Please excuse my ignorance, but I can't for the life of me figure out what these things are or what they're for. Can anyone help me out?

I would guess the numbers may indicate that it is an adapter for some tool of some sort.

They look like broken bolt/stud extractors with replaceable tips. Are they left hand thread?

Those are adapters for a universal string trimmer head. I have a bag of these in my garage. They are used to adapt a universal head to a wide variety of different trimmers. Some will have left hand threads.

Exactly! I bought an opened (and resealed) trimmer head package at Lowes that was on clearance. I got it home and there was ONE adapter left in the package. Of course - not one that would work with my trimmer model.

I looked at those photos for 15 minutes saying to myself "I know I have seen these somewhere before". I just couldn't place it.
