Hi all. Been on the H.A.M.B for a few months and thought I'd register here to get some ideas on making my garage neater and more efficient. Here's a few photos of my "A" Style steel garage. Two friends and myself built it in 5 days. I chose a steel bulding due to their low cost and ease to assemble. The high ceiling without cross beams means I could install a hoist at some point. The garage measures 20X32. I have insulated it with spray in foam insulation and framed around the inside to allow use of standard wiring instead of conduit and to also allow me to install wallboard (or something similar). Heat is natural gas radiant using a Schwank 20 footer. I also roughed in TV cable and a phone line. I got a good deal on this garage as I was in touch with the mfgr and they had a garage that was custom ordered and the buyer backed out of the deal. They had his deposit and I saved 3 grand. They shipped it for free. BTW, I used Futuresteel near Toronto, Ontario..

Framing it out is a great idea. You could use wallboard, pegboard, slatwall, or any combination to finish it. There's probably something else you could use I'm not thinking of. Anyway, it really looks great so far.

I am building my own "A" style I got from Steel Masters. Mine is 30X30 and it is still a work in progress. How much did it cost you for the spray on foam insulation?

The spray insulation was expensive. I believe it was about $3200.

Don't for a minute believe the "buyer canceled order and lost his deposit" scheme. That is an old hat in the steel building marketing business. Very common with your type of building. I've heard it dozens of times from people and from dealers when I was looking at buildings a few years back. Not to say you didn't get a good deal, just that the buyer backed out scam is used to make you think you are getting a great deal.

Nice building, but you sure are loosing a lot of space framing on the inside, and you really don't have alot to lose.

Nice Building.

I too looked into the spray foam for my steel bldg and found it too expensive. I only needed it for the heat though and not cold so it wasnt quite as mandatory as it is for you.

Again, nice job, I like the framing.

I am looking at keeping out the moisture. To keep the insides cool I am going to have 42 in. concrete pipe run from the back (see photo) to the back of my land, about 75 ft. and put my large shop fan in front to draw in air from the pipe that has been cooled by the ground. Also I can use it as a shelter during bad weather.

Has anyone looked at this site for Foam ?

What's the average price of a shop like this.. just talking the shell. I take it that they're cheaper than a regular pole build or steel building? Can I get an idea of price range?

Thx.

I got mine for just at $6,300 shipped. That is just the building no end walls and not the concrete or block work. It was a pain in the A$$ to put up, I only had OLD men and one woman to help but once I got a lift it went better. Still it took a week of work after hours and on the week end to get it up. 2,860 bolts to put it together. A whole lot of screwing going on and no satisfaction.

I framed and insulated my garage, and while i have a little more to work with, a finished wall is a joy. Easy to decorate, cheaper to cool and heat and night and day overall appearance.

Nice garage!
