Found this set in a small black box made by Helman Mfg in Urbana Ohio.
The set has on one end a hex hole. Inside of each size (they are hollowed out and you unscrew the end) is 4 to 5 pieces that have a hex end and a thread end.

What were/are they used for? To clean the thread? Has me stumped.

Those are transfer screws. They are used to transfer threaded hole locations to another surface. The little pointed screws are screwed into the threaded holes using the hex case as a socket to screw them in, and the two pieces are brought in contact and tapped, transferring the hole locations.
