Been needing a hoist in the shop and this is what I came up.
I had the materials other than the beam.
I ended up getting a beam from a friend, that came with a 1 ton trolley and electric hoist, for not much more than a new beam.
It was even milled in the good old USA, nice score.
Anyhow, here is a few pics.

Like the design, especially the upper leg braces that do NOT interfere with full travel -

Looks to me like that beam could handle a couple tons - is the 1/2 ton rating because the hoist is old, or did the beam used to be longer, or??!? Steve

Nice work, I like the adjustability of it.

All this talk of gantry cranes really makes me want to take the tubing I have and rig one up. My biggest issue is i'm on mostly dirt so I'd have to make some big pads for it to sit on and big wheels to move it with (unloaded)

Thanks Bukit,
The beam is a S10x 25#x 12’ long, so with a span of 11’, I would not think twice about picking 2 ton, at least as far as the beam is concerned.
I'm guessing that it was rated at 1/2 ton because of ease and cost of getting a structural man to sign off on it with out any modifications, knowing full well that it is cabable of plenty more.
Bear in mind that it was constructed by men that knew steel and before all the liability and insurance nonsense.

Thanks lunacy,
This one will be used outside on gravel also,I left the ends of the bottom members open to put jacks of some sort in for uneven ground.
I have some heavy 8” x 2-1/2” casters for moving it in the shop and will move it with the skid steer when outside.

It made it's first pick today.
Had to rob these casters off a fab table for it.
I also moved the table back to where it belonged with it and it moved better loaded than I anticipated.
Empty, it rolls very well.
The casters have swivel locks that really help with steering.
Twoblock hook height is 7'-8" at it's lowest setting, 11'-2 at highest setting and 9'-1" at a setting that clears the bar joists.
This contraption should help with keeping my guts out of my nuts.
I'm tickled

Got the electric hoist rigged today.
So,now between the two hoists, there is 2 ton capacity.

Pretty slick Royce. I like how you triangulated the top.
You must be getting some light by now or at least a dull glimmer?

Thanks Nasty,
I like to do the knees that way for full range on the trolleys.
We are up to 8 hours of daylight and gaining 6 minutes a day.
Nothing like sunshine to beat down the cabin fever.

I had a couple of the lads over today for a shooting match and we decided that the loser had to ride the block.
So then, it has officially load tested with 100# of grandkid nonsense.
Made for some good teasing and yucks.

Check the two lower nuts, picture 6, they appear to be loose. The split-lock washers are not flat.

I hot bolted the trolley on before I tipped it up, so I would not have to do it off of a ladder.
If you look close in the same picture, there is no shim pack or hoist attachment plate either.
I have since added a plate to hang the hoist, the proper amount of shim and torqued the bolts.

Pretty cool idea. Will be great for lifting and moving heavy stuff around.

A guy I used to know had something similar in his workshop. He didn't build it, the thing was there when he bought the property. Had a house, attached garage and a detached workshop. His I-Beam went across the whole width of the shop and sat on the side walls which had some healthy supports under the I-Beam. As far as I know he never really used it for anything other than just playing with it.
