After spending too long working in the dirt, and then in a rotting leaky garage, We finally put up a small shop last fall.

Its a 24x48x16 steel truss building, 10hx12w door on one end, man door on the side.

I wanted a 30x40, but as it sits theres 200 yards of fill to make this one happen, and mostly I didnt want to drop more fir trees.

So, We just built really tall ceilings to add a loft.

Im a fabricator that caters to the 4x4 overlanding crowd. One day Ill be doing a suspension rework on a truck, other days I may be building out a custom camper conversion.

This requires many different facets to fit in one space, and I hate clutter.

anyway, onto pictures :)

This is a monster poison ivy TREE we pulled from where the new pad will sit.
Pad will be to the right of my yellow dumptruck

I put up 350' of fence in the meantime to keep my neighbors dogs away.

the 2 post lift says it can go on 3" concrete with redhead anchors....No way. I sunk 14" Jbolts under 6" of concrete prior to pouring the pad.

As it sits now. most people take a pic of a clean shop, I took a pic of a filthy one :) Usually its much cleaner.

still not happy with my space but its getting there.

Moneypit. My question is how much did the building cost you without concrete and site work? I am looking at my options for building mine and keep going back and forth on what type to build. I can get the slab poured first and build the rest myself when I can afford it and I feel the steel truss type would be easier for me to build, but not sure if the cost is less than stick built or not.

THanks fellas.

The kit included all the steel, hardware, and Exterior lumber.

I think it was around 13k, with blueprints for concrete.

Its about a 7k concrete job.

For me it was the same price as wood because the idiots at the city wanted to see 12x12 #1 fir sunk into the ground 8', and 10' OC. If that wasnt crazy enough, purlins and girders needed to be 2x12 .

So instead of building a train trestle, I ordered the steel. much happier in the end, as I dont have any wood buried in the ground. I have far more headroom too, since I dont have conventional truss's. Its 15.5 at the inside eve, 19.5 at the peak. Gives me an 8' ceiling under my loft, and 6.5' ceiling on top at the low end.

nice welding table.

I love my table. 5'x8', 42" off the ground.

Its funny, everyone that comments on my table the next sentence out of their mouth is 'when ya gonna put a top on it?"

Nope! that table would fill with **** quicker than a cat hoarders living room!

:)

I've never seen 2x6 laid on the flat like that. Very cool way of doing it. Thanks for sharing!

It works well for insulating, not so well for hanging cabinets etc...

Speaking of, Im currently siting on a dilemma.

I have these:

I sold the uppers yesterday, and am going to sell the lowers I think. Im on the fence about it because they are the absolute sweetest cabinets Ive ever used.

What im looking for is a uniform shelving system on two walls. Im thinking I may do pallet racking. I found a outfit that has 18" deep vertical frames which is perfect.

The trouble is, I still want closed storage , like upper cabinets. Im thinking of boxing out areas of the pallet racking. Anybody have thoughts on this?

Real men have a personal dump truck (or think they need one). A load of dirt dumped in your driveway is over $100 around here. I know people who bought there own dump truck at the start of a building project and sold it for a profit when they were done.

Thanks for all the info, I still didn't catch who the manufacturer for this kit is? Very interesting structure. It looks like something a couple guys could handle putting up. Is the exterior steel sided?

True story! I hate renting tools, Ill buy them and sell once finished. Actually, I usually just end up keeping them, is a nasty habit.

I wouldn't recommend this manufacturer. They've been trying to extract additional money from me since the day I signed the contract. One problem after another. 8 weeks overdue for plans, PLANS! Then I get them and it a universal set the just cross pages off depending on the building.

The building took 4 weeks longer than promised once plans were approved. All this when I was told Id be erecting it within 6 weeks of signing contract.

Once building arrive, most of the trusses were wrong. after sending back and waiting on new, new ones came also wrong in the same way. Finally wound up modifying onsite with my tools.

rollup door opening size was flip flopped due to salesman's miscommunication with yard, expected me to foot bill for $500 change order.

So much BS.

Finally We settled with the owner of co offering to "make it right" and agreed to pay my extra costs involved with his screwups.

weeks later I get a bill for the same amount he discounted me with a "intent to lein" notice. got ahold of a lawyer who sent out a nasty letter, that was the end of that.

Ironically, I was just served this evening (a year later). Apparently they are taking me to small claims court... I thought they dropped it but I guess not.

Those people are the most dishonest company I have ever dealt with.

WOW, that's too bad, I'm looking to build this spring and that looks like a really cool design that I've never seen before. Definitely not worth having to deal with that **** though. Looks like you did a nice job of making it work in the end though, I'd definitely be fighting them to the end on that bill, thanks again for sharing:rocker:

Looks like its been awhile since I updated this thread. A lot has changed!

I have used the building for 3 years now. In that time, Ive probably re arranged it a dozen times, trying out bench configurations, pallet racking, tools. I am now in the middle of yet another restructuring! Pics to follow soon.
