Thanks, i actually used Behr high gloss paint..then sanded before the epoxy. i just used the rustoleum kit from Home depot..all 2 part, even the clear. Rustoleum said that the concrete epoxy bonds to latex paint well as long as its preped correctly..we love it

Note to self: don't piss off ARbuilder223.

Nice work! The countertops look excellent. Keep us informed on how they wear as time goes on.

ARbuilder223, very nice build you have going on there! Having never done an epoxy finish on a wood counter top, I'm wondering how the heck you applied the chips to the vertical surfaces? It appears that you got a very uniform distribution on both top and sides; what's the trick?

:thumbup:Very slick.

From what ive been told...it is not recommended to use epoxy on bare wood Due to the wood "breathing" leading to cracking / peeling. i actually painted 2 coats of grey exterior then sanded good with 80g..then epoxy. As far as the flakes...was a little different than floors. But stuck VERY well. just tossed then wife sprinkled the top to try to get a full profile as the floors are. dried for a day..brushed loose flakes off..then clear coat. Believe it or not..not too many flakes came off either. we are both pleased with the outcome of the countertop..just hope it stands time/wear.

Which kit did you use from Home Depot...they have lots of Rustoleum kits? Also, what did the gray paint do for the color?

I was thinking of using Rustoleum Laminate paint on mine...I'm not sure it would be as thick as the epoxy though.

Also, do you think you could use it on 1/2 OSB?

the plywood i used was cabinet grade..if you gonna throw flakes osb shouldnt be an issue. the reason i painted first was to "seal" the wood as best as i could. Also was told by Rustoleum that the epoxy has great bonding to water base paint after it sanded correctly. (less chance of peeling / cracking) The kit i actually used was the Epoxy Sheild Garage floor, then used the Gloss clear. was under 200 total..i only used 1/3 of the kits..save the rest for my bar top, etc.

After seeing what you can do with a counter top, I think you should build it! I'm sure you can find some free plans online, or build it out of 2x4s and wrap them in nice plywood....or something!

Really looking nice AR! As others said, I will be interested to see how durable the epoxy finish on the bench tops works out - it sure looks great in your pictures. Nice work on the trim edge for the top as well! I will continue to watch as you progress . . .

As much as I like the finish you achieved on the workbench, I'd opt for a bar with some 'BLING'. I don't know how much floor space you've allotted for the bar area, so I'll just throw an idea out there. I've always liked the look of the cool, modern (1950's) motif for a bar. Wall cabinets/glass shelves with glass block and neon accents, chrome trim, retro bar stools. Kind of like a hangout the 'Rat Pack' would call home. lol

ha..thats what i was leaning to! After putting the 2nd coat of clear on i think the durability will do well. That 2part clear is some MEAN stuff..seriously! I wont be doing heavy work on it ( like tearing down a big block)..just minor tinkering/gunsmith work..
