Mystery Coventry Tool

At my British Car Club meeting last night, we were shown a mystery tool. No one could identify it. Any guesses here?

Suspect it's used to turn a polished shaft of a specific diameter. Appears that there is a piece of brass shim stock that allows the jaws to clamp with enough force to be able to turn it, but limit the amount of closure.

This is a mystery tool. There are no numbers but and sure what it is or what it does. These are extra tools that the Coventry Foundation have and are liquidating. These are from the same group of tools that the Jaguar Club of North America uses to run the tool loan program. If you don't want to borrow the tools, here is your change to own them. These are genuine factory tools, not cheap reproductions. It is the buyers responsibility to make sure the tool is used properly. This tool might be designed to be used with other tools and might not do the job by itself. The factory shop manual will list part numbers of tools required for the job. The tool catalogs are also available for download from the JCNA site under tool loan. These tools are not returnable if used. Please ask any questions if you are unsure.

Difficult to even guess with no perspective on size. Assuming it’s designed to be squeezed by an average size hand, maybe it’s for rotating a shaft inside a transmission during assembly? Or maybe a CV axle? Or holding/rotating a cam shaft?

Seems Like you would want a tool like that to open from the other end though.

See them online as Crank Bearing Removal Tool or being used as bearing race removal tools. There are other ways to do those jobs, but that seems to have been one way.

KTM has a tool for removing the inner race from the crank, but it’s designed to work with heat. I don’t really see how the op tool could be used on an automotive type crank bearing.

Me either, but that was my guess.

I was thinking bearing - maybe some type of collar bearing tool? That fits the shaft assumption.
