Found cleaning out a cabinet. Doesn’t go to any of my machines. What is it/what would it fit?

When you need it, you'll know....

If I told you how many CNC lathes I used to be responsible for it would probably blow your mind.

We'd blow up chuck and collet setups through operator error (button pushers) or poor equipment selection (unqualified "engineers" & bean counters) too frequently but I can't ever recall emergency collets...

Edit: we always called the "soft" collets or jaws

So, um, I hate to ask, but... is there a hole on the other end, and if so, how big is it?

My vote is for an orphaned "soft collet" as well.

An emergency collet is usually a softer material, this one is aluminum. But can be had in brass or steel. Usually not drilled and will have three pins and holes to hold it not totally compressed while you cut whatever size/shape hole in it. Used to fixture custom parts. This particular one has maybe a 5/16 hole and dowl pin. Would probably be used to hold something larger than the normal range of whatever kind of collet it is. This one is new, never machined, still has the dowl for machining it.

I suppose you can call it a soft collet, but probably wouldn’t get too far trying to find one.

Anyway, any idea on the size? Or what kind of machine it might fit?

Probably correct on both counts! And that’s about all I know also.
Just seeing if anyone knows what it fits or if Wants it before I bin it.

What the hell is an emergency collet?

-They were referred to as "emergency" collets- even Hardinge often called them as such- as you would keep a couple unmachined, on hand, for "emergencies". Like a rush job where you needed a special size you didn't already have, and you didn't want to wait to special-order one.

Yes, more accurately called "soft" collets, but considering how commonly they've been called "emergency", I'm surprised you never heard that.

Doc.

Turns out I’m missing an adapter! Only seen single piece ones. I suppose it kinda makes sense to not use the fine draw tube threads in aluminum. IMG_2056.jpeg

I do have a couple other ones that I have never used. I’ll see if they also use this system. When my partner was setting up this shop prior to me getting on board it was like a used equipment dealership. Lots of machines coming and going. I have literally a ton of big lathe chucks that I have no use for or idea what they might fit.

but that might and perhaps should be a complete different thread.
