I posted my shop before a long time ago, but I have had so many updates. Lately I have been using the shop as employment, as I am a full time college student. I do woodworking for a business, mainly cutting boards.

Most common woods that I use are Black Locust and Ash. Lumberyards are expensive, so I try to avoid them as much as possible. I acquire wood through personal sales, and have my own logs sawed. I take logs that have come down for some reason. I got some that were taken down for firewood and never used. One the electrical company cut down due to proximity to wires. A couple fell down from base rot. Others were standing dead. I try to not take down any live trees.

Picture one: Ash that I rescued and had sawed into planks. Both White Ash and the less common Green Ash.

Picture two: Maple, Hemlock, and Ironwood (Hophornbeam.)

Three and Four: Hardwood lumber racks I built. Oak, Cherry, Ash, Butternut, Maple, etc.

Picture five: Pile of black locust that I bought. This wood had been sitting for about 20 years outside. Black Locust is rated for 75 years of outside ground exposure. The grey will plane off.

Got most of the machines that I need for woodworking. Apparently I forgot to take a picture of the planer while I was there.

Of course I also have the mechanic tools. Stuff breaks, and I fix them.

A couple of projects that I did some stuff on today. Made a little bit more progress on my black locust box. Should be able to finish it this weekend. Also had enough time to finish one of my newly designed mini-me cutting boards. What do you think?

I put my car and truck back inside when I am done and gone. What do you think? Thanks, Ryan.

No woodworkers on this forum?

Yes you found one here. Your shop looks like you can handle the wood. I like it and the tools you have. The workpieces you have done and shown are very nice. Seems I remember you posting here earlier in the year?

Nice that you can have a shop and fit two vehicles as well. I look forward to more postings!!

Best Regards
Herb

Over the summer I did a lot of dumpster diving. I found a German bayonet from WW1. Today I decided to make a plaque to display it on. Made it out of IPE. Got most everything done. Tomorrow I am going to do a few finishing touches and add finish to it. What do you think? For those interested in IPE: http://www.wood-database.com/lumber-identification/hardwoods/ipe/

Finished the bayonet display plaque today. Finished it with Teak Oil. What do you think?

Very nice work, love the C10(?) pickup!

If you are going to plane or joint a lot of wood, a dust collector and one of those "filtration fans" will save your sinuses and lungs. It does not need to be super expensive, just move air. When I was about 20, I planed a pile of walnut in Dad's shop in the basement. Not sure how he ever forgave me, everything in the entire place was covered in about 1/4" thick dust!

I love cutting into red oak but the smell turns to irritation after awhile.

Nice, love it. I've never worked with locust before but I do have a stack of rough sawn black walnut and just picked up a 15" Jet planer a couple of weeks ago. I also have a hard time finding decent hardwood without paying an arm and a leg, there is lots of ash and oak around and plenty of small mills so hopefully the planer will help with that.

I like those cutting boards, have you ever made an end grain cutting board, I want to try this one this winter. http://lumberjocks.com/degoose/blog/10460

Thanks for the tip! Currently I have vacuums hooked up to a lot of the machines, but they unfortunately don't get everything. I got the C20 when I was 15. It was my first rig. I attached the cow skull a couple of weeks ago to make it look like a ranch truck.

I've found sawing your own trunks is the best way to avoid paying $40 per board, as long as you don't mind waiting for them to dry. Never done an end grain board before. I would imagine the wood selection would be more limited as particularly porous woods would want to be avoided.

I'm on my phone or I'd give you the 5 stars this thread deserves! I was going to ask about the end grain butcher blocks as well, they are a bit more difficult I hear, I have never made any kind so major props to you for making/posting yours.

Nice shop, love all the tools and the space you have. Also love the 68 (I've been keeping my eye open for the right one for myself). Go for it with the end grain. It makes for a much stronger cutting board and they look great. Since you've got the tools just remember to take your time on the thickness planer and make it in smaller sections and then glue those sections together. There's a good rule of thumb to oiling them as well. Once a day for a week, once a week for a month, and so on depending on how much you use it. I'll upload a photo of one I did out of maple, cherry, and walnut when I'm home next.

Thanks for all of the feedback guys. Tonight I did as much as I could on the huge cutting board that a guy hired me to build. More difficult as it can't be planed as a complete unit. 30 by 18 by 1.5.

Did a little more organizing as well. This area looked like hell. Moved the red box and a mouse scurried. Now I have the ancient shop vac hooked up to the band saw, and found new homes for some of the others.

Any vice experts here? Got this one at a yard sale for 5 bucks over the summer. No markings. Just attached it to the bench tonight.

Nice shop set up. I mess with wood a little so I know what you mean by $40 a board. Keep on working and learning and you will always have a tradable skill.O:)

I have more questions than answers.
I would love to have the selection of hardwoods you have.

What are you using for a finish on your cutting boards?

I agree with the end grain cutting boards as another option for your customers. The Wood Whisper has a great YouTube video on how to do some cool end grain boards. It's not very tough. Sorry I don't have a link.

Have you looked in putting cyclone set ups on your vacuums? While I have a large system, for my portable one I just have a small metal garbage can that I put some 4" outlets on that works very well. Cheap and makes emptying much easier.

For my air filtration system I have a roof mounted box. This week I was in a shop where the guy used heater ducting and filters going into the ducting. He was using a furnace fan to pull the air. That thing moves a lot of air and very cheap to build. Thinking about incorporating one for my next shop and maybe in my welding area.

I would like to know how you like your new spindle sander. I have an older Ryobi that leaves a lot to be desired. I don't use it much as they had a recall and the new parts make it noisy as heck. The fact they had a recall tells how well they are designed. The new parts are just cheap plastic. I won't put a dime back into it when they go again.

Keep having fun.

Haven't used it yet apart from testing it. Do like the design. Got a table build coming up that I will need it for, so stay posted.

You have a good functional setup there. The cutting boards look great. Easy side money and little over head. That right there is key. All my tools I have are from bartering for projects. Keep it up, your quality and craftsmanship will create a name for you.

I have a woodshop that I run when Im home. Mainly a family member or friend sees something on that pinterest site and ask if I can make something similar. Im not one to turn down work. That extra money goes right back into my truck addiction.

I dont think these "star ratings" mean much to anyone. I seldom look at them or give any ratings. I did punch you a "5" rating just now. I think your doing a great job!
