My Siding Is Turning Green!

A buddy stopped in the other day, said how come your house is turning green? I'm like wtf? He said go look. The north side of my house is starting to get a green tint on the siding. White aluminum siding. I'm guessing the cold wet weather we've been having, combined with the fact the sun never hits it...maybe some mold or algea?

What to do...any thoughts?

pressure wash it. There is some house cleaner stuff to use at home depot to clean it. It may actually be called house clean - don't remember

Go to Costco, get some "WET AND FORGET" spray it on with a weed sprayer and your done. No Powerwashing scrubing etc.
It will kill the green and keep it from comming back.

I got a product called "JoMax" from Home Depot that worked really quick and easy. I mixed it with a little water and sprayed my vinyl siding, waited about 15 minutes and then hosed it off with a garden hose (no pressure washer). It's been about 8 months so far, it all looks great. The mildew has yet to return but it's inevitible, when it does I'll use it again.

It's algae. It forms on the sides of houses that don't get direct sunlight. I just put a gallon of bleach in a 5 gallon bucket and fill it with water. Hook the siphon feed into the bucket and pressure wash using that solution.

Have you looked around to see if it's just reflecting the colours around it? In this case, perhaps the grass, tree's or shrubs?

Why would metal siding just turn green one day?

Not any surrounding reflections. Its above the front porch on the second story face of the house that it has a green tint. Under the porch roof the front of the house is still white. Maybe because it doesn't get rained on.

I can't explain it.

Bleach, water, and a drop of dish washing liquid.

Don't know what all those other products cost, but a gallon of bleach is less than $1.

Just be careful with getting bleach on your skin. Take a good soapy shower AS SOON AS YOU ARE DONE. Trust me on that one, bleach burns are not fun.

I heard that bleach will damage the seals of a pressure washer.
And make sure your plants are covered with some plastic and remove the plastic as soon as you are done

I went to the local Home Depot today to get some JoMax (as has been praised on this thread). They never heard of it and couldn't find it on their computer. I guess that's one drawback of living in "Hooterville". Guess I'll mix up some bleach / water / soap and give it a try with the pressure washer as I've always done.

Bleach and bleach based products are cheap and you see quick results but you pay for it later. 1. It leaches into soil. 2. It doesn't kill the entire growth (it takes the color out of the growth so it looks like its entirely gone) so it comes back quicker the next time because you left a food source for the spores that are floating around in the air. 3. It can eat the sheen off your siding making it look old.

doesnt work that way in Australia... its on the south side of the pole out front of my house...hehe
