Clean! Very nice job! I'm pestering the guy at a steel place's drop-shop for a sheet of 1/2". Said I could get it for about $125. I want to cut it down to roughly 3'x6' and do exactly as you did. I already have the legs...3/16" thick 4" square.

Very nice, I agree that no casters means it is more stable and less prone to drift about when working on big heavy stuff. A shelf underneath is always handy, however they do tend to collect junk.

Nice table. I put a shelf under mine but used expanded metal for the shelf so that all the shavings, grinding, and **** would fall thru to the floor.

I usually do just that...
But I started another trailer barbeque pit and that got the expanded metal priority! Haha!

I'm not ashamed to say my steel plates are always free or damn near.
I have a stockpile at the ranch, and what I don't have a lot of (like 8' of 3/8" plate) I usually can trade for from my supply of drill stem, angle, steel tubing, etc.

My advice, hit the scrap steel yards. There's a lot of good steel out there for just the cost of weight... A quick hit with a brush cup and it'll be bright as new. I have found a lot of GREAT steel at the yards here in Central TX.

Another suggestion... This is a great way to get a steep discount on plate steel.

Call your local welding supply / Co-op / Praxair / etc - or whoever sells steel in your area. Get a quote for the plate size and thickness you want. This will be your reference point.

-THEN-

Get on craigslist and find someone selling their old welding table with the equivalent / comparable top. I bet if your watchful you will be able to find a deal and pay a great deal less for a whole table than the price you were quoted for a new plate.

If it's a good enough deal, so what if ya have to drive 150 miles to pick it up or whatever.

Then just cut the top off of it, and fab up your table. Then take the leftover frame and sell it as scrap, or better yet keep the salvageable stuff or for future projects!
