My Welding Cart

I never really had a place for my welder. Now that In trying to get the garage organized and cleaned up (please don't mind the mess), I wanted someplace to put the welder and welding gear.

Its not completely finished and its still a work in progress but thought Id share up to this point.

I was originally just going to buy the Harbor Fright cart with the drawers but I had this old file cabinet I was going to throw away anyways so I thought Id try to repurpose it.

Obviously, the file cabinet would be too long with the tank hanging off the back so I recessed it into the cabinet some. Turns out a old 1 gallon can of paint is very close to the diameter of the welding tank.

And test fitting after cutting.

Bents some steel to weld onto the top and bottom to wrap around the tank and add some support to the cabinet after cutting the back out.

Made a angle iron frame, added wheels and casters. And painted most of it when we had a nice warm up in the weather one weekend.

Still need to paint the other drawer, add hooks for the ground cable and the feed cable and add eye hooks on the back for the tank to be secured.
Will also be adding a sheet of diamond plate to the top for the welder to sit on to finish it out.

Damn, that's really cool. Did I miss what you did with the drawer depth or did they clear the tank?

I don't think I took pictures of that part. The back plate of the drawers were spot welded on. I drilled the old spot weld out, cut the extra material off the back of the drawers and welded the back, back on. I will try and remember to get a picture of the finished drawer out of the cabinet then I paint the other one.

That's really clever and good looking. Only thing I would add is something to keep the bottom of the bottle from sliding out - another tie down lower, or just a tab welded on the diamond plate...

SilverSS1969 that's a great idea you have there.

I was thinking of the Harbor Freight welding cabinet also, but I don't like the lower flip up panel instead of a drawer, and the Northern Tool shipping is a deal breaker.

This week I saw what I think are called "support pedestal" file cabinets for sale, and I was wondering how to finish the open top etc. I like the one with the three drawers.

Then I found your post. Can I assume that you built the framework, and then slid the file cabinet into it?

Aren't the edges of the cut out portion sharp?
