Hi folks, eThis week starts with a sidetrack, a sure sign I need a break from the Holbrook project to get the creativity flowing again! I took one look at the cold damp weather and realised I would soon need to heat the workshop, and so decided to get to the bottom of the circulation problem and did just that, but what a game it was, and I am still not sure of the cause, though it was definitely a blockage, physical or air, that was the cause! It is now fixed, and the pump is silent, and actually circulating the water!Typically, the next day and the rest of the week were bright and very warm! On with the Holbrook, I fit the control handle stop, and start making the belt guard, the final step before it all comes to pieces for painting!

Hi folks, This week I make the belt guard for the Holbrook lathe, and make and fit the stop and the hold up mechanism. Some TIG and Mig welding, a bit of milling, but no Rapidor this week! Thursday/froday my old mate Richard Teale comes over, and we fit a new roof to the blacksmiths shop area of the workshop. This morning I am stiff as a board and ache all over, but it is done apart from the last 1/2 sheet as you will see! Phil, in typical East Yorkshire weather! It can't make its mind up!!

Hi folks, Back in the Workshop for my first attempt at a full week, although in reality I am doing 11-00 till 4-00! It is enough at the moment as believe it or not I average about 3.5 miles a day! Tiring but I did it! It will get easier! A day of fallen tree clearing on Tuesday and the rest on the belt guard for the Holbrook lathe. I hoped to complete it, but will do that early next week! Thanks for watching!

Hi folks, I get the belt guard finished, and a few other little jobs completed on the Holbrook B9 and the realisation dawns that it is nearly finished! I have the collet draw tube to complete, and the belt guard pivot to finalise, and then it is time to finalise the underframe, and remove it to drill the holes for fixing and lifting, aqnd then it's paint, paint and more paint!

Hi folks, Short week, Monday on Taxi duties, and Thursday at the osteopaths with my shoulder strain! I finally decide to get stuck in to the Holbrook steelwork, and strip off all the drive and underskids for drilling and painting, it goes well, and I may sneak back today (Saturday) and put another coat on, which will be the first coat of black. If it is not sufficiently dry by Monday I will be starting another project in the new space I have now that the stairlifts have GONE!

Hi folks, Holbrook painting, antique repairs, and a future project on a Watsonian D type jaguar replica. If anyone remembers the very popular TV series Lovejoy, he had a guy called Tinker who was always "improving" antiques, I am begining to feel like Tinker should be my middle name!

Hi folks, Monday didn't happen due to a visit to Hull Eye Horstipal, and Tuesday, after a small poo run we tackled a job which has been laying around for a few years! A large ash tree branch had fallen into a hung up position in a hawthorn and until we moved it we could not start the fence we were going to start when lockdown occured! It is now gone, and fencing can commence eventually, more tree demolition next week! Then onto the Holbrook auxilarries and I finally get the guard assembled and into primer! Hi folks, Monday didn't happen AGAIN due to taking DIL to Dewsbury to buy a car, chariot racing on the M1 was NOT fun!! A mixed week of painting, showing you all the faults it is possible to get in paintwork! I get there in the end though! Tree work and logging follows as we fell a leylandi growing in the wrong place next to a wall and log it all up. I do some outside clearing at the workshop, and end up taper turning some wood for a tool I broke, then its back on the Holbrook and get the underskids sorted for captive nuts! I'm fair knackered!! Hi folks, A very busy mixed week of welding, logging and final assembly on the Holbrook! I get the skids and countershaft support back on the lathe, and make the jacking bars to make the lathe easier to move around the workshop. Tuesday is a field day! we finish logging up the Leylandi, get the 2CV tractor going and and move all the brash to the "chicken run" for a future conflagration. I pack up a spare tailstock for the colchester student lathe as it is being shipped to Thailand!, and as usual have a cup of tea or two and a good tidy up. Sold two Motors this week and loads of other gear this week, so my "goods Outward area is almost empty!

Hi folks, A very busy mixed week again!! Monday a bit of painting, a bit of tidying and organisation as my FB marketplace sales campaign gets underway and all my accumulated junk flies out of the door in exchange for good hard cash!!Tuesday in the field was awful! Raining on and off all day and quite cold again so we did a poo run and then some maintenance on the Westwood garden tractor, which is still going like a train, albeit one with a very loose engine, but we soon fixed that! Wednesday I explore the depths of the eternal dilemma, should I fix it or just bin it? Well I fixed it, but it took a day and a half, and the fix (on a garden shredder) is not perfect, After that, as an aside I get my old jack up in the air and find its problem, and fix it! I did not realise how old it was! It is an antique from about 1930! No matter cos it flew out the door one day after advertising it! All in, a good week!!

Hi folks, A short week this week, Monday O got excellent news from my surgeon, and Friday Catherine got a neurological shakedown that was shall we say, less than rigourous! We started, or at least continued the tuesday field day with a final log clearance and a bonfire of the remaining brash and twigs, , Wednesday I finished the Holbrook, and Thursday I wired some 3 phase sockets for uncle Michael (my brother) for his Boxford VSL lathe and his drill press, which we have to convert back to 3 phase at a later date! A short but productive week!

Hi folks, A varied and interesting week of sorts, creating space in the workshop by dejunking and removing stuff that really should be stored elswhere, or used up! I pop down to Mikes just to oversee his fitting of a new burner motor to the oil fired boiler, I wasn't needed as he did it all and off it went! Tuesday we were once again outstandng in our field, and got a start on the fencing. The rest of the week involved coming to terms with the fact that if I was going to get rid of the rust old dexion shelving, I would have to build something to replace it! Woodwork sometimes brings out the worst in me, and my efforts to make a good job end up in frustration, but I soldiered on through the black clouds of doom, and eventually achieved a bright new tommorow or at least built some usefull storage shelves!

Hi folks,
A very productive week with some Rapidor sawing, welding and fabrication, fencing and workshop gets a complete ground up rejig in order to get the Holbrook lathe into its new position now that it is completed apart from the shakedown trials and any mods I need to finesse(?) its operation! The post knocker I made on Monday revolutionised Tuesdays fencing the field session but it is a bit too long for six foot posts so I will be making a smaller one next monday! it has already been christened "son of cyberman" All good fun and a very productive week!

Hi folks, A very varied week of jobs, encompassing consumer electronics, Welding and fabrication, garden tractors, fencing and tree husbandry! The yard tidy got more or less finished, the westwood got some much needed carb attention, and we got a lot more bank clearing and fencing done. Then back to the workshop for more clearing out and repairing!

Hi folks, A shorth week due to a trip to York on Friday, but we get stuck into the mini D type, get the body off and get the engine layout sorted and fitted as far as the drive mechanism is concerned, when I get chain and sprockets finished I want to put the body back on to finalise the engine position. I get some more sorting out and spring cleaning done in the workshop, and a lot more items for sale photographed and listed. Sales have been made already!!

Hi Folks, hours late with my posting, due to being in the workshop selling odds and sods and completely losing track of time! We crack on with the Dtype engine fit, while Andy gets on with the body shell and get the drive built and working, and also spent a day moving 3/4 of a ton of dogfood and fixing tractors. I also recieved a very generous gift from a viewer, Mr John Johnson from Darlington way, a genuine Rapidor run off stand, Tis a beautiful thing!

Hi Folks,
Late again, but I thought it might not happen at all because I lost (mislaid?) the camera! In actual fact I had mislaid it on the floor of Keiths car after filming the ride to Driffield, and only found it again this morning.! What I shot is what there is, and I missed a lot because of the pre-occupation with clearing the house and then cleaning, redecorating, clearing two blocked chimneys and 12 years of nicotine off the walls, normal service will be resumed as soon as possible!

Hi Folks,
I am not dead (yet!) but haven't been posting in the engineering forums as what I have been recording has been restoring my house in Langtoft in preperation for its next tenant. The house is finished at last, well nearly anyway but I will spare you the rest, apart from maybe getting the tree stump out, for which I have a cunning plan! I get a steel welding bench and add it to the workshop, and next week I will be fitting it and also adding a couple of vices and generally sorting the blacksmiths shop/welding area, and about time too! I feel another selling decluttering session coming on! Phil in summery East Yorkshire

Hi Folks Back in the workshop for more decluttering and setting up the welding bench with a couple of vices. It is very hot here, though cooler in the workshop, but I certainly have not been enjoying the heat outside! Lovely to sit in but not to work in! So I get the bench fitted, and the vices, get rid of a load of scrap out of the luton, and everything suddenly starts to look better. A good tidy up is the best soul boost you can give yourself, well legally anyway!!

Hi Folks I build paint and install a winerack in the house, mainly because it had one before, but there is no room for it in the new kitchen layout, so I rebuild it in steel! The second half is the Driffield steam Rally annual parade down Driffield main street, some wonderful steam engines at close quarters! The parade parks up from the Market place and extends to the full length of the street, I tried to walk down to the far end where all the motor vehicles are, but there was just too many people! Never seen it so busy!! Phil, in cloudy and cooler East Yorkshire.

Hi Folks The week begins on the Westwood garden tractor trying, and failing to cure the persistent and worsening problem with losing power and failing after 5 minutes running, I have now got a new coil to try, and also found another carb which I didnt know I had! The carbs we have both have stuck in main jets, so when I have fitted the new one I will take them to the workshop and try the screwdriver in the pillar drill trick to remove the jets! Then on to the Q&S hacksaw machine, I get all the parts cleaned down and start the reassembly, I rebuild the hydraulics and start reassemblingthe overarm, only to find a load of tiny No4 UNC screws are missing! More next week! Phil, in the East Yorkshire monsoon season!

A marathon of a video covering a B&S Flojet carb rebuild, sorting out what turned out to be a very simple fault on the westwood garden trator, more Qualters and smith hacksaw rebuilding, Some lathework, and a day clearing the orchard with the now fixed garden tractor and starting our bumper fruit harvest! Hi Folks
Monday in the workshop tinkering when a call from keith to say the Westwood tractor is not answering to the helm, and I rebuild the steering mechanism on Tuesday, wednesday 30 fence panels arrive, and for the rest of the week, we have fun in the sun, and some rain, fitting them! It went very well, 25 fitted and about another three or four posts and rails to go in before we fit the rest. Very hard work which we will both be glad to see the back of, especially as we both have had the flu this week, but as I often say to Keith, the work is the only thing keeping us alive!!

Hi Folks
The screws arrive after some delay, which was odd because the next order from the same company arrived in two days!! I don't get it finished but oh so close! belt to tension, plug to fit, and then start up, test and set the hydraulics and the stop cam up! With the fencing in the field finished we take the fine weather opportunity to clear up all the bits and pieces that formed the previous fence, and general clear a strip about 100 yards long and 12 wide!much log sawing and Westwood working, We all have some covid like virus at the moment and are definitely operating under par! It was fun, but exhausting!

Hi Folks
I get the Qualters and Smith saw running, and adjust the hydraulics, and almost get it right, but I have decided to strip the lift ram next week to check the settings as it sometimes doesnt cut quite through before it goes into lift mode! We finish the wire mesh around the trees to make the fence dog proof in both directions, and clear Damson wood! Friday I get my Honda mower running after some tinkering and clear my garden ready for fencing and finishing off at Ratten row! It's only the work that is keeping us alive, as I always say to Keith! Long may it continue!

Hi Folks
I get the hydraulic lift cylinder reset, and test the saw, and it works perfectly! I put the sides back on and its finished! Then onto the Frank steam cleaner, I get the motor running the right way and the pressure wash works, but it doesnt turn on the burner when its calling for heat, so either pressure or flow switch? At this point I am feeling like **** again so I go home and spend the rest of the week in bed after advertising steam cleaner as is! However I have decided to give it a couple more hours just to check the switches are operating and see if I can sort it, I do not like selling stuff that doesnt work 100%! Friday feeling much better I get a call from Keith about his computer, and attempt a fix, to no avail, and realise that I have forgotten most of my computer fault diagnosis knowledge through lack of use! Saturday morning and feeling rough again!

Hi Folks I am back!! feeling almost back to normal after a horrendous bout of what I am told from the symptoms is a new covid variant which is lasting up to 4 month! I had it for 5 weeks, and I am now feeling much better! Work on the house is drawing to a close and I am going to get it up for rent this weekend, Keith and I cleared the garden, put the new fence up and ripped out the tree stump in this video, and also I did a day of antique repairs for my dealer mate! replumbed the waste on the dog bath which had detached itself and emptied all over the kennel floor. Ongoing work on the steam cleaneradvanced a tech level when I remembered there is a fuel level switch in the tank (although not on the wiring diagram!) which takes nearly a gallon of fuel before it switches on! We will get there! Phil, in the autumnal splendour of East Yorkshire.

Hi Folks, Been a bit preoccupied this week with getting my new tenant into the house and getting all the work finished! Our attempts with the ladder failed to get high enough to fit the chimney cowl, so we have passed that over to Harlands, our local builders and joiners as they have access platforms, and a Telehandler with a man bucket! I spent a morning going round the hardware shops and builders merchants trying to find one, no luck, and ended upat the woodburner shop at Foxholes who managed to fid one! So, some antique repairs , a cross vice free off and set up, and some general tinkering and waffling! Enjoy!

Hi Folks, The house project is coming to an end, new tenant is in (almost) the woodburner/central heating is working and she is getting organised with furniture, so my job there is almost over and I can return to the workshop with a clear head and concentrate on the job in hand! The only time I ever got lines at school it was " I must concentrate on the job in hand"! Still having trouble with that! So, the chimney cowl goes on, and I get back on to the D type replica drive system and basically start again and make huge leaps forward! I turn up the shaft for the clutch bell and then rejig the drive mechanism! All in a days work tinkering here atrough but slow engineering!

Hi Folks,
The electrician turns up at the house to do the EICR test and we have a few C2's!! correct within 28 days! so I fit a new consumer unit, find a fault and do some odd simple fixes to the electrical installation. I get back on the D type transmission briefly, and it is beginning to come together! The 5C collet arrives to complete the next stage of the new shaft, so I might get back on to that next week, but the first priority is to get the new tenant happily seetled in to the house! Hi Folks,
A short week due to getting daughters picked up from York, EICR's at the cottage and getting my new (to me) car delivered. It arrived, the cottage passed the EICR and My daughter dissapeared to her boyfriends! In the meantime there was tidying up, and antique repairs, with more to come, maybe next week! I lit the boiler in the workshop for the first time this year, and all worked perfectly! Then it snowed!

Hi Folks, I spent most of Monday getting my new car on the road, having parked the Outlander at Langtoft on Sunday, and got a lift back to Driffield! Tuesday and it was time to install the little fireplace woodburner for Lucy, the new occupier of my Ratten row house. Quite an involved job to do it properly, but the result was very pleasing, although it was a tight fit! The new motor is lovely apart from the eu de dog which permeates the rear cargo space, but I will attempt to get it in the workshopnext week and give it a clean! The only thing not working seems to be the passenger door mirror which does not fold in or adjust, so I suspect a fuse, more may be revealed later in the week! Hi Folks, A week of electrical problems, firstly a platform lift, and then on the Volvo! I am beginning to see why it was a grand under book price!! The lift proved to be a simple case of neglect! one flat battery, and one defective battery because the charger had failed. Moving on with the car, I find that the passenger side front and rear doors are both dead, no central locking, no electric windows or mirror folding and adjusting, and as usual suspect a complex problem, when it actually looks like it may be quite simple as some youtube research shows a problem inside the rubber duct in the door jamb is a common failure point, a tiewrap on the harness anchoring it to the plug fitted too tightly causes wiring failure! having said all that I don't mind fixing a few electrical gremlins because overall it is a superb car, justlike all the other Volvos I have had have been!

Hi Folks, The Title of this weeks pathetic offering is an old familial saying stemming from my Grandmother from the East End who used to say, instead of slip or fall, "don't go a Gaby glide" a popular Dance craze when she was a lass in the 1920's ( she was the Essex Black Bottom champion!) I think the frontispiece was tacked on by my brother Mike! Well my week "went a Gaby Glide" and I got about a day and a halfs work done, in five days. The fix on the Volvo was very satisfying, although it took two of us to get the door off and back on, as they are heavy!! love the way they come off though, 2 bolts and one Torx screw! the build quality of Volvos has always been impressive, but I think the wiring harness on these leaves a bit to be desired, although door link cables give problems on all marques! If I do any more next week I will film it, but it is unlikely as I have a guy coming to pressure clean the central heating system on Monday and the car goes in to Lawson and Tompkin on Wednesday for a service and general look over! I will endevour to enjoy Christmas, as I encourage you all to do! Bah Humbug!!

Hi Folks, I have finished my annual hibernation and ventured back to the windswept wastes of Langtoft! Two little jobs, and back on the D type replica, workshop is lovely warm and tidy, so unless it snows, and as we come to the end of February thatis less likely, I will be posting videos again, weekly if I can get enough together, Hope you enjoy this weeks bag!

Hi Folks, Spring is here, meteorologically speaking, and I hope to soon be back to a video every week! There is upcoming field work as well, to get a head start before it all starts to grow like mad! This week I dive into the D type replica engine fitting, and make good progress. I use the two slot method to get the bearing plate adjustable in two planes and also add a slot for chain tensioning, but I stall out when the only milling cutter I have of the right size turns out to be as blunt as my A*se!! Thursday is antique repairs and another wide variety of antique metalwork to fix and fettle ready for the upcoming antique fair season! Thanks for watching and see you all next week!
