my weekend project!

this was my little weekend project. i gathered a few friends and family over to my moms house to build a 12x24x4 halfpipe for my little brother. so far weve gotten 8x28ish ft with the decks and 4 high built. started saturday around 11 and finished up today around 5pm. right around 450 total cost so far. it has this 1 1/2 i.d. galvanized pipe on the edges of the transitions with have a 7 ft. radius. which i think should be ok for an 11 yr old oh and there were no plans, this was all just kinda thrown together off the top of my/our heads.
as for the other 4 ft. wide... its gunna have to wait a month or so because im moving and busy as hell with work. hell i had to take this weekend off 4 weeks ago! so for now he can figure it out and get used to it and in a month he can shred! lol

The Neighbor behind me had built one for his son and friends years ago. The Plywood was skinned with thin aluminum sheeting and the top rails were galvinized pipes. held up real nice even through a few Chicago winters.
I'm afraid that the plywood may go bad is not covered by something.

should probably put a layer of masonite down on it. not only to protect plywood from chipping but to allow a smoother/faster ride.

well when i showed up today they were out there painting it bright white in preparation for the neighbors boyfriend to come over and graffiti it. i didnt know they had a school for it, but apparently this kids going to school for graffiti art? i understand what ur saying about masonite, but it really doesnt hold up to weather at all unless sealed with something and im not going to be the one doing it so i can pretty much guarantee it wont get done right by an 11 yr old. and the whole faster ride thing, maybe after hes had it for a year or so we'll worry about going faster, but first he just needs to learn how to keep the wheels DOWN on the ramp. honestly i dont really care what he does with the thing, my job is done. i built it and everything else is up to him and our mom. but i did tell him if he didnt follow moms rules i would be the first person out there tearing it apart so i think it'll be good. plus mom's not stupid, shes been a homeowner for a long time and knows how to protect against water, lol

make sure mom sets up a release form for the kids, or atleast talks with the parents of whichever kids want to ride.

yeah shes already talked to his friends parents and theres going to be some sort of private property signs incorporated in the graffiti for what it matters, and when its not being used were going to run a chain under the ramp and just wrap it up and lock it. nobody will be skating over a chain!

you really wont get more speed from the masonite but it had one major advantage. you slide so much better on it than plywood. that means when he falls and he will fall alot, he'll slide more and wont get torn up as bad.

the pro grade ramps use stuff like ramp armor. its not cheap at 128 a 4x8 sheet and needs to go over plywood, but it should last longer. i've built a few pipes, but im a free rider and dirt is my ramp of choice

It's been a long, LONG time since I did any riding (1984/5/6) but don't you want some more vert on that ramp? Gonna be any bikes on it, or just skate wheels? My dad built me a sweet QP (BMX) when I was younger. Together we built a little half ramp opposite of it. Got it completed, Dad went inside, I blew out my knee on the first day. That was in 1986. First of three knee surgeries....your pictures bring back memories.

its not up to me, nor would it be my problem directly, but mom doesnt seem to give a damn about the insurance thing, but shes been fighting back and forth with insurance co. and the city for quite some time now about some other issues, so i think her feeling is **** them. i know she'll still be at fault, but its on her. i talked to her about every possibility that could come up with building this and she gave me the go ahead and funded the project. and as far as being a cool brother... i try to be, his dads a real douche so someone needs to be a good male figure in his life. i know cause my dad was a dipshit too, and now that i have a daughter i can see how much she really looks up to me and watches what i do and i dont want my brother to end up following my path when i was a little younger, so i try to find positive, constructive things for me and him to do together, although i dont think ill be skating with him...

Different style of skating nowadays. The half pipe I built in 1978 (when I was 14) was 8' wide, 20' in diameter, with 2' of vertical on either side. Now skating is street style, with lots of stuff to hop up on and grind against.

You got to give the kids what they want. That thing looks like a lot of fun.

they have only got private and keep off on it so far, i dunno if the guy was just one of those people that talks about things but never does them, but ive been busy with moving, work, and just general life, plus im not an artist, just good with my hands so the art thing is his problem:d

dude, you need to put a thin piece of masonite as the riding surface. TRUST ME. IT's waht the professional's use and it's cheap.
