My Two Car Garage on the Cheap...

I bought this house 2 years ago. I used to be into building trucks, and whatnot, but time, money, getting married, etc changes our objectives.

Currently I've been into old Japanese motorcycles, because they're cheap, and don't take up much space. We unfortunately couldn't find a house that suited both of our desires that had a 3 car attached garage. Although it was disappointing, there are other more important factors in life, like affording the house payment, and being realistic.

We have a side entry garage, and it leaves the ability to add a garage at the end of the drive in the long term prospects. We just had our first child (he's 18 days old now), so ... that might be a pretty long term project.

Anyway, here's what i've done thus far.

First, i piled a bunch of **** into it:

I was finishing our basement at the time in the winter, so no time to do anything. I scored the cabinets from work for free. You'll find, i like free.

I spent a lot of time trying to figure out my tool box situation. I have a 26" snap-on roll cab at work that I use, but lightly. I was looking at the craftsman 42" stuff, and I just couldn't get off my wallet. Then, this lower box ended up on sale for like 200 bones at harbor freight... couldn't beat it for $/in^2. Ended up getting the upper a few months later for the same price. Figure the tools that are in it I would rather spend more on than the box. And, it's nice enough for a hobbyist at home. The drawers are a little shallow is my biggest gripe. But, it's almost full, so... eeeh!

Anyway, fast forward a few months. I used the scrap wood from the basement finishing project to get my cabinets mounted:

The counter top i found at my buddys house as he had new counters installed that week, SCORE (Free).

Added some 4 x 4 lights that also came from work, i got 10 fixtures, and only ended up using 4 of them thus far. That changed my life. Light is great.

Here's a current over view, i added a shelf above the tool box for those power tools that don't get used a lot, but not worth hiding too far away...

In the future i need to do some more organization. I have a lot of **** in the garage that needs to be put somewhere else. The garage has a huge pitch, and they didn't build it with attic trusses, so maybe someday i will look at what i can do, I could gain a 16x8 room up there if i tried hard enough

But, time is limited and I would rather finish my current bike project:

Web Cam, Bored to 605, and some other go fast goodies.

I'm into tinkering around with bikes as well. If you're thinking about getting a bike lift I have a Direct Lift Pro Cycle XLT DT I got from Greg Smith Equipment. Been a great lift. Good value...

I like the idea of a bike lift. But I would rather send that money on the bike. For now my home built table is working OK. Having the easy up down would be nice, but a little hard work keep $ in the bank.

Thanks for the post. It got me thinking that it would be fun to pick up an old Japanese bike and fix it up.

When I was a kid I had a Kawaski 500 2-stroke....it was scary fast! How could I go about finding something like that? Ideas appreciated.

craigslist.

they give them away if you are willing to wait. I paid 100 dollars for this motorcycle. It was mostly complete, and not siezed. Only 9k miles on the clock which is pretty low.

The 500 2-strokes are somewhat collectors bikes, but, pretty easy to come by in my area.

Just start looking on craigslist, and you can find bikes all day long in the sub 300 dollar range that 'need carb work'. As the economy is down right now, people are unloading a lot of these old bikes to make a few bucks. It's a good time to get a project.

Can I see a clearer picture of that workbench you have the bike on?
It looks like what i want to build for my shop
Thanks

Thanks,

I built it from leftover 2x4's, and some leftover casters i had from another project.

My mom actually found the black and white squared linoleum in the garbage of their neighbors. Just enough for a top for my table. The top is studs horizontal every 10 inches. with 1" particle board on the top. Once i find some more scrap particle boards i will finish up the shelves.

Does it flex with a bike on it? I was thinking about making one out of something like birch plywood. But all I want is basically an assembly table I can roll around the shop.
Looks good!

no. it will hold the bike on the top, and myself with it (had to happen a few times).

My bike is currently resting on the back tire, and two jack stands under the frame, and so far, no problems. No bowing, or flexing.

The bike is only probably 300lbs, but if i were building a full dress Harley, i might consider another layer of plywood.

The rolling feature is what i wanted. Last night i had to spin it around to get better light for extracting and re-tapping the exhaust manifold blind holes, and it worked great. Just make sure the bike is secured to the table.

The second reason it's on casters, is because i like to park in my garage in the winter, so if i don't get finished, it tucks off to the side, and i can get my car back in there.
