sweet build.....love the bench n rollintool box idea.....the garage turned out really nice so far....is the inside cladded with the same stuff as the external cladding? ie is it steel or plastic? are you gonna cover up the compressor?

Thanks.

Yes, its steel. The white is a "liner panel" specifically made for inside use. Its thinner, uses less layers of paint etc, and thus is cheaper than the outside steel. The lower grey part is the outside steel.

As for the compressor, I had planned on putting a nice insulated door in, Ive insulated the whole room. However, now with the trailer Im considering moving the compressor out there to free up space and so I never hear it.

---------

Spent about 2 hours cleaning out 4 5-gallon buckets of oily wood chips out of the trailer last night. What a mess.

Getting started

Thus night I painted the next room under the stairs where the parts washer and sink will be. Also installed the FRP board for a back splash for them.

20141026_190706.jpg

Friday I picked up the second 44" HF box.

20141024_181516.jpg

Saturday I pressure washed the inside of the trailer. It looks much less like a place youd be cut up into pieces in now. No pics. I also picked up some supplies to redo the doors with. Hoping to get to that this week.

Last thursday I finally ran several cat5 and coax lines around the building. For network, cameras, and a future tv etc.

Friday they came to do the pest resistant blown in insulation in the attic areas of upstairs. They only managed to get it half done as they failed to bring enough insulation. Looks like they will be back later this week to finish up.

Friday I got a new side door built for the trailer. I also had to replace the wood at the bottom of the opening as it was quite rotten. So some new PT at the bottom of the opening and a new 3/4" OSB wood door with a welded up metal angle frame wrapped in tyvek will get it done. I still need to come up with a latch / lock and I plan to sheet the outside likely in metal that matches the building.
20141031_154210.jpg

20141031_154155.jpg

Sat am I finally pulled cat5 from the barn to the house and got the wifi going. So nice to finally have that working since my 4G signal hardly works inside the double wall metal building.

Sunday I started welding up the 7.5'x4' ramp for the trailer. Im planning to weld in the last cross piece and the metal mesh for the deck tonight (just picked it up yesterday)
20141102_133109.jpg

Tossed a couple sheets of 2" foam over the stairwell to keep the cold out. I have plans to make something nicer eventually (hinged, weighted door setup with better insulation) but for now it gets the job done.
20141102_161727.jpg

Also now have most of the PEX done. Yes, thats a LOT of shut off valves, but I like options.

Connections for the outdoor shower and silcock, as well as indoor H and C spigots for filling buckets, car washing, floor washing etc.
20141102_233200.jpg

Im running the PEX around the surface of the inner steel except where I had to go behind the stairs. Likely Ill fabricate some sort of guard to go over them eventually. These lines continue through all the "rooms" under the stairs over to where the boiler will be located.

Been a while since Ive had time to do much in the shop since Ive been trying to get everything ready for winter and I had to do a little maintenance on the wife's Audi.

20141112_005159.jpg

Finished up the ramp for the trailer. Still need to get it coated, but until spring its just going to have to wait.
20141104_232648.jpg

I finally got the trailer buttoned up enough for winter. Still working out what Im going to wrap the doors in so for now Tyvek will have to get it done. I had to replace a lot of the floor at the very back of it. Years of use and abuse cracked the aluminum floor right by the door and water got in and rotted the sub floor. 3 layers of PT 2x10s fixed that up.
20141123_140318.jpg

Added a deadbolt to the side door.
20141123_140235.jpg

And FINALLY got started on the boiler system. So far I have it mounted, the intake and exhaust done, and the copper for the floor side dry fit.
20141123_222130.jpg

20141123_222109.jpg

Today I need to pick up some more parts for the domestic side of the boiler. With any luck I should have it all plumbed up this week!

Nearly finished with the dry fit of the boiler plumbing. Just need to make some drains for the PRV's and the condensation drain etc. And of course the gas line. I also got the t-stat wired up and figured out the wiring. Just need to pick up a couple things for that along with the gas lines today.

20141125_224326.jpg

And a shot of the current state of the shop. I really need to pick up.....

Shop looks amazing.
I have a question. How did you make any cuts to the steel you used for the walls and ceiling? I was thinking about using a Metabo angle grinder with the thin cutting disc, but was worried the heat from the cut would burn the finish on the steel. Any thoughts?
Cheers, Keith.

They finally came back last wed and finished the blown-in insulation upstairs.

This weekend I connected the water to the house and finished up the sink drain so I now have running water, cold anyway. Managed to have zero leaks in the PEX.

I soldered up all the copper on the boiler and finished crimping the PEX and added the drains etc. What a pile of spaghetti. So far Ive only had one soldered joint leak and a handful of NPT joints. I taped the threaded joints (and from what Im reading likely used the wrong tape on the large size pipes) so Im going to pull them all apart tonight and use some good paste instead. Hopefully that will solve the issues.

Also tested the wiring. Everything is working as expected. I was surprised to see the floor is still at 46 degrees even after quite a few cold days and nights.

Anyway, this is basically the finished boiler setup.

I REALLY like your garage and property. Nice job. But I have to be candid...if I were your neighbors I would be very, very unhappy with that old semi trailer. To the point where I would try to do something about having it removed. I'm just sayin...not trying to create controversy.

It will be nicer once Im finished with it. Plus I really only have two neighbors that can see it. One loved it and wished she had a decent place to put one. The others, they really dont care either. Even if they did, its too bad as there is no regs regarding trailers in our town. :)

Fixed up all the leaks last week sometime.

Yesterday around 11am the propane guy showed up with two 100 gal tanks, got them installed and the boiler fired up by noon.

Around 9pm I finally had this.

20141211_210014.jpg

Then I spent some time starting to set up my "research" area. I will be mounting the monitor on the wall and hiding the cables but I still need a bracket.

is there a reason you didnt put in footings or a middle grade beam? or did i miss it in the pictures

It wasnt needed? Maybe Im misunderstanding your question.
-----------------------------------

Mounted the computer to the wall under the bench and moved the radio onto its side like it will be once I get the bench end panel done. Im going to see about getting the aluminum cut for that this week (and for the last section of the bench top) so I can finally finish mounting that up and remove the bucket. Still need to get the monitor mounted to the wall and feed the cables down through. I think the monitor mount is due today.

20141215_002723.jpg

FINALLY bought some shelves yesterday. Have most of my boxes unpacked and most of the little bins moved out from the garage. Naturally its filling up fast but I still have a bit of room left. If I run out I can fit another section of 5 shelves next to these. Its hard to see in the pic but I cut a piece of grey melamine out to mount between the shelf poles next to the bench. Figure if nothing else it separates things a bit and creates more "wall" space to hang stuff. Perhaps some shelves to store all the Dewalt batteries and chargers.

Nope. All of the posts of course have a small pad poured at the bottom of each hole. But typically pole barns (at least any that Ive seen around here) do not use a footing for the floor.

Thanks all.

Buddy dropped off some aluminum for me sat am. One piece for the bench end panel. I made a cutout for the radio but still need to add some mounting holes and get it powder coated. Im thinking red to match the HF boxes.

20141220_160136.jpg

I also got all the pieces for my welding table cut and started a little welding on the top.

20141220_153328.jpg

20141221_234519.jpg

And whipped up this frame for a butcher block top I scored for free from a guy at work for the wifey. I had to order more gussets to do the top 4 corners. Otherwise it just needs a couple holes drilled to mount the top and some paint. Then of course refinishing the top itself.

Got a decent amount of work done over the holiday break.

Finished up the welding table minus feet which are due tomorrow. I ended up borrowing my father in law's 220V Lincoln MIG. SOOOO much faster / easier than trying to TIG the whole thing together. I really need to get my own 220V MIG. Maybe next year.

20141229_133908.jpg

20141229_170148.jpg

Finished up the wiring in the fab area for an exhaust fan, more lights for over the welding table, and a ceiling mounted winch for getting the spare wheels up on the shelf under the stairs. Carrying big wheels up a ladder isn't too safe, nor fun.

And got a bit more steel up. They sent the wrong color Z trim for between the grey and white, and the last long panel for the knee wall was damaged in shipment. Replacements are due later this week.

20141231_135222.jpg

Installed the aluminum top on the last 6' of the workbench and mounted my vise (someday Ill find a nice vintage one to restore)

20141230_130415.jpg

20141230_130542.jpg

Made a mounting plate for the hot and cold water spigots under the cabinet. And I might have painted the hot knob red as they only had blue at Lowes.

20150102_163434.jpg

Dropped the bench end panel off friday to be powder coated. Ill likely grab that later this week.

Feet for the welding table showed up tuesday. I got them installed and managed to right the table with a little help from mr. engine hoist.

Currently in place. Still lots to set up and get organized etc.

I also need to trim the left end of the top, just waiting to borrow a friends plasma cutter.

Got the bench end panel back from powder on saturday. The color is a near perfect match to the HF boxes.

20150110_172839.jpg

Yesterday my father in law showed up with a free brake drum for me. Last night I welded the metal I picked up on friday to it and painted it up to use as a stand for my 12" disc sander. I really need to get a needle scaler. It took longer to hammer and chip all the crust off than it did to fabricate the rest of the stand. Ill def have one before I make another one of these. Still debating it I want to fill at least the tube with cement yet. We'll see if it "rings" when running first.

Got the sander mounted on the stand and finished (minus a few screws Im short) the metal on the half wall. STILL waiting on the correct color Z trim for the white / grey split.

However, I did get lucky and they sent me an extra 60 linear feet of the right color grey metal as supports for the two long sheets that were damaged during the last shipment. So I now have enough to finish the lower part of the north wall and the other side of the half wall for $0 and a little sweat equity cutting it up.

Been a slow few weeks. Ive been working a bunch of OT so I could buy the last $500 worth of metal to finish sheeting the inside. The order (minus the Fn white J trim showed up friday).

I did manage to sheet the side of the stairs with some 3/8 plywood I had left over from another project last week. Ill be painting the wood to match the metal.

This weekend I did what I could without the white J trim. Finished up the stairway wall since I can slip the J in after.

Did another 12' of the north wall, again will slip J in when it shows.

Finished up the outside of the half wall.

Yesterday I picked up a 6mo old 40" Husky box for $200. Should be good enough for the fab area stuff. Drill bits, tin snips, abrasive discs etc. Sold the old grey craftsman box for $50, so only a $150 upgrade. Not bad. Finally trimmed the extra top off of the welding table, box slips in just perfect.

If all goes well Ill be finishing up the steel on thrusday night.

Started painting all the exposed wood last night. Painting the underside of the stairs sucked. I still need to cut a narrow piece of plywood to finish up the little wall near the boiler system.

The rest of the wood along the stairs will be painted white to match the walls. Maybe Ill even mix up some dark blue and paint a little stripe between white and grey...

Not too exciting, but the grey is SO much nicer than bare wood.

(yes I still need to mount the PEX to the wall, but the paint was still wet)

Great progress this weekend. Managed a couple hours sat and sun.

Finished up the pretty much all the metal.

North wall done. Its amazing how much brighter the whole building is now that this wall is no longer insulation paper brown.
20150214_145305.jpg

Finished painting under the stairs above the rooms.
20150215_141730.jpg

East wall above rooms done.
20150215_141534.jpg

Painted the wood along the stairs late last night. (Also painted the little cabinet above the parts washer)
20150217_004447.jpg

Maybe later this week Ill get the last area under the stairs painted and the final piece of wood up in the corner by the boiler (and painted). Then Ill basically only have the windows left to trim out and the first floor should be "done".

Dan - can you tell us more about your wall hung boiler, what brand, how many btu's? Are you running glycol or don't you ever intend to not have heat out there, with the other plumbing that may be the case....
How is your system performing, its been running for a couple of months now. I don't recall seeing you install any type of heat for upstairs wood area, will you add later, was boiler sized for it? Thanks for any info you can offer.

The boiler is a Navien combi unit. Model number NCB180ASMENGLP http://us.navien.com/Product/Page1/Details/NCB-180?Category=NCB series The combo unit is nice as it does the floor heat plus the domestic hot water for the shop. If I recall the unit itself was ~$2300. Come summer it will provide hot water to the outdoor pool shower as well. :)

I decided not to run gylcol as I always intend to have it running and I didnt want to have to deal with testing yearly and changing out glycol/water mix.

So far it has been working flawlessly. The first month I used a bit more propane than I would have hoped due to the cold temperatures and my very leaky R19 insulated overhead doors. Since then I have tightened up the seals on the doors etc. I also set some temp limits for the slab so that if its very cold (which as you well know its been record lows in NY for the last couple months) it will only allow the floor to get to say 62 degrees instead of 70(or whatever the factory setting was) to keep the room temp at 57.

Ive also lowered the room air temp setting to 55. With all the construction work Ive been doing out there lately 55 is plenty warm when your feet are toasty. I find my self in a tshirt lots of times. I believe last month I used 75 gallons of propane or about $175. I dont think thats so bad to heat a 2000sqft space for a month with the below average temps and the crazy wind that we get at our place. Basically we have no wind break on our 5 acres or on the 12 acres to the west of us. Its pretty much the open tundra, heh.

As for the upstairs I have no plans yet to heat it. I will likely just do something separate (maybe an electric hanging blower type heater?) as I dont plan to spend a lot of time up there (at least not yet). So running another water loop up there really isnt an option. If it turns out in 5 or 10 years Im up there more I may think about heating it all winter.

Very cool shop. In addition to the boiler how much more was the manifold and lines for the radiant heat floor. Our shop now we only need to run the heat when it gets in the single digits. It usually stays around 50 in the winter. But im looking into options for the pole barn im about to build at my new house. 40x80. I plan on doing a loft with custom trusses like you did and use a through the wall unit to heat/cool upstairs. Half will be a 1 bedroom apartment and half will be storage.

The tubing and manifolds was ~$900 from Blueridge.

The install is super easy. My 8 yr old daughter helped me a ton on it.
