Some vintage Thorsen goodness.

I picked up this 1/4" socket set recently. I thought it was interesting for the box to be finished in crinkle red instead of green. The smallest sockets in this set also caught my eye because I haven't seen these tapered style sockets in any of the 1/4" sets before. The tapered sockets are all marked with X suffix model numbers.
Beautiful Thorsen set.
Are those square drive sockets in the set too? What is that about? Was that common back in the day?
Thank you.
James

Really digging all the different Ward's sets..

Beautiful Thorsen set.

Square nut sockets were still pretty common in sets from the 50s and 60s and for some manufacturers even later.

Some armstrong armaloy stuff from I think late forties

Nice looking Armstrong set..

Thanks crtdi. I suspect you have collected some armstrong stuff as well. Here is my 10nd set with the correct socket you sent. Lmk if you are missing any, as I seem to have extras of all other sizes!

Your welcome.... I was a bit worried that I sent you the wrong size socket. Glad to see that worked out.

Vintage Armstrong stuff doesn't seem to come around very often, but I do have a set.

Not really sure of the vintage. My guess...late '50s perhaps?

These older Armstrong ratchets seem to be really nice. Butter smooth action.

There is another later vintage ratchet in this set that has a rather strange spline type of socket and universal pinned to the drive lug. Surely this is designed for some very specific task.

I really don't know, it's permanently pinned to the drive lug. I've seen pics of this set-up on other ratchets as well.

Here is a nice oxwall usa metric set. Missing the 13mm, but has a bonus 14mm!

How U doin’?

Couldn’t resist this set. Came with the extra breaker bar that has no markings whatsoever. The bar is clearly Plomb-like and a near twin to the Craftsman.

I’ll be on the lookout for a t handle and the mythical cross bar.

I virtually never see circle U 1/4" drive tools. I was interested to see if your set had a 3/8" 8 point socket because Plomb never offered one in 1/4" drive. It seems that your set probably has 1/4" and 5/16" 8 pointers, as far as I can see.

My Small But Growing 1/4" drive Socket Set Collection

I have a near mint, late 1990s Harbor Freight set, I actually opened the plastic wrap to use it a few weeks ago. It is back when they made some halfway decent sets, the sockets were great, but the ratchets were a bit crappy.

That whole U circle set is mythical to me. Awesome....

This is the God-forsaken thread that started my rabid fascination with collecting hand tools (and I'm loving every minute of it). I probably spend more time on this thread than any others as the stuff here is absolutely amazing. I'm finally able to offer up a bit of my own stuff.

16pc Craftsman set from the 42 catalog plus the screwdriver tip as I've found no other place for the screwdriver tip to live. I got the box empty and pieced together the contents. Unfortunately it's currently a mix of Circle H and BE, something I'll try to amend as I go.

Circle U set, missing a few sockets.

Side note: Would somebody please explain to me how to get my pics to post large within the text? Much more enjoyable to view than just the thumbnails. Thanks.

I believe this is my favorite 1/4" set so far. The sockets are unique in that they use a "-" instead of a "/" in the fractional markings. Only Craftsman BE or Circle H stuff I've seen that on.

Craftsman BE set that's missing the elusive cross bar. All the pieces to this have enough of their BLO coating still intact that I plan on leaving it alone.

Nice set. I like the flex spinner. That box is larger than mine. Mine was probably a more basic set. The earlier New Britain tools used the dash rather than the slash as I recall.
-Don
Edit. I like the unusual set holder too!IMG_4228.jpgFA89A7AF-0692-435D-98D7-71A1CC229160.jpg

Finally a C-series set. This thing was in incredible condition when found. I think the abandoned mud dauber village the case was packed with did a lot to preserve the chrome. There's an interesting styling flair on the hinges.

Nice stuff! Love the tool holder on that BE set. Mine has the/, no dash so I guess a later version. Still some blo on a few of the sockets. No crossbar either, I am beginning to wonder if they all came with them!

This page has become quite the display of Craftsman!

JoCo- your U set is more complete than mine. I’m not so sure it had more than the 8 sockets, based off a couple other examples I see on the web.

I like the screw down kits. I have one in 3/8.

Hazet 852 metric set. I normally don't like to post obvious incomplete sets, but I'm having a devil of a time trying to find the finishing pieces.

So...if anybody can help me out with a nice model 866 amber/yellow handled spinner and a model 850-9, 9mm socket in the correct style, please send me a PM.

Here are some early NB sockets similarly marked along with some early 3/8” drive BE Craftsman sockets with the dash.

Thanks, I've already seen the spinner offered on Ebay. It's a little too crusty for me. I know I'm being a picky, but I'll try to hold out for a nice one.
