinets? Must be a really small company. Everyone knows that modern printer technology has required us to kill trees at a much faster rate than before. I'll believe your company is serious about going paperless when they take out the printers.

If that isn't the truth!

Well that's a huge YOU ****

Being that they are fire rated, I would have taken ten, set them in the garage for a while, then CL's them later on. Even at $200-300 each, someone would be getting a hell of a deal besides you.

If that were my company, every one would have hit the dumpster and no one would been allowed to have any.

Nice work man.

If you have a truck and some time, load up as many as you can, get an add on Craigslist and sell them all. Turn a quick few hundred bucks with minimal effort. . .

As mentioned before, these are the only two fire-rated file cabinets in the building or you can guarantee that I would have been taking more. All of the others are your standard cabinets. When they get a little more serious about moving us, I might try and snag some of the regular cabinet to throw on craigslist. There are not too many of the lateral cabinets, but those are the next I am going to keep my eye on for the garage. LOL

I will let you know. I am sure they would not really mind, but I also do not want to push my luck before we actually move offices and it is a certain thing. But from how the building manager talks, she would be more than happy to have all the empty ones out of the building, NOW. lol

450 lbs each ? Who helped you load them ?

Just a friend and I. We did not need to dead lift the cabinets or anything. Drawers removed gives you 4 drawers at about 15-20 lbs each leaving the cabinet at about 370-390 lbs. Put it on a dolly and roll it out into a trailer and you are good to go.

Congrats man. Always nice to see someone use something and keep it out of our landfills.

I don't know of any snap on boxes that are fire proof. :lol_hitti
