My Snap-On CT7850 after two years.

I bought my CT7850 new on 8/29/12 and from the start I've not been overly impressed with it. The microprocessor delay is annoying and I regularly run into things it just won't take loose. The only thing it's really good for is tire and wheel work, or parking lot and road jobs. Well now one battery has completely **** the bed and the other won't go all the way through a tire rotation. The impact seems to be like it's always been, unimpressive but fully functional.

Seems like my choices are:

A. Choke up on the bat and buy two new batteries then move on with life.

B. Trade toward a new redesigned CT8850 impact set.

C. Switch to another cordless platform completely such as Ingersoll or Milwaukee.

I'm open to ideas.

I went through the exact same issue last year. I also had the same feelings. There was a time when SO was the only game in town on the impacts, that's how I got started on them. When SO batteries **** out, I couldn't justify the replacement cost vs. switching brands.

I ended up switching everything ( drill, saw, screw gun, impact ) to Milwaukee for a fraction of the money. I did not replace my 1/2 inch gun though, only the 3/8 gun. That little 3/8 gun is all I need. Very happy with the choice. Maybe someone else can say something about 1/2 guns.

Any consideration to having the 2 batteries rebuilt? And buy yourself a little more time?

Bummer. You already aren't thrilled, so I'd look at something else solely based on battery cost.

Ebay that sucker you have now, someone will bite on a bare tool.

Cut your losses and buy the M18 Fuel line of tools; you won't be disappointed.
Very long battery warranty also.

Find out what trade will be, tell him if it's not good you will be buying one elsewhere. I find most of the time this brings the deal to your advantage. If it still doesn't work out put it on the bay with the info you have and it still might bring more money than you think. Then move forward with your next gun of choice.

What kind of work do you do that it doesn't get the job done? I do mainly automotive and my old CT4850 has done me well but the NiMH are completely shot now. The only thing I've never tried it on was crank pulleys but everything else I had access to, I was able to remove just fine.

I went from a SO 4850 to the Milwaukee. Best move I ever made. The SO truck offered me $300 trade towards the 7850 but that was the same price as the way more powerful M18 so I jumped. Worst part of buying the M18 is fighting the urge to buy more M18 tools. I have lost that battle!

Not to start a sh*t storm I like my SO hand tools thats for sure, but there are tools I just would not buy from SO such as air tools or battery powered tool. They offer no advantage what so ever especially in the cost department. Sell them off and like other have said go with Milwaukee.

I have Milwaukee and ingersoll and also use snap on at work. If you're looking to use it in a shop environment only, go ingersoll. If it's home use and occasional shop use go Milwaukee. If you want disappointment go snap on.

I had all snapon. Battery impact and a drill. Still have the 14.4v drill. But gave my dad the impact. Because it would still work great for him. But I'd lose the battery too fast at work.

Switched up to the Ingersoll Rand IQV20 have the 1/2, 3/8, and 3/8 right angle impacts. Love the hell out of them. They're some powerful suckers. Put Snapon to shame and can be had quite a bit cheaper.

If the CT8850 still has the delay then screw it. Not even worth the time dealing with that delay. I could never get use to it. If I press the trigger, it's because I want power NOW, not later!

Have the old ct 4850, which when I bought it was pretty much the only game in town for a 1/2" cordless impact. Its plenty powerfull but very bulky for what it is. Milwaukee is what Im going to switch too.

I would absolutely abandon ship and get the milwaukee fuel. I will also admit like gsingh, I too am a snap on fanboy but the availability and performance of the new milwaukee tools is plenty reason to switch, not to mention price difference.

I'm a full time light truck and auto tech but where I work I do most of the transmission, transfer case and differential work along with whatever else is on the ticket except for alignments, diesel and light body; we have guys that do just those. Once you start adding extensions and wobble sockets doing this type of work I routinely run into things it won't break loose. Out comes the IR 2235timax. I pretty much use it only for tire work and working away from air. I'd use it more if it was more capable.

I just made the switch from Snap On 14.4 set up to the Milwaukee M12. I can't speak on the big 1/2, the M12 fuel is as good as the SO 14.4v in 3/8 drive impact that is rated for more torque, me personally, if I need more power I get a air impact but I do understand why people want all cordless.

Snap On cordless is not worth the premium over Milwaukee.

Also I has my 3/8 M12 ratchet for 1.5 years and it wouldn't turn a bolt anymore, I took it to the local Milwaukee place with no paperwork, they sent it out for warranty, 1 week later I have my rebuilt ratchet.

5 years on the tool and 3 on the M18 batteries is hard to beat. I thinks the high cap M12 batteries are 3 years.

Well you have an 8810 correct? So all you actually need is a bare 8850. If your dealer will give you trade in value for your old set it may be the cheapest way to go. If you want more batteries buy them on ebay. They seem to run roughly $100.

I have both, haven't actually done any testing yet but I agree they're similar. I can say from playing with both separately the Milwaukee is noticeably louder under impact load which is bad because the Snap-On is loud enough. I do like the 2 modes the Milwaukee has though.

This is one of the most sickening things about Snap-On. Their 18V tools list for $600-$800 just for a 1 tool and 2 batteries then they have the gall to say 1 year warranty? That's just insane.

Here's an update. My Snap-On dealer stopped by today and I told him about my problem and I laid out my choices including looking into other brands for cordless. I didn't know this but he told me that on these impacts the tool warranty is one year and the battery warranty is TWO year which still puts mine out of warranty by a little over two months.

This is when he told me he didn't want to lose my cordless tool business over this and would either GIVE me TWO new upgraded 4.0 amp hour batteries or would take my old CT7850 set in as is in trade plus $250 cash difference on a new 600 ft lb CT8850 set in the color of my choice. I think he is being way beyond fair and I feel like he's really doing what it takes to take care of me, which he always has. I think the trade offer is very strong.

Now the waters are muddied a little, so my choices now are:

Take the two new upgraded 4.0 amp hour batteries and keep on truckin'

Upgrade to the new stronger lithium impact set with the new improved capacity batteries

Continue looking into other platforms keeping in mind I like all my cordless one brand and type so all my tools, batteries and chargers interchange. So I would have to get not only a 1/2" impact but a 3/8" impact, drill and flashlight.

Everybody still feel the same?

I would take the snap on due to his willingness to fix the situation. That goes a long way with me. But if what you owed in the new tool equaled out to a brand new IR W7150 or something I'd skip it.

I have not used the snap on.......but I have the milwalkee m18 fuel........while I like it.......I kinda went back to my air gun. I dont run into much the m18 couldnt do......but I doubt it has 600lbs ft. It sounds like the snap on guy is giving you a good deal. You cant find an m18 kit for even close to that.

Resetting the clock, so to speak, and warranty while simultaneously upgrading for $250+ trade seems like a pretty nice deal. If you're on the fence see if he has a loaner 8850 to use for a week and see if you like it better (improved trigger delay, more power etc..)

If they got rid of the delay, increased the power and upgraded the battery capacity I'll probably go with the trade to a new CT8850.
