They sealed and cut the floor today. Its still extremely dusty. I guess they are going to finish clean up tomorrow. They also brought in two loads of crushed stone to top off the driveway, still a load short. More pics tomorrow.

I used the leaf blower to blow a majority of the dust out today. Man it was everywhere. Then my daughter and I hosed it all down and squeegeed it out. Looks sooo much better. I also got the last little bit of concrete splatter off the trim.

They are coming in the am to measure for the stairs. Hopefully they dont take too long to make. Its a pain accessing the upstairs by ladder.

Didnt get a ton done on it this weekend. I spent most of the day saturday scoring some free cabinets, drawers, a table saw and dust collection system for the shop.

Yesterday I poured a step in front of the man door on the south side. I TOTALLY forgot to get this ready before they poured the garage floor so I had to put my mason hat on and do it myself.

I also drove in two ground rods for the electric service. Luckily I was able to borrow this guy to drive them in with. Worked like a champ, even in my super bony ground.

Ive been working on interior purlins this week. No pics to show for it yet.

Yesterday after work my daughter and I stared building a rolling bench. I figured if I built it now I could use it during construction and then have it for after as well.

It still needs some more cross bracing and the top and shelf but its coming together nicely. I tossed a scrap piece of osb on it last night and it worked out awesome. The work surface will be 3'x6' and its ~38" tall.

Lots happened today but I didnt get time for many pics.

The gutters were installed this am. Hopefully that will keep some of the mud off the side of the building until I get the stones done.

I ran the ground wire from the panel box to the ground rods, covered them up with soil and got a decent start on the stones down the south (yard) side. I got about 2x as far as the pic here shows.

2012-10-05+12_28_37.jpg

I also had a friend shear me a free piece of 3/16" diamond plate to use under the door as a kick plate. You can just make it out in the stones pic above. Ill get more tomorrow. (for the record I really dont like diamond plate, but it should hold up really well and it was $0)

After I got tired of digging up sod, setting bricks and shoveling stones I cut out the tops for the rolling workbench. They are just made from some 3/4" particle board with grey melamine (I believe) on both sides. I scored two sheets free from a friend of mine. The edging is a dark blue (looks much lighter in the pics) that I purchased from www.t-molding.com. Its pretty simple to install, just cut a 1/16" groove around the edge with the router and pound it in. Its a nice look for 50 cents or so per foot. I still need to attach the panels, but I need to collect the pocket drill jig from my dads first.

Saturday my daughter and I finished up the stones down the south, yard, side of the barn. I still need to back fill with dirt, but I think Im going to wait until spring so its not a mess of dirt all winter.

Also, we finally got a chance and enough guys to lift the 21' long stairs into place. So nice to be able to walk up now.

So Ive more or less hated the height of the windows ever since the floor went in. Unfortunately I didnt consider just how much the floor had to come up and we were getting ready for a vacation when they framed the windows in. Anyway, instead of bitching about it for the next 30 years or more I decided to bite the bullet and move them now, before I get too far finishing the inside.

Before:
2012-10-13+13_13_05.jpg

I had to order 8 new lower panels, a handful of 2x6s and a new roll of Vycor to wrap the windows with. So not a lot of expense but man what a lot of work.

Thursday after noon I started stripping the steel. This is how far I got before dark.

2012-10-25+18_38_04.jpg

Friday I got started around 9 and my father in law showed up around 10:30. By 7pm we had all the windows replaced, the upper steel trimmed and back on and all but 6 of the lower panels back on. I finished up the last of the lower panels sat am. We moved the windows up ~15 inches. So much better. Now I will be able to fit workbenches all along that wall without covering up part of the windows. The bottom of the windows are now ~45" above the floor.

All in all it took about 21 man hours and prob $200, but Im VERY happy with the results.

Here we are about half way:

Finished:

Ill snap a pic of the inside next time its acutally daylight out. Stupid storm.

Looks good, too bad about the windows but you were smart to do it now and have that usable bench space. I'm a bit suprised at no 2" insulation under slab that would be a big savings in cash if I could omit that. I'lll have to do some more research, where I live we have about 2 weeks of below freezing winter if that, pretty mild so that may work. Keep up the pic's.

So a while back I stumbled on a deal for some cheap laminate flooring for 29 cents / sqft. I bought just under 1k sqft to do the attic shop area of the barn and the other part of our basement someday. Since the upstairs of the barn will mostly be a wood shop, I wanted something that would be easy to clean up sawdust. This fit the bill.

I did most of the install over the week of Thanksgiving as I was off, and just finished it up last sat (I need to get some finished pics yet).

The wall is to create a storage area at the far end, its ~!6x16, leaving me with 32x16 for the shop area.

A few in progress pics:

Be careful with sawdust on that laminate floor. It can get pretty slippery.

When I was installing the laminate floor in my house, it was quite slippery from all the sawdust everywhere from trimming door jambs and floor planks.

Great shop Dan,
Love the upstairs space. Wish the city didn't stick me with such a low maximum height for my new barn (same size as yours)- couldn't do an upstairs.
Oh well,
Good job!

Lee I have them set to "private" so you can only see them if you have the links already. I have a friend that lives down in Warsaw, small world.

The window's look so much better above the lower coloring. They do seem kinda high to open and close though from where the fella is standing out side. I am guess it isn't so bad on the inside.

Still leaning over a bench to try to open and close them could be tough.

The inside is a bit taller. See where the door threshold is, thats the same height as the floor inside. Im 6'2" so I think Ill manage. Worst case Ill have to climb up on the bench to open them fully. It still beats them stuck behind a bench.

The top gravel is just a few inches. I think if you look back you can see they brought in almost a foot of bank run up by the overhead doors tapering out a ways. They tamped it all down when they did the area under the concrete. The cement trucks hardly made a mark, even in the rain. I was pretty impressed.

Picking up the wire to run from the house to the barn tomorrow. Turns out it was a lot cheaper than I originally suspected.

Hoping to have some very basic power running out there by the end of next weekend.

Two weekends ago I finally got real power ran. It was much easier than expected (I had thoughts of it getting stuck while pulling etc), but with help from a friend and my wife and daughter it went super smooth.

Last week I managed to start wiring some outlets and switches etc. Currently I just have two outlets working, but its coming along. (yes I need to sleeve the ground wire green, I just keep forgetting)

This weekend I framed up the little "rooms" in the rear of the barn, which the ceiling of will serve as a storage area. The first section in the corner will be for the floor heat system as well as the compressor. The second is for the parts washer, sink and fridge, the third is still "for rent" and the last little section under the stairs will be for the engine hoist, stand, jackstands, etc. Also started on some framing to partially close in the stairwell between the two posts shown in the second pic.
