Well, I recently discovered the wonderment of building a UDS, and considering I already had most of the stuff I needed I went ahead and built one. Other then the 3" Hole Saw and 1/4" Pop Rivet Gun I bought to work on this project, I spent a whopping $8 on material.

Cool! Can you post some more details or photos? I've got a couple drums I'd like to make into these for gifts. Thanks.

That looks like a removable lid drum. Can I convert a closed drum for this purpose I should I try and trade the ones I have out?

you can convert a closed drum by cutting off the top but the open top would be easier and cleaner. i beleive a weber kettle lid fits these drums well so you can raise the food grate and cook larger items

Looks great I got some parts coming together for my own uds.

Not to send people to another forum or anything but check out smoked-meat.com they have a uds section and lots of ideas.

I love mine. Use it often. had to customize it drastically, but why stay with a stock unit. Everything needs to be customized and made better.

Basically you just need to make some sort of coal basket and pop some holes in the bottom of the barrel to adjust temperature and put some supports towards the top to hold your grate. Most people, including myself use a Weber kettle grate.

Here you can see my coal basket in the bottom (a piece of culvert and some expanded metal) most people use all expanded metal to create their coal basket, but I don't weld--so I had to come up with a weld-free design.

You can use a closed drum, but I would suggest using a Weber kettle lid in lieu of the piece you cut off. Unless you can weld, I don't see a very good way to create a good seal at the top.

Yep--and also if you use a Weber kettle lid you actually create enough space to have two grates inside of the drum for double the cooking space.

Just wondering what was in the drum and how did you clean it out ?

To be honest, I'm not sure what was in the drum. It had a white lining though--I've read the red lining is terrible to deal with.

This is how I cleaned it out. (Video)

What is a "UDS" some sort of bbq grille/smoker?

UDS stands for Ugly Drum Smoker--and yes, it's a smoker. You could use it as a Kettle type grill as well though.

I made a few bbq's with drums before but allways burned them out really good. Any one ever think that metal might be slightly porous and oil or what ever was in there might leach out over time ? I never really worried about it but i was just wondering if it is possible

Well, I'm doing my first brisket today. I've had it on since about 7 this morning--just waiting for the race to start!

Didn't turn out too bad for my first time. My family was impressed and I also made a pretty good sauce to go with it.

Turner Biodiesel

Another advantage is that it raises the top grate and keeps it further away from the fire.

Of course, there are some modifications needed to make it fit. But it's a snug seal, no draft or air leakage. I have a tutorial on the mods if you wan them, send me a PM with your email address.

Reading comprehension & you.

you do realize that the thread he linked is nearly 600 pages right? going through that to find the link he was so kind to provide for the steel cone would take forever.

i have all the parts i need...except for a food drum, gotta make a few calls to some local companies that i know use tons of them and see if i can get one cheap..ish

That cone is nice but 55 dollars buys lots of weber kettles to pillage for grates and lids.

The inner cheap *** in me wishes it was closer to 20, I'd have one ordered for that.
