My Wilton Vices

Back in the late 1990's or maybe even 2000, a buddy of mine who is an old machinist (retired now) knew I was looking for a big vice and told me Wilton vices were going to be the next big collectable and if I wanted one, to get one while they were still somewhat affordable.

So this is the first one I got. It's a big one. I got it for $85. I don't know if that was a good price back then or not, but I DO KNOW Wilton's are wonderful vices and worthy of all the praise heaped upon them. This one opens to about 8.5 inches. I've used it sometimes multiple times a day, sometimes not and it holds everything I've ever chucked up in it with just an easy turn of the handle. I love using it.

I've got it in my shop and as you can see I use it. It's not a pretty-boy but it's a hero in my book.

Here's the second one next to my big one. I have used this one sparingly as it is in such phenomenal shape.

I don't have a picture of this one's birthday but it was born in April of 1946 according to the date stamp. I paid $45 for this one. I keep this one wrapped in a protective moisture resistant covering. I used to take this one out on jobs and use it fastened to a 2X10 bolted to the back of my truck. But it's just too nice to take to work.

The jaws are pristine:

Roberts: you did well buying a couple old Wilton Bullets cause their demand and quality have kept the prices up there. they are also nice to use too.

here's a thread i started if you want to post up your vises over on that we are trying to figure out the dating system Wilton used. there are over 200 vises on a data base and we can always use a few more. plus another chance to post up your great vises.

here's the link if you want to post there too and have some time:

Thanks. I had wanted to do that but didn't know where the database was located. I'll do it today.
