Well I drove by my local scrap yard today and figured I would check out what goodies they might have. I try to stop by every few weeks but really never have any luck. I always ask if they have a vise or anvil and today the guy pointed me to the large pile of heavy scrap and said that a vise was next to the pile. Well I now have my first Wilton bullet vise and this cool old Simplex Jack I found next to the vise. I ended up paying $14.00 for both of these:rocker::rocker:
The Vise works great, just needs a very good cleaning. Looks like someone has greased it lately, cant believe people would scrap something like this.

That Wilton sure looks to have been rode hard and put away wet! But as grandpa always used to say....can't hurt steel! Oh! I forgot, YOU ****!

The "Schiller Park" logo tells us it was after they moved from Chicago, which I believe was in about 1957?
If you unscrew the movable jaw until it comes out of the vise, then turn it over, there is a keyway on the bottom. Often, Wilton vises have a date stamped on the key way.
The date is the warranty expiration date, which would be 5 years after date of manufacture (I think).

I really never thought about the scrap yard untill a couple years ago I was taking off some steel and a guy was walking out with a huge vise that he had got there. Now Its always on my mind that they will be more cool stuff burried in the mounds of steel but I untill yesterday I never found much.

As far as the restore I plan on doing both of them but I am not going to get carried away on the vise as I plan on using it alot.

I got it tore down and started blasting it in the cabinet tonight but I have yet to find a date. It cleaned up pretty good, it does have alot of hammer marks in it but I guess that is good because I wont worry about trying to make it too nice and scared to actually use it.

I walked into the yard office of the local scrap yard today and at the feet of the foreman was a 30-year old 4 1/2" swivel base Wilton machinist vise. I asked him "how much for the vise" and he told me it was going home with him. He had set aside a larger one a year or so ago but someone talked him out of it.

It was scrapped by a local school district when they eliminated all the vocational education classes. I had to settle for a Wilton woodworkers vise I picked off a pallet of 20. Not cheap at $50.00, but like new, including paint and plastic ends on the handle.

You could invest in a pack of JB Weld, fill those dents, sand & paint.
