my snap on tool box

I wouldn't call it a restoration but i'm in the process of cleaning up my dads old tool box that was passed down to me. it had/has a bunch of over spray on it. I pulled the top drawers last night and was going to clean and oil the slides. What is the best kind of lube for this? and has anyone ever put ball bearing slides in one of these? i know it would be a lot of work but would be worth it to me since the box size is perfect for me right now and it has sentimental value as well

Scooter: starting a thread asking about fixing a toolbox might get missed especially with one small picture. can you post up more pictures of your tool box so the members that can help you can see which one you have?

there should also be a few threads showing guys taking apart their snap on boxes so you might want to do a little searching because this subject has been talked about a lot.

I clean drawer slides with a rag and whatever else it takes (toothbrush, solvent, etc). I reassemble dry and find the best lube is a clean slide...oil collects dirt which makes compound slides sticky. I found that to be true when I lived in Michigan and even more so now that I live in Arizona.

sorry it seems i always put my threads in the wrong spot and tick someone off in the process. i was bored last night and just started tearing it apart and wanted a quick answer so i could put it back together
that picture was supposed to be a lot taller and higher quality

Scooter: you by no means ticked me or anybody off. i was just mentioning that if you put in more pictures it might be easier for others to help. also putting it on a thread where you have a lot of members checking regularly sometimes is a better way to get an answer. we all have to learn the ropes and even if you were on other forums before they are all a bit different from my experience.

looks like a great toolbox. if you do clean up the slides and continue to use them door ease or bees wax is the best way to keep them working that i know of. even if you upgrade to better slides it still might help to have a little to keep things moving.

Nice KR537, thoroughly clean the slides and use a dry wax lube. Door Ease is a common one. As for putting ball bearing slides in, yes it is possible, but not very practical. It will be a ton of work for what little you gain. The only drawer that might be a candidate is if the slide channels on the bottom drawer are worn out. Till then, use it as designed.
