Decide to show off my twin HF 44 workbench, The vise is a old Wilton shop king I stripped and waiting to find the matching paint to the HF boxes. Top is 3/4 inch plywood with 2x4 layed on the flat. Its kinda a floating top its just resting on top of the boxes by can be slightly lifted to roll boxes out for any reason. Its has 4 in deck screws into studs behind it. I havnt decides on color of top. I usually panit all wood in garage white but I might do black,or a hard board top like my other bench. I right now digging the wood top hell im might sand it and poly it. Hope you guys enjoyed.

I wouldn't paint the top black, parts just seem to chamelon themselves on a black top and take forever to find.

Looks good. Any thought to custom bend some stainless steel sheet metal to cover the wood?

I think black is out. My other bench is white but got dirty real real quick so laid some hardboard down on top of it I had laying around plus didnt show burns from welder. I use this area as work bench also but keeping it as my "clean bench" cause i use it for computer/desk area too. Stainless doesnt sound like a bad idea at all maybe something too match trim on drawers would be cool. Ok so down to metal, or natural...... I can always paint it white down the road

I'd put a couple coats of clear poly on it and call it a day.

I think the natural wood looks nice against the red cabinets.

Leave the plywood top as is, no need to paint...any well used work bench is going to get covered in grease/dirt/oil/etc and be black on it's own before long.

Looks good man, I have a my benchtop painted black and it works for me. It gets scuffed or scratched, I break out the Rustoleum and touch it up. In your case, some poly would look nice.

One question, I see the computer monitor but where's the tower and keyboard.

One suggestion, rip down a piece of 1x pine, finish nail it to the face of the bench top. It can be replaced as it gets banged up and will help the edge of the plywood from splintering. About the only thing worse than a plywood splinter in your finger is a PT wood splinter that gets infected.

I would go with 1/8th inch hardboard, with a maple or oak trim along the front, on mine I used a few pin nails to hold the hard board in place, when it gets worn I pull up the hard board and replace.

I do like the hardboard idea. I use it on my other bench. someone said nice piece of stainless. I really like that myself but probably not cheap.

I have gotten a few used stainless counter tops from one of the local hospitals, they have a place where they put takeouts until the scrap guy comes, I just stop by and load up.

i really never thought about the top... I just was gonna make a replacement top for one I had before just longer. Now thats its built now all the ideas are coming to me. Being thinking I might just go with a place of hardboard just cause it matches my other bench. its cheap and easily replaced. I really liked the stainless top myself and might do that at some point but for now i might paint it and throw some hardboard on it.

whats the story on the spatula?

Glad someone asked.... I was camping and locked keys in truck we trying the coat hanger deal and friend came over after trying for awhile and said all you need is a spatula. Well he tried and dropped in the door.... its rattled in door for awhile until I ripped door apart to get out. I mounted it on a piece of wood and gave him following year at camping trip. LOL Good times Good stories...

Glove is probably his trophy plaque thing like a shrine. For example: Texas Chainsaw guy ripped someone's face off and mask it on his own face. Chainsaw is his hand's best friend. So glove is the same thing with this dude.

YES YES.... its the glove I was wearing when I cut my finger with grinder and needed 5 stitches thus the name of my garage.

Looks good!

How does the laptop hold up to being in the garage? I'd like to do something like that but I'm concerned that the heat/dust/cold would screw it up.

actually that computer was the laptop I brought to work for a few years. It always hell up bouncing around it truck for that time until hinges broke. I always used it in garage since about 2008. Its always been my garage computer and I mounted it fan side out for for better air flow.

Great garage! Thanks for posting in my thread and letting me know about yours.

I like the organization, and the ideas with the buckets as well as the containers. I plan to invest in some containers in the future, but was holding off to get my stuff better organized so that I buy a bunch of the same kind/color of containers at once and not have to relabel for times (will probably still happen).

Though the bucket idea I could implement pretty soon. I was wondering where a good spot for my shop towels/micro fiber towels, etc might be? I live in the Phoenix, AZ area and we get dust storms a lot this time of year. So I do not like to leave items out that I do not want dust getting in.

And I fully endorse your signature quote "Its not the money that makes the garage but the blood, sweat and effort you put into it!". Isn't that the true! Though some people here have spent a good deal of $ on their garage's with floors, equipment and all.. but some of the coolest stuff I've seen is where they use their imagination and come up with something unique that fits THEIR need. Heck, something as simple as selecting the right paint and doing up the trim correctly can make a huge impact.

Paint part of it and snip fit a piece of appliance jacket on part of it. I can get in the habit of keeping a cardboard within reach and making a mess on that, disposable and its so much easier to pre deal with most anything than to clean it later. I would die without paper towels. I love the idea of the tool boxes, I was trying to think my way out of a little bottle neck and in all reality the easiest thing to do would be buy 1 or 2 of those as the base and go from there

Can you explain how exactly you did this? I love the idea of making the 44" boxes into a workbench but lack the knowledge to do so. If it's "your secret" - no problem - just figured I'd ask. Thanks!

Actually, it was quite easy.... I wanted to keep it mobile so I kept the casters on. No handles and just slide them together. I built top with 3/4 plywood with 2 x 4 front to back. Its same idea as the way I built my shelves. If you see gap above top 2 x 4 that's so I can raise top and screw it in place and roll boxes out. Idk if that covers it but any questions just ask

Exactly my thought. A sacrificial piece that's smooth.

I'm thinking that myself but had some paint laying around and the natural wood looked good but now looked unfinished and dirty. I DO everything on the cheap so hardboard is up my alley unless some stainless falls in back of my truck.
