As the title says, this is what is in my box so Farr. I'm currently attending mmi (motorcycle mechanics institute) in phoenix, az. As time goes by im picking up whatever tools I can so I have a nice set by the time I'm looking for a job in the motorcycle field. I have a set of craftsman wrenches metric and stadard but I'm looking into a nice set of sk professional wrenches. I'm not one to be stuck on a certain brand. If it has a lifetime warranty and it's a quality product I'm going to use it. Currently I'm looking into another socket set with a few different ratchets in mind. Any thoughts on what is best? I have a long ways to go before my set is somewhat "complete". Anyways, here is what I have.

Kobalt USA ratchets and sockets
Craftsman USA 1/4 and 3/4 ratchets along with 1/2 craftsman usa sockets
Kobalt USA 1/2 ratchet
Mac ratcheting wrenches
Craftsman USA 1/8-3/4 wrench set and 8mm-16mm wrench set
Koblat crows foot set
Kobalt USA 1/4 rachet and socket set
Husky USA ALLEN wrenches
Channellock pliers

I have a few more things here and there. I'm waiting on a pair of sk pliers, should have those monday. Need a lot more, going to school and working part time makes it a little longer of a process but we'll get it done.
Here are some pics.

For combo wrenches I would get wright grip, I don't own any, but they have been compared to snap on flank drive+ and held up great. A set is only $200 ish for either sae or metric, alot cheaper then snappy.

For ratchets harbor freight as alot of nice ones, they new pittsburg pro flex heads have gotten a lot of praise here, the composites are nice as well, I have a 1/4 drive version and I like it alot. Plus they dirt cheap.

With sockets as long as you don't have ones from the dollar store than you are probably fine. I have a ton of different socket brands, proto, proto challenger, proto blackhawk,90's taiwan no names, snap on,stanley, husky,sk,blue point, allen, carlyle, and a bunch of other stuff I cannot remember. Once you jump the hurdle of really really cheap stuff made of pot metal then you should be fine as they are 6 point. The finish and wall thickness varies but they all turn bolts the same. If you want new then I suggest proto blackhawk if you can find them cheap, I got a incomplete set of blackhawk stuff from my tool guy for $3, the chrome and finish on them are pretty nice, previous guy musta stored them in water though, had a bunch of rust on the insides of the sockets but they cleaned up fine.

Also nice box, I got one of those husky ones and I like it alot, not sure what I am going to do with it though.

One thing I don't like about Wrights is that they aren't long pattern...

I was debating on a craftsman 3 drawer or this husky 3 drawer, that small tray is what sold the box for me. it's a great little travel box. I have a nice 6 drawer ball bearing craftsman box back in pennsylvania where I'm from, didn't want to bring that to school with me. I also have a nice 5 drawer U.S. general roller box from harbor freight. It is built really well, nice and smooth ball bearing drawers. I highly recommend it, you can find coupons to go towards it. It is a $400 box I picked it up for $109 with a coupon.

Craftsman used to have 2, 3 and 4 drawer sets with the cantilevered tray.

I think it was about a month after I bought mine I saw a Craftsman one with a tray online but it was to late. Then after I found out how short of space I was I wished I would have gotten the 4 drawer but that's all in the past. I took one class and got hired at Firestone in 2013. Worked there for little over a year. As it turned out I got my mechanics itch out of my system and I'm back to driving a truck. Boy it sure was hard standing up for 8 hours when you're my age with bad knees and feet.

Nice start. If you are working on bikes look in to some T-Handles. Also, Suspension tools are pretty useful in that field. Fork seal drivers, and forlk fluid level tools. There are a lot of specialized tools for suspension made by Race Tech and Motion Pro that are relatively inexpensive and make jobs much easier.

Another thing to consider is Allen head sockets if you work on KTM's. The Austrians love Allen head fastners. I rode KTM's for many years. It always bugged me when they got caked with dirt.

Very nice set. I had the Craftsman version of that box when I started out. I put a divider in that top fold up tray and used it for my short sockets..... Oh and I added a plexiglass piece to the inside cover with pics.

Been wrenching on bikes, for a living and personal for more than 38 years.. Have a look at the "new tool thread" you'll see Im still buying tools..... LOL it never stops.

Sometimes a new tool, sometimes a replacement tool for worn out or lost, sometimes a replacement for better, faster more efficient.

For wrenches and sockets im a believer in SO flank drive...in wrenches you'll find great use in the short and standard lengths ,, not much call for long pattern.

1/4 and 3/8 drive ratchets and sockets will do 99% of motorcycling needs, then a 1/2 breaker bar, Tq wrench (look at precision instruments) and a few sockets that fit specific needs.

Cruise ebay and the Snap on FB pages for deal on good used Snap on sockets and wrenches, 50% or truck cost is common

I would say you won't use that much when working on motorcycles, but its worth hanging on to in case.

I would go with Snap-On over SK for your wrenches also. Look into the 50% discount.

Do MMI students get the discount from Snap On/Mac/Matco/Cornwell?

Yeah we do, there is a snap on guy on campus Monday Wednesday and Friday I think. I was just at grainger the other day, I ordered a pair of pliers, had my mmi work shirt on and they gave me a discount too. It's pretty cool, I'm not sure how big discounts are with all the different brands. It's all still pricy, I look into used tools a lot.

What do you guys think of open end wrenches?

Those are your grandfathers wrenches. Used in a time when things were accessible and larger. Most OE wrench I've seen have shorter handles than today's combo wrenches. I've never worked on bikes, but had a few roommates that had some. Seems like most needed were hex sockets, and six point (1/4, 3/8) sockets for chrome fasteners.

I would suggest looking at the Silver Eagle bit socket set. I have craftsman USA bit sockets, and I wish I would of bought the silver eagle. As it comes with Long Reach Bit sockets. I think its the same used by Matco just at a different price.

They are to be avoided like the plague. No really, they are pretty useless.

You are almost correct but there are a few times (not many) when you get a tight space and a box end won't get in there.

Not to mention the times when I have a bolt with head & nut same size one wrench is the box and one is the open end. No room for socket sometimes.

Agreed that open end wrenches are 1 step above a crescent wrench and should only be used as a last resort.
Other items you might consider are 1/4 drive metric flex sockets. I have the SK 1337 from Amazon http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0002NYCAO/?tag=atomicindus08-20

I also have the 3/8 drive metric flex sockets but use the 1/4" drive set much more often.

Another good set to have is the Bondhus 43298 4 set of Hex bit sockets. Great fitment, won't break the bank and a great warranty. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002SW9OA0/?tag=atomicindus08-20

I'm not sure what you mean. What I meant was open end wrenches with both ends open - not combination end wrenches which are the standard wrenches in most toolboxes.http://www.gearwrench.com/MagentoSh...d6e5fb8d27136e95/G/W/GW_81805_FRNT_MAIN_4.jpg
