I thought I’d share a couple of pictures of my shop built 8” grinder. There was a local self taught machinist / electrician who lived in our small town until he passed away a few years ago at the ripe age of 92. He built a few of these for local guys. He fabricated everything, including the arbor and it is smooth as silk, despite the ultra rough condition of the left stone. I was able to buy this a few years ago at an estate auction of a local fellow. I paid $90 bucks for the grinder and a parts washer that they threw in with it. I would’ve paid twice that though. I knew that I was coming home with that thing. It makes mower and bush hog blade sharpening a quick project. Anyway, I thought I’d share a bit about one of my favorite tools in the shop.

Folks of his generation, were resourceful and had the drive to produce what they needed with what they had. A lost talent to most today, nice, simple design, I'll guess a couple of pillow bearing blocks under the hood. I like the belt drive also.

Very nice score there....

Back when the local hospital got its first MRI machine, this guy was called up to figure out how to get it set up properly. I don’t think he graduated high school, but he was believed to be a genius.
My grandpa didn’t go to school past the 9th grade because he was needed on the farm, but he could put 2 wrecked crop dusters together and make 1 good one out of the carnage for his spray business. I admire the determination of folks like that.
