My shop/barn build thread and projects

Been a lurker here for a while on/off figured Id start with a thread about the shop I am currently putting up.

This has been going on for a while now but I just havent had time to put up pics etc. Anyway, here goes.

Specs:
40'x48'x12' pole barn construction
Full attic ~16.5'x44'x8' - designed to be additional shop space - likely for woodworking and storage - with walk-up stairs
Radiant floor heat
100A electrical
Water, etc.

I think Ill just toss up a handful of pics a day until we are caught up.

Looking good!
Seeing that open end of the loft... then the single framed window... sure makes one think it would be cool to let more of that unobstructed natural light in...

NOW I'm thinking about some sort of skylight panels along the roofline, too....

I know. I was saying that too how awesome it would be with two huge windows in front and back. Unfortunately there is only so much money to go around. I can always add something bigger in later.

nice barn

Thanks!

Looks good!
Just curious as why the sheathing under the metal roof?

Its VERY windy here. We decided it would make the building that much stronger and just "better" in general. It cost a bit more, but I think it was the right way to do it. Between that and the tyvek wrap its built more like a house than a barn.

It also keeps it from condensating and raining inside your building.

My father in law brought his Kubota up a couple weeks ago to dig another ditch for more conduit. This time for water and low voltage electric. We also had to dig up the original conduit meant for the electric service as it needed to be moved since the barn didnt end up exactly where we thought it might when we planned it 9 years ago.

2012-08-24+11_38_38.jpg

We also used the backhoe to help scrape out around the inside of the barn to install the R-10 foam insulation for the slab. That was a real treat. Even with the machine it was a ton of hand digging. The insulation goes down 24" on the north and west sides and 16" on the south and east (as measured from where the top of the slab will be).
2012-08-25+12_56_41.jpg

Then we backfilled it all and leveled out the dirt that was left inside.
2012-08-26+17_17_59.jpg

Since then Ive moved a bunch more dirt and rocks around. Next up I need to get a couple of loads of dirt in to backfill the north and west sides, tamp down all the dirt good and get ready for stone to be delivered. Im HOPING to get the stone in this week, but being a short week I have a feeling its going to be another week.

Also the 2100 feet of tubing for the radiant heat showed today. Wee.

I am looking into a pole barn around that size. Can you tell us what the building costs ballpark if someone builds it for you?

I also imagine concrete is more than the building?

Thanks in advance.

The tubing, manifolds, etc showed up this week for the radiant heat. I purchased everything from the Blue Ridge Company. They were great to deal with, the price was right and everything looks pretty nice as far as I can tell.

I also had 20 yards of dirt delivered to back fill along the outside of the north wall.

Great looking shop, Dan. Congrats and welcome to GJ.

That attic may just be big enough, but give it time, Space creates vacuum! Before you now it, that space will be too small...

BTW, what do you plan on using the shop for? You mentioned the attic may be fore woodworking. What about the downstairs?

BTW, If this is an upgrade from shop 1.0, then we will need photo documentation to see the upgrade ourselves

Mainly for working on car projects. Im basically a jack of all trades. I started off long ago doing custom stereo installs and since have moved into more performance stuff. I also weld, do sheetmetal work, wiring, etc etc. I have a few hotrod projects for "customers" lined up so this space will make that nice as well.

Here are a couple fairly recent pics of garage 1.0 which is currently just the 2 car attached garage. It will be awesome to finally get this building up and be able to park daily drivers in the attached garage. Im sure my wife will agree.

(By the looks of the pics they were taken during the middle of some project, so excuse the mess. I seem to be able to create an awesome mess in the matter of an hour or three)

Hi Dan,
Very nice barn, I like the proportions. In my novice opinion, those seem like pretty wide/long trusses considering it is an open 40ft span with no supports. I assume you get a lot of snow in Rochester as well. Can you tell me what the load rating is, how far apart they are spaced, and what the bottom part of the truss is (2x10?)?

I want to do a 30x48 and was thinking I would need a center beam for support.

Thanks,
Kevin

Kevin,

I dont have the truss sheets handy. However, I can tell you this right now. The trusses are spaced at 24" and have a 2x12 bottom chord. And yes, we get decent snow here, some years.

So I worked nearly all weekend but didnt seem to accomplish a ton. Lots of "figuring" and running around to get supplies etc.

Anyway, I managed to get the panel box mounted and the conduit all squared away. Installed two boxes for switches by the door and a 12" square box for network/phone/cable management and pull access. (the box under the window). The plywood panel around the box will be covered with white FRP and made removable for easier access to the box once the steel liner panels are hung.

I also made up a bracket to hold the elbows for the PEX (I couldnt stand it if they were just flopping around) and mounted the manifold.

This am they came to start leveling and compacting the floor and got a good start on the ramp in front. The plan is to finish tomorrow, then I can get working on the metal mesh and PEX install.

Tuesday they finished up leveling and compacting the barn area, finished up the grading for the driveway and spread my 20 yards of dirt down the north side for me (I need to grab a couple pics).

Tuesday night I hung some construction lights, laid down half of the 6mil vapor barrier and 500sq ft of mesh.

Wed night I had help. Three of us managed to get the rest of the vapor barrier and the other 1500sq ft of mesh down in about 90 mins. Then, after some careful double checking and measuring we laid down the first of 7 loops of tubing. It actually went a bit faster than I thought having never done it before. I still need to add a few more ties to it, but its basically set. Hoping to get the rest done in the next couple nights so I can pressure test this weekend.

First loop - hard to see in this pic, but there is a keep away zone for one lift post by the far end there.

I had them fax me a copy since Im waiting for a new good copy in the mail.

"Bottom chord live load (50.0psf) and additional bottom chord dead load (5.0psf) applied only to room 16-20"

So 50psf would be the magic number.

As promised a pic of the uncoiler. Nothing fancy, but I only spent about 5mins making it.

uncoiler.jpg

This is the turntable I used. I bought a pair of them years ago to make some turnplates for a car alignment setup, but never used them.

I might take a few mins to make it nicer so I can use it when I start wiring this place, and for future projects.

It took a bit longer than Id hoped, but all the tubing is down and connected to the manifold. Probably the worst part was twisting 1500+ wires with that stupid tool. I think next time Id just use zip ties.

I pressurized it yesterday afternoon around 4pm. As of 6pm tonight it hadnt dropped even a half a psi. In fact, it went up a touch due to the sun shining in on the tubing all afternoon.

Concrete is scheduled for first thing tuesday am. yay.

Tubing. Ill get some more pics, along with some overhead, tomorrow.
tubing+all+down.jpg

Manifolds. The extra pex to the left is for a slab temp sensor. I added a tube up front for one too. Im not sure Ill use it, but easier to put it in now!

How far down did you go with the foam board?
previously mentioned in post 16;
The insulation goes down 24" on the north and west sides and 16" on the south and east (as measured from where the top of the slab will be).

Snapped some pics with the Contour after work today. Using them to be sure I know right where everything is after the concrete goes in.
