We purchased our home with a single carport last spring, Right away I had plans of building a garage . And since the fall i've been working on this.

Its a 24x25 attatched. Nothing crazy but some nice details. Im working on getting the radiant heat hooked up right now and then I'll be adding some wall cabinets and tool storage soon.

I had the framing, sheathing and foundation done by contractors, rest I did myself self with the help of my wife. Took longer and costed more then I expected but Im beyond happy.

Let me know if anyone has any questions .

Enjoy and thanks Garage journal for all the inspiration and help

Sorry guys no crazy toy hod rod pictures, sold my fbody and CTS-V before the home purchase and now I just purchased a 2013 tacoma a few weeks ago :bounce:

Very nice, I love the colors, very similar to what I want to do in mine. I am considering a few shades darker on the bottom though, however, I am afraid of darkening the garage.

Re: My single car port to 2 car garage transformation.

i'm glad i ran across this.
it was wierd following the build backwards.

a few more comments:
1. the final product looks great (nice add to the house + architecturally pleasing)
2. i've never thought about rad. floors in a garage, good idea.
3. do you have a guess to how much it was to purchase the siding?

I Dont remeber the exact cost , but its about $ 135 pr 100sqft at 14" overlay I have 12" , and alot goes to waiste on cuts and angled . It was alot more then I anticipated . A friend of mine in the siding business said it would have costed me the same in material to vinyl my hole house as it did to do grade a red cedar shakes on my garage .
But I really like the look of the shakes .

Re: My single car port to 2 car garage transformation.

Great transformation from just single carport to full-size 2 car garage. The radiant floor is definitely best feature since you're in cold climate of CT.

Love how well you've integrated the new with old. It looks like it was always a 2 car garage - - - Well Done! Those cedar shakes will last forever, especially since you've painted them.

Your nice big lot sure made the process easier. What is your overall lot size as looks like your property opens up to the left side? Love the big trees. If you outgrow the attached garage, could you build a detached out back?

Since you had such open space behind garage, did you consider making the garage oversize going back? You could have put false roof on part of old garage and rafters going opposite way on the new part - - ie peak with two valleys. That way your garage could be a deep 2 car like say 24' x 32 ft.

Finally, if it were mine I'd done a lot more electrical with a 220v outlet for say compressor/welder/etc in future, and more outlets. Also looks like light switch is on wrong side of door as you go into the house?

Overall, great transformation . .. as couldn't imagine living with just single carport in cold CT winters. Well done!

Haha the light switch is on the wrong side , there was a switch there and I took the lazy route and made that work the 8 outside lights .
But its no big deal since the two center lights run off the 3800 opener motion sensors . I only use the other 8 switched lights when I'm working on something .

I realy couldn't go bigger due to a nice paver patio I have in the rear , and I had to keep the costs as low as possible since the budget for the build was so tight . Carrying over the existing car port was the cheapest route .

As far as electrical , I have a dedicated 20 amp for my compressor , and a dedicated 20a for my little 110 welder . If I need more down the road it won't be to difficult since its attached .

Due to zoning I dout I can do another shop in the back , but I have a nice 15x12 shed for all of my outdoor goodies plus a basement for other misc storage .

My next big garage project will be a workbench , but I've got some other work inside the house I need to take care of first .

Nice work on the build, it turned out fantastic! I'm sure you are loving an indoor space now. I wish I had the opportunity to do a radiant heat floor when our house was being built.

By chance, did you use to frequent the Maxima boards with the same handle?

The space looks great. Do you have any plans to paint the floor? This would be a good time to do it.

Thanks guys
The floor is coated with wetlook sealer. Im pretty happy with it, might do another coat at some point to give it alittle more gloss. The high cost of epoxy just wasnt justifiable to me.

The lights are 5" recessed halo's , two are controlled by the garage door openers other 8 are on a switch.

Just to update, Here are some little things I've done since my last post .

Air tool rack made out of some 1/4" plumbing fittings and HF quick connects

Shoe rack

My parents had a desktop computer sitting around not being used, so I grabbed it. I often find my self needing to look stuff up when working on project. Much better to use this then a phone .

(excuse the mess i'm in the process of doing some stereo upgrades on my truck )

Plans on deck : 4 more recessed lights, I need to really upgrade my tools, I want a retractable light kind of like my craftsman retractable cord , a vise, and more craftsman wall cabinets. O and more tools lol

A retractable light? I think I could use one of those. Do you have your eye on a particular one? Things are looking good. Very good.

Thanks. Yes , I like the craftsman one similar to my retractable cord but its not LED . I think I might spend a few extra bucks on the snap on .

I'm also debating on buying one or 2 chargeable wireless work lights, But Im afraid the thing will be dead every time I need to use it since i always seem to forget to charge things...

I am curious as to why you chose to stack so many 2x4s under the tool box instead of suspending it from the top or putting it on it's own platform? Seems like you have now limited the usability of that space to the right of the tool box?

Otherwise looks great! I like your air tool hanger and the hardwood floor around the entrance to the house idea. I might steal that as I have a bunch of leftover hardwood flooring that I need to do something with.

Good location on the fire extinguisher. If a fire starts you would naturaly run for the door & thats where the extinguisher is!

I loved having an old laptop permanent in my last garage. Not only to look up parts when needed but also ran Pandora while I was out there. Plus, if I ever had a question on a bike or vehicle I was working on, all my forums were a click away. New garage will definitely have a computer in it.

what program did you use for the drawing, and what lights are on the outside above the doors?

Google sketchup, its free easy to use. Watch a few youtube tutorial vids to get started.

The lights are down lights from ebay, Ive recently upgraded to another type from amazon. Just cause one of the lights burn out and these have better tabs for securing them .

They are also just a tad bit brighter. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ABYX38Q/?tag=atomicindus08-20

So it's been a while since I posted, not much has changed but I did trade the cobra for a more family friendly car.

Projects for this summer will be more lighting. And I'm unhappy with the clear floor sealant. It's yellowing, and peeling too.

I'd debating between a nice bright red, or the standard gray. But I'm leaning towards the red.

What do you guys think ?

Love your shop. Nice layout and colors.

One suggestion; it looks as if your door windows are at risk of being broken if the door opens too wide, too quick, as in strong wind, rambunctious kids, etc.
Consider a bumper or restraint or hydraulic closer to decrease having to buy new windows.

Nice job, please keep posting.
