The jaws look slightly curved. One is concave and one is convex. Glass pliers should be flat and parallel.
There are different types.

The ones pictured are running pliers. The score line is centered (parallel) in the jaws and the curve applies pressure to each half resulting in a break. The lower half of the jaw can also used to tap the glass from underneath to assist a cut.

Breaking pliers have flat jaws. They are for grabbing perpendicular to a score to break.

I just got a pair of these at the nearest ReStore, never used, still have plastic over the jaws. Doing a search on GJ for "pliers " in "titles only" did the trick, this thread was just a few down. GJ comes through again.
Looking at some on eBay, it looks like the plastic covered jaws might be the way they are used--I know little about stained glass work.
